Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

You can now link your Nectar and Avios accounts – this is what you need to do

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The Sainsbury’s and British Airways partnership is now up and running.

You can read our coverage of the Nectar and Avios partnership launch here. Our guide to earning Nectar points is here and our guide to spending Nectar points is here.

How can I transfer points between Avios and Nectar?

The website to link your Nectar and British Airways Executive Club accounts is now live.

On ba.com you should go to this page.

The screenshots below are from the Nectar site.

How do you earn your 500 bonus Avios and double Nectar points?

This is how the offer works.

You will receive 500 bonus Avios when you transfer 1,600 Nectar points into 1,000 Avios between 25th January and 14th February.

Once you have done this, you also qualify to receive double Nectar base points on all of your Sainsbury’s shopping up to 19th April.

For absolute clarity, you will NOT receive double Nectar base points on your shopping until you have made a transfer from Nectar into Avios.

Note that:

  • the 1,600 Nectar points must be transferred into your Avios account in one go
  • transfers of less than 1,600 Nectar points into Avios will NOT qualify you to earn double points on your Sainsbury’s shopping
  • you do not receive the bonus if you transfer 1,000 Avios into 1,600 Nectar points and then reverse the transaction
  • the 500 bonus Avios may take 28 days to arrive

Linking your accounts is very easy

Click on this page of the British Airways site.

Once you have provided logged in to both accounts, you’re done. It is very easy.

You will see both your balances together.

Once linked, you can make a transfer.

The minimum transfer out of Avios is 250 Avios, which converts to 400 Nectar points. Transfers must be in chunks of 250 Avios.

The minimum transfer out of Nectar is 400 Nectar points, which converts to 250 Avios. Transfers must be in chunks of 400 Nectar points.

Transfers are instantaneous, which is good news.

Do both accounts need to be in my name?

No.

You can link accounts in different surnames together.

I tried linking my Avios account to a Nectar account in a different name to mine and it worked fine.

This would represent a way of transferring Avios for free between two people by linking and unlinking different Nectar accounts – but be careful.

However, you cannot link and unlink an Avios or Nectar account more than four times in a calendar year. Once you have done this, you cannot link the Nectar card back to ANY Avios account, even one to which it has been previously linked. There is a risk that you end up with a Nectar account which cannot be linked to an Avios account again until 1st January 2022.

Auto-conversion is also possible

You can arrange a weekly conversion of your Avios to Nectar points or Nectar points to Avios.

Once activated, a transfer will take place weekly as long as your Avios balance is above 250 or your Nectar balance is above 400. You can choose which direction to auto-convert.

The ‘cap’ figures shown above – 40,000 Nectar points or 25,000 Avios – are the maximum that can be auto-converted per quarter.

There is a cap on what you can transfer

At no point during the launch of this partnership were we told that there was a cap on the number of points you can transfer. It wasn’t in any of the press information and it wasn’t discussed with me verbally.

There is a cap, however. That said, it is not a huge one.

You are restricted to converting a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points or 50,000 Avios per month via manual conversions.

This is not, I admit, a huge restriction although it will disappoint those who immediately planned to turn 1 million unspendable Avios into eBay, Argos or Sainsbury’s credit.

It appears that the 50,000 Avios per month cap on manual conversions is separate to the 25,000 Avios per QUARTER cap on auto-conversion transfers. This means that the average monthly cap out of Avios is actually 58,333 Avios.

As we are close to the end of the month, anyone looking to move as many Avios as possible should ensure that they use up their January allowance ASAP. You will then be able to move a further 50,000 Avios on 1st February.

If you are part of a British Airways Household Account, you can only transfer your own personal Avios. Other members of your Household Account will need to set up their own Nectar accounts.

Go to ba.com here and link your accounts. You can make your first transfer immediately and the points will go across instantly.

  • Geoff says:

It would be good to get feedback (Rob?) as soon as people start seeing the 500 bonus avios, just to see how long they take to arrive in practice.

  • JimBob75 says:

I was also hoping to transfer rather more than 50,000 Avios into Nectar, but if it takes a while then never mind! I will take advantage of the bonus Avios offer (and additional gift of double NPs for three months) – so will move Nectar into Avios before I reverse the flow. Just to be 100% sure I am reading the T&Cs correctly – if I transfer into Avios today then I am free to ‘reverse’ from 15 February?

