IHG Rewards Club becomes IHG Rewards in rebranding

IHG and IHG Rewards Club have revealed a new ‘visual identity’, as they are called these days.

Say goodbye to the orange:

and say hello to a more serious-looking black:

The word ‘Club’ has also disappeared.

This has been done to “make [IHG] more relevant and attractive to consumers – particularly a younger demographic of consumers”.

Here is a squarer version:

In particular, the word ‘Club’ was removed to “reflect the warm welcome that is available to all”.

Here is the new parent company logo:

At the moment Spain won’t let you in from Gibraltar unless you have a valid reason. (negative PCR test aside) there is a strict regional lockdown.
UK to Gibraltar does not have a quarantine requirement but does have a negative PCR Test which you can do on arrival if you have not done so in the previous three days.
Although come the end of may things may be different.

    • Travel Strong says:

UK to Gibraltar is also very restricted in terms of entry requirements. No entry to tourists. (as of Dec 22nd, with no end date specified.)

      • Alex Sm says:

Do you know why that is? I was wondering why England has exemptions from quarantine and other covid entry requirements for the rest of the UK, Channel Islands, St Helena, Ascension, Falkland Islands but not Gibraltar! Have a booking for a special occasion there for June and started to worry already

        • Travel Strong says:

GIB entry is at the mercy of the Gibraltar governments decisions, I am hopeful this will improve by June. However – UK entry from GIB (or anywhere else) will be subject to whatever politics are flavour of the month, so outlook is not great on that front.

I am in the same boat as you and have already made Plan B reservations for November, in case June cannot go ahead.

          • David says:

And the Gibraltar government also needs to be mindful of the attitudes of Spain.
The land border needs to remain open for free movement of workers (including some essential workers). And for Gibraltar residents, a closed border is also more of a hassle than increased hoops to jump through for the UK.

Steps have already been taken to prevent Gibraltar being used as a ‘soft route’ for entry to Spain. (I.e. checking for Gibraltar ID cards/residence permits, or Spanish residence permits – rather than just passports).

        • John says:

Because Gibraltar is next to the hotspot of Spain and the others are isolated islands which got infected from England in the first place

        • Colin MacKinnon says:

It’s all down to the Common Travel Area – which doesn’t apply to British Overseas Territories:

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Travel_Area#British_citizens_in_Ireland

Yet another thing that complicates the Irish border between north and south. The obvious 10-day in a hotel loophole.

Now there’s an idea: Irish government should offer a better class of hotel for your 10 days at a cheaper price than the UK!

          • David says:

CTA is a complete red-herring/irrelevant if you are talking about Covid related restrictions, which are on a public health basis.

It is true that Gibraltar is not part of the CTA (and never has been), however that is also not that relevant to non-covid times either on this point as CTA is about removal of controls, not about entitlement to move. You can still have someone who is in immigration terms entitled to be in one part of the CTA, but not entitled to be in another part of it.

But as said, Gibraltar is not part of CTA (never has been), and additionally Gibraltar is distinct from UK, with own immigration and visa policy, and even without either of those, the covid restrictions are on a public health basis which trumps everything.

          • Alex Sm says:

They don’t seem to have those. The worst Crowne Plaza I ever stayed at (and a very expensive one!) was near Dublin airport

  • Alan says:

Not a particular fan of the new logo, seems much less distinctive and pretty boring to me. I wonder if dropping ‘Club’ will mean some properties finally drop the reference to ‘Priority Club Rewards’ that many of them still seem to have though 😂

I would have found a genuine update to the programme with inclusion of breakfast benefits much more exciting!

  • Tracy Regan says:

As some are talking about IHG Customer Service perhaps you can help. I’ve been trying to sort out last year’s free night since last July. I get passed from Creation to IHG and back again! I think the issue is that they think I’ve got the free credit card card and I’ve actually got the premium one. Does anyone know someone at IHG or Creation that can sort this out once and for all? Thank you.

  • Andrew says:

And has anyone had their IHG 2020 rollover nights post yet?

  • Harry Holden says:

A turd, by any other name, is still a turd. As stated above, the only thing IHG Rewards are good for is points towards a free night in the worse room in the hotel.

Other brands make status mean something. IHG status gives a free kit kat.

If they really want to be aspirational, start guaranteeing some of the benefits like Ambassador do.

    • Andrew says:

Although even AMB doesn’t guarantee benefits anymore – they can pay you off with 10,000 points.

    • Brighton Belle says:

You’ve been fobbed off. The mini bottle of cheapo wine with the Kit Kat is as aspirational as Kwik Save supermarket trolley.

A new logo changes everything. Why spend more? Job done.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I disagree. Always been treated well in CP, Indigo and IC properties as spire.

    • Sam says:

Best comment I have ever read. Can’t agree more, you’re right free Kit Kat is how I’d describe IHG status benefits.

  • Dominic says:

The new brand (if you know nothing about any of the loyalty schemes) does look more upmarket/exclusive imo.

It’s a good move in that sense given their purpose behind the change ““make [IHG] more relevant and attractive to consumers – particularly a younger demographic of consumers”.”

They did, however, perhaps miss out the “affluent” or “professional” part to that sentence… that’s what the new logo appears to be trying to do, to me.

  • AJA says:

Re IHG, black is boring but it is cheaper to print on paper. I do quite like the slimmed down font though. Perhaps the marketing team went on a diet in January and thought the logo should too?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

I’ll bet it’s a bucketload of branding agency fees they wish they’d not smashed off their ebitda last year…

  • Brian W says:

Has anybody had their 2020 IHG nights rollover yet as they promised? My 2021 dashboard still saying zero nights despite staying 63 nights last year.

    • Craig says:

Not me, it was late Feb last year for me I think?

      • BrianW says:

Thanks Craig, I can’t remember last year tbh but good to know its probably just their crappy IT then.
