Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

You can now claim your 25,000 IHG Rewards points for having Spire Elite status

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you had your IHG Rewards Spire Elite status rolled over last year, even though you didn’t earn enough points to requalify, there is some good news.

Your 25,000 bonus IHG Rewards points for requalifying as Spire Elite are now available to claim.

Alternatively, you can gift Platinum Elite status to a friend.

Given that the points are worth at least £100 I doubt many of you will want to do any gifting, but you can review the Platinum Elite benefits on this page of ihg.com.

Many of us thought that the points would not arrive

When IHG rolled over elite status last year, it specifically said that members who were Spire Elite WOULD receive their requalification gift.

The gift usually appears immediately when you requalify but in this case it did not. No-one was sure what was happening, but as IHG Rewards had voluntarily extended status you couldn’t really complain.

All has turned out well, however, and the 25,000 points are now available.

How do you claim your 25,000 IHG Rewards bonus points for being Spire Elite?

Go to ihg.com here and log in to your account.

On your account home page, scroll down and you will see this:

You can then choose between gifting Platinum Elite status or taking the points.

It is good to see IHG Rewards coming through here, when they could easily have said that people who were gifted requalification would not receive anything.

    Nothing for Platinums?

    • Andrew says:

This isn’t one of the standard benefits of Platinum – only for Spire.

  • Scott says:

I last took the 25k back in October, so nothing new for me. Just the Hertz thing.
Sitting on 48 nights at present, but unable to stay anywhere work or leisure related anyway.

  • Will says:

i got my free night credited for the premium credit card spend target this week. The details and terms only talk about Kimpton Inner Circle – this seems to be an error. What are the real terms and conditions please if anyone has them to hand?

    • AK says:

Still better than my situation, I am waiting for my free night 2.5 months after hitting the anniversary…

      • Paul Jones says:

I raise your 2.5 month and give you 13 months. 40+ emails to CS and still no voucher

  • J says:

Does anyone have recommendations for UK hotels to get the best out of a free night voucher for 2 adults and 2 young children all sharing a room? I.e. 2 double beds for a standard room.

    • Rob says:

Only easy way to do it is to search and see what comes up. Do, say, ‘London’ for 4 with a 100km search radius and for reward nights.

It can vary from night to night as some hotels may stick bigger rooms up for redemption on quiet nights. Obviously there are virtually no hotels where, by default, every room contains two double beds.

    • Anna says:

As I recall the Crowne Plaza in Stratford Upon Avon had award nights for a room with a double bed and 2 sofa beds. It looks to be in a very pleasant setting as well. I think you need to search for 2 people with this one, though, searching for 4 didn’t bring this option up for some reason.

      • Harrier25 says:

It’s a fantastic setting on the River Avon. A lovely fully refurbished hotel with a nice club lounge.

    • JonD says:

Some IHG hotels consistently never have any 2 double bed rooms available but few seem to always have 2 double bed rooms available. Best bet is to do a lot of searching.

      A few posibilities:

Kimpton Clocktower – shows available on search but not when you click through so I had to phone IHG to make booking manually.

HI Lancaster – good pool and decent room.

      CP Glasgow
      Indigo Glasgow

None of these is giving you outstanding value but better than nothing.

    • J says:

Brilliant. Thanks for the replies. The tips will make the search a lot easier 🙂

  • Tiff says:

It’s nothing new that IHG is a rewards-based, not a benefits-based, programme (the clue’s in the name). It’s been like that for years and they’ve given no sign that it’s going to change. If you want benefits and recognition instead of free nights, you’re in the wrong programme.

  • luckyjim says:

So, effectively, the renewal threshold was set to zero points. I’d already hit the usual target and bagged my 25k bonus. No hardship.

  • Liz says:

Does anyone have any experience of cancelled bookings with the free IHG cert earned last year. I used my one from March 2020 to book for Canada in Aug/Sept 2021 but will likely have to cancel this. Will I lose the certificate?
Just received this years free Cert and it is only valid for 12 months so no extension being given and it looks like it’s only valid in Kimpton Hotels?

    • Optimus Prime says:

I cancelled my stay for Japan in May 2021 and the voucher is back in my account with a expiry date of 31-Dec-2021 (this voucher had been originally issued in March 2020).

      • Optimus Prime says:

Also as you said T&C’s mention only Kimpton Hotels but the mobile app is letting me use it on Indigo, IC, etc.

        • Liz says:

Brilliant Optimus – thankyou End of the year would be great. Going to wait till June before I decide what to do with the booking – or it might be decided for me by Nicola!

    • Anna says:

Is that the credit card free night? Why does it say only valid at Kimptons?

      • Liz says:

        Yes – that’s what the T&C’s say.

        • Anna says:

I assume that’s a mistake then – it’s in their interests for the free nights to be used at less expensive hotels!

  • Chuck says:

Thanks Rob, claimed and got email confirmation 2 mins later.
No stays for over a year but have the CC so a nice freebie