    • AJA says:

I think you’re safer waiting until the bonus Avios have posted. I think I read that it will post in around 28 days of initialt transfer of Nectar to Avios. Or it might be within 28 days of the end of the promotional period.

  • Alex says:

Is anybody here having trouble converting their amex points to avios? Been trying this morning and the link appears to be down.

    • AJA says:

I just managed it via the nectar app. I got an “oops there’s been an error” message that flashed on screen but then a confirmation that it was successful and I can see the redemption on nectar and the Avios posted in my BAEC account.

      • Peter K says:

That’s not Amex MR reward points though. That’s nectar.

For the OP: The past couple of days there seems to have been an Amex issue with MR points from reports on here.

  • Paz says:

Apologies if this has already been mentioned previously, but you won’t receive the bonus if you convert any Avios from any BAEC account to the Nectar account during the promo period.

    T&C clause 6:
‘Participants will not be eligible for the 500 Bonus Avios in the following scenarios: the BAEC account has previously received a bonus in the Bonus Avios Qualifying Period; the Nectar account has previously received a transfer from any BAEC account in the Bonus Avios Qualifying Period; the Nectar account has previously transferred an amount that was eligible for a bonus to any BAEC account; or the Nectar account has been merged with another Nectar account that had previously received a transfer’

Confirmed by Nectar via twitter support this morning.

So I think you can only qualify if you have or will accrue 1600 Nectar points during the promo period

    • MilesOnPoint says:

Yeah, this is why I think I will transfer 1k Amex MR points to Nectar (will bring my account to 1,600 as I have 600 currently) to then be able to activate double base points at Sainsbury’s. Don’t think I would be able to accrue enough points to get to 1,600 NP in promo period otherwise

      • lumma says:

Are you sure? I got 740 nectar points from 1 shop on Friday using some of the bonus point offers in the app. If I buy everything else I’ll get another 400 or so points with new offers due in on Friday

  • Jan says:

Hope someone could please confirm this for me ….
Both myself and husband have Avios accounts (joined in a Household Account) and we also have Nectar account ( but with 2 different card numbers). Is it possible to transfer Nectar points to both our BA accounts and get the opening offer of 500 extra points on each account ?
    Thanks for any help

    • Craig says:

The transfer worked from both accounts, we won’t know for a while if the bonus happens twice.

    • Jan says:

Oh i think the post now showing above has answered my question ! And it is unfortunately a NO .
      Thanks

  • P4D says:

Any confirmation that you the bonus has been succesful? (other than going to sainsburies and checking if points are double?)

    • The real John says:

No, and the double points don’t credit immediately either. I went to Sainsburys.

T&Cs say double points will credit within 28 days of some date.

  • Alan says:

I opened a nectar account and transferred over 1000 Avios yesterday.

Do I get the bonus if I send the 1600 Avios back today?

    • Rui N. says:

Interested to know as well. 🙂 My own Nectar own only has a handful of points (we use my wife’s regularly), but would like the bonus avios if I can jus transfer back and forth!

    • Sandgrounder says:

I’ve topped mine up yesterday and sent the 1600 today. The TS and Cs would suggest this is ok, but there is a ‘we can vary these after the event’ clause so perhaps not, as it isn’t really in the spirit of the offer. Not holding my breath.

    • BS says:

Nope. You’ve just invalidated yourself from a bonus by going avios —> nectar during the promo period.

  • Freddy says:

Is it against the rules for other posters to post referral codes. Just seen mine and and another user’s deleted.

    • Blenz101 says:

The site doesn’t operate as a traditional forum with “rules”.

HfP has always been pretty open about the commercial realities and the need to monetise the site.

I would say it’s pretty clear from the deletion and Rhys posting his own link that you shouldn’t bother posting links which benefit you without perhaps first checking in future.

    • BLG says:

I think you can only post referral codes if they have no value to HfP now. Which is fair enough.

    • Rhys says:

The rule, as has been previously mentioned, is that only one person can post a referral code when someone asks for a referral. Unsolicited codes (or more than one code) are removed because it spams up the comments.

      • Alex D says:

Rhys just tends to be first as one of his jobs is to literally troll through comments to reply, moderate etc. Plenty of posts where the code is posted by someone else who was before him or rob and it’s left be. I think fair enough really!
