We wanted to to remind you today that Sainsbury’s Energy is currently offering a strong Nectar points bonus if you move both your gas and electricity supply over to their 2 year Fix & Reward tariff. The offer is only available until 18th March.

You will collect 10,000 bonus Nectar points1 if you switch both electricity and gas, or 5,000 bonus Nectar points1 for just a single fuel.

Sainsbury's Energy

This is the biggest bonus that Sainsbury’s Energy has offered for some time, which is excellent timing given the new British Airways partnership.

The sign-up bonus of 10,000 Nectar points would convert to 6,250 Avios.

If you are a regular Sainsbury’s shopper, you will get even more Nectar points on your groceries. This is potentially worth another 7,000 points per year on top2!

Collecting Nectar points with Sainsbury’s Energy

If you move both your gas and electricity over to Sainsbury’s Energy at the moment, you’ll get 10,000 bonus Nectar points for joining on their 2-Year Fix & Reward tariff1. This means £50-worth of Nectar points just for switching, or 6,250 Avios.

Whilst the bonus is attractive on its own, there is an interesting extra benefit too for Sainsbury’s shoppers.

As a Sainsbury’s shopper, you’ll get triple Nectar points on your shopping for the duration of your tariff2.  Nectar members usually receive 1 point per £1 spent in-store at Sainsbury’s, but as a Sainsbury’s Energy customer, you’ll get an additional two points per £1 on top.

(Triple points is for dual fuel customers.  If you move only your electricity or gas across, you receive double Nectar points at Sainsbury’s.)

How do the bonus in-store points work?

There is a limit on the bonus Nectar points you can receive in-store from Sainsbury’s Energy.  You can collect a maximum of 3,500 points on Sainsbury’s shopping per fuel each year2.

Dual fuel customers are therefore capped at 7,000 bonus points per year – that’s £35 worth of Nectar points or 4,375 Avios.

You would need to spend £3,500 per year in Sainsbury’s to hit the cap, so it won’t be a problem for most.

Which tariffs qualify for bonus Nectar points?

The 10,000 bonus points1 are only available when you sign up to the Sainsbury’s Energy 2-Year Fix & Reward tariff for both gas and electricity.

You’ll collect a 5,000 point bonus1 for switching a single fuel to the 2-Year Fix & Reward tariff.

All Sainsbury’s Energy tariffs come with 100% renewable electricity3. Sainsbury’s Energy is rated ‘Great’ on Trustpilot4 and is a Which? top ten provider with UK based call centres.

  • Sue Loder says:

I was switching anyway due to demise of previous supplier. My supply start date is 9th March so I will be watching with interest over next 30 days (not much else to do).

  • JDB says:

It seems the offer is not open to a wider range of existing customers than Sainsbury’s Energy. I entered my supplier – E.on – on the quote page and got the message:- “The Sainsbury’s Energy Fix and Reward tariffs are only available to new customers directly via our website or call centre ONLY. This unfortunately excludes existing E.ON, E.ON Next, npower, npower Select, Powershop and Sainsbury’s Energy customers.”

  • RichS says:

Be ready to spend time chasing the points. I switched before this offer, when it was 8000 nectar points (4000 per fuel) and triple nectar points on shopping (if you have duel fuel).
I was given 4000 points and am receiving double points (should have been 8000 and triple). Sainsburys Energy couldn’t care less, and just say to wait, and if they don’t turn up “call nectar not us”. Not an impressive switch.

  • IO says:

I think anyone moving on this tariff is chasing points and this will not be a good return. Google tariffs such as Octopus Energy or some of the new start ups. Far more flexible pricing, lower tariffs and people who answer the phone!

    • AJA says:

I disagree. It’s not so clear cut if you only go for 1 year fix rather than 2. I don’t want to fix for 2 years as intend to move in the next year. I checked Octopus, Bulb, Shell Energy and Eon against both my current supplier British Gas and against Sainsbury’s and surprisingly Octopus was more expensive. Sainsbury’s is slightly more expensive than the cheapest Bulb (Standing charges, unit prices identical) but factor in the 4,000 NP for 1year fixed duel fuel and the extra NP from shopping and Sainsbury’s wins. Still waiting for confirmation of when I change over as BG was trying to convince me to stay.

      • lumma says:

Quite easy to get £50 statement credit on new bulb accounts, either from a friend or codes are easily available online. Even in the comments on here if you ask

        • Rob says:

My Mum’s Bulb referral card is in our Bulb article if you search 🙂

Problem is she only uses £30 of power per month in her little bungalow and now has a big credit balance …

          • Brighton Belle says:

Sounds like she’s knitting you a sweater as a thank you.🙇‍♀️

          • Axel says:

Sort her out with a Bitcoin mining rig then to take advantage of the ‘free’ electricity!

        • peter says:

And Octopus and Bulb let you pay with Amex..

      • Andrew says:

Energy companies have to let you out of a fixed term contract if you’re moving house

        • Toby says:

Are you sure Andrew? I was googling that this weekend and couldn’t find a reliable source.

          • Toby says:

Quick follow up on this – I checked the Sainsburys Ts&Cs and they say if you move house they’ll charge early termination fees of £30 per fuel. Unless you bring them with you. Which seems….a shame!

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Best deal ever last November: after getting the gas meter removed, switched to E.on for our pied-a-terre in Edinburgh.

At the airport in January, bored and checking emails. E.on competition for a £3k holiday and I only had to submit my email.

Last week, a phone call to say I had won! (and because of lockdown, we are lucky if we have spent a tenner on lecky from E.on since November!)

Your mileage, of course, will vary substantially!

  • ADS says:

Just tried to get a quote on the Sainsburys Energy website but:

The Sainsbury’s Energy Fix and Reward tariffs are only available to new customers directly via our website or call centre ONLY. This unfortunately excludes existing E.ON, E.ON Next, npower, npower Select, Powershop and Sainsbury’s Energy customers.

  • DJ says:

Can you pay Sainsbury’s with Amex cards?

    • Alex says:

Not for Sainsbury’s Energy. In their supermarkets yes.

      • Tim says:

A shame. With Bulb I always top up a few £100 with Amex every quarter and keep the d/d as low as possible. Helps towards Companion voucher spend.

  • Froggitt says:

Personally I think it’s rude leaving your Bulb codes on this site.

I’ve done a comparison of this tarrif against the market. For me it’s £1,439 a year v. £1,206/yr for the top performer. You’ve got to be really desperate for Nectar points to go with this deal (or you think the rates in year two are going to have risen a lot).
