The HfP chat thread – Saturday 28th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here:  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone know whether IHG still take the direct debit if you have paid off the amount owed between the statement being generated and the DD being due ? Barclaycard are quite clear on this when you make interim payments but creation are not. thanks

  • dezbez says:

Apologies if posted before, 1/3 off all fizz in Morrison’s, even better if you can combine with the 10% Amex offer. Bolly at £30 (Bolly Rose £33).

    • Anna says:

There are a few decent wines in the 3 for £18 selections as well – Villa Maria Sauvignon, Trivento Reserve Malbec etc.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      That is hillarious, utter idiots

    • AJA says:

Oh dear. That said I’m with BA on this one, sorry any Welsh HfPers. 🙂

BA could have redeemed themselves if the Cardiff maintenance site could
      have tweeted support for Wales.

      • Andrew says:

Oh yes they should have done that – it would have been a good compromise. I mean they sponsor England Rugby and they’ve been tweeting/Instagraming support throughout but they should have had more sense when it was against another British nation.

      • Lady London says:

        What a good idea @AJA

  • Holam says:

I have a large car finance bill to pay with black horse. Have Curve metal. Thinking to put this through IHG and Beardy. Anyone done this successfully?

    • Holam says:

scratch that, they’re rejecting the curve card based on card type. Claim to only accept ‘debit cards’ – 5375 must not pass their checks

  • Oli says:

Just got a reminder that the Morrisons Amex offer is expiring soon. I think I read on here that some GCs are limited per transaction and its best to get the Morrisons GCs which can then be used to buy other GCs later – is there a limit on the number of Morrisons GCs that can be bought in one transaction? Thanks

    • memesweeper says:

I’ve done 5 @ 250 in one transaction. I heard of people doing twice that in one go.

    • TGLoyalty says:

There’s no limit on the number of cards per transaction for GCs that say £x-£xxx

The only limit is how many you want to buy and are comfortable putting through.

Remember you need items with some weight to add to the scale with the GC and if the amount isn’t shown just press “other amount” then type in the card max.

The advantage of getting M’s cards is that you can convert to others at your leisure and of course for any M’s shopping. And you get More points twice.

      • Oli says:

        Thanks all

      • Lady London says:

do we need to worry that any future useability rules might change on this? people are reporting putting in some serious amounts

        • TGLoyalty says:

Good job M’s sells food and booze.

          Something nearly everyone needs.

Never risk more than you can afford to spend.

        • TGLoyalty says:

I meant to say that of course M’s may limit the £ you can get back for example so make hay while you can.

          • Josh says:

M’s could instantly change the rules so that M Giftcards can’t be used to purchase other giftcards.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Of course therefore back to my the sell food and drink comment.

      • Jonathan says:

I did 8 x £250 Morrisons on Thursday at a manned till with no raised eyebrows. Cashed out £500 immediately for JL vouchers at the self checkout & was getting some very funny looks doing the chocolate bar trick as you need to add a bar for every gift card (and not swipe the bar). Will probably try getting a few JLP vouchers with some shopping at a manned till next week.

Also filled up with £50 diesel with no issues.

  • meta says:

Did BA extend expiry of On Business points? I thought they did by 6 months and the message on the account also states that any points expiring this year will be extended. My account is still showing some points expiring end of the year.

    • rk says:

That is my understanding as well, and email from BA backs that up, maybe will happen end of year.

  • Stephen says:

Hi All – Took advantage of 20% off with BA late last night to book a return to Kathmandu next Oct via Doha. All the stuff I saw said had to be BA flights but DOH-KTM obv is Qatar Airways. From playing around with the permutations it looked like as long as LON-DOH-LON was BA then I could get the discount. Just wondering if others found the same thing?

  • Alex D says:

Sorry to re-hash something which I know is discussed a lot but I just want to get others suggestions on best use of card to card. I currently have Bendy(legacy),Seagulls(x2),Beardy,IHG and Rev. Wondering what people would suggest as best way to max out. I know I can use beardy to pay ihg. Should I upgrade to metal bendy?

    • Alan says:

I have a large CGT bill to pay by the end of Jan.
Could I use a Virgin card/Curve to pay this and generate Virgin points.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Depends if your virgin credit limit is significantly lower than your CGT bill then probably not as you can only earn points up to your credit limit per statement period.

        • FFoxSake says:

re: “as you can only earn points up to your credit limit per statement period” – is that true at Creation too?

        • TGLoyalty says:

As far as I can tell only virgin does it.

    • Ryan says:

How about we all stop giving away the trade secrets like there’s no tomorrow and let people who really want to figure it out… figure it out??

The rate that people are going about these things, it’ll be closed up in 2 weeks

      • TGLoyalty says:

Curve literally advertises the fact it can be used to pay institutions likes the seagulls for 1.5% fee.

Curve will be shut down sooner or later when they run out of seed money.

        • Ryan says:

I was talking about MS in general…

The old ‘trade secrets’ are very much common knowledge from the last couple weeks
