JetBlue’s slots at London Heathrow airport are confirmed

Regular readers will know that two weeks ago we reported how US airline JetBlue was showing up on the Heathrow Airport website.

This implied that the well-regarded US low-cost carrier – albeit a low-cost carrier with an excellent flat bed business class seat – would not necessarily be using the Gatwick and Stansted slots it had been allocated.

A new filing by Airport Coordination, the independent body which manages airport slot allocations, confirms this and adds additional detail.

JetBlue A321LR Mint Studio seat 2

It is now official that JetBlue has been given slots for a total of 270 London Heathrow flights for the Summer 2021 season, which runs until the end of October. This covers:

  • 1 x daily New York flight from 2nd August
  • 1 x 4-weekly Boston flights from 13th September, increasing to daily from 20th September

This means that both of JetBlue’s initial routes will depart from Terminal 2 at Heathrow, whereas we originally thought that it only had slots for New York.

There are still more questions to ask, however.

  • JetBlue wants to run multiple daily services to New York and Boston – indeed, it needs to run multiple daily services if it is to win corporate clients – but can it really get 6-8 daily slot pairs at Heathrow given time?
  • Summer and Winter season slot allocations are separate, so even if JetBlue has these Summer slots permanently (and this isn’t certain – they could be on loan) it still needs to secure slots to continue operating between November 2021 and March 2022

It is looking quite positive, however, and in reality there will be some Heathrow slots coming onto the market from carriers which permanently retrench post-covid – albeit serving the US market requires slots at specific times of day.

As a reminder, JetBlue will be operating with Airbus A321LR single-aisle aircraft, the same type that Aer Lingus will be flying from Manchester to New York and Boston.

Here is the updated ‘Mint’ business class seat you will see. JetBlue is not part of any airline alliance so you will need to put your hand in your pocket if you want to try it.

Sad to see Departures go, I quite enjoyed it.

    • Andrew says:

And yet another Platinum feature/benefit cut for the same membership fee.

    • L Allen says:

I didn’t even know it existed and I’ve had platinum card for about 3 years now

      • John Murray says:

Me too. I’ve had a Platinum card for six years and I’ve never received a single copy! 😁

    • Boeingbumper says:

Frankly as soon as my copy arrived it went straight into the recycling.

  • Phillip says:

I was very positively surprised by a short overnight stay at Four Points Auckland. Very good customer service, and everything was in good condition. The rooms were on the small side but other than that, it could easily have been a very good Marriott/Sheraton.

    • BJ says:

I have never stayed at it myself but from what I’ve heard Four Points Sukhumvit in Bangkok is also a good hotel, punching above it’s weight and good value for both cash and points.

    • Ian M says:

Yes nice hotel and friendly staff. Offered me a free glass of sparkling wine due to my Ambassador status, which is more than any Marriott, Sheraton, St Regis, Ritz Carlton etc etc have ever done.

      • Ian M says:

My comment is referring to the Four Points Auckland (not Bangkok)

    • Boeingbumper says:

The Gatwick Four Points website offered a FANTIC link to the airport terminals. Not sure I fancy that! “One of London Gatwick newest and closest off-site hotels with onsite parking and fanatic links to the airport terminals.”

  • BJ says:

@Rhys, your article read very well and I was much impressed. Was it almost entirely as you wrote it or was it subject to a lot of editing by the newspaper? Doesn’t matter either way, it was good, I’m just curious how it works.

    • Rob says:

Based on the draft I saw, they changed the introduction and a bit of techy JetBlue info was cut, but the bulk is as it was.

It is a tricky balance – they asked Rhys to contribute because they wanted someone who understands aviation as they felt their existing team was weaker on this, but on the other hand they don’t want complex discussions about aircraft types etc because the average reader won’t understand / doesn’t care.

    • Rhys says:

Virtually the same except the first paragraph which was changed up slightly 🙂

    • BJ says:

Well done! People who have never had to write anything for their job rarely appreciate the skill and effort required. This is especially true for a general circulation media and an article like this which will have a very diverse readership. Pitching it just right to keep most of them engaged is very challenging. Same in teaching or conference presentations where the audience is diverse in respect of both interests and ability. Many might think it the same as writing an essay or practical report like they did at university but when doing it for a living in the real world as opposed to just for a teacher or examiner, it is a whole different ballgame.

Four Points Nairobi Airport is great! Almost as if they decided to brand it higher and then downgraded it to a FourPoints.

Modern rooms, rooftop bar, pool and grill restaurant. Main dining restaurant that is 24/7 and breakfast that’s starts at 5am … with hash browns that are some of the best in the world!

  • Tariq says:

The @departuresint Instagram post states that they’ll continue to print the international edition – just the US edition that’s moving online.

  • tony says:

Some interesting bits in that new routes filing document….

Cyprus Airways back at LHR giving another option to Larnaca that presumably can’t have any less legroom than a BA A321neo.

Also Wideroe to Bergen (that runs through the winter as well)

And Aegean running some holiday routes to Corfu, Crete etc. Was very impressed with their business class a couple of years back.

    • Sam G says:

Some awkward arrival times in Greece though on some days – ~3am which isn’t ideal!

      • tony says:

Ooof! Missed that. I guess it’s only 1am in the UK….

        • tony says:

Westjet moving their Calgary & Vancouver flights from Gatwick, too…

        • Sam G says:

Yeh. It’s just annoying to have to pay for a night of a hotel you will only arrive at just in time for breakfast or even worse hang around until they have a room ready for you. At least the inbound is at a reasonable time – brings back memories of waiting for the Monarch airlines 4am return to Luton when I was a kid and check out was at 11am the day before!

          • The real John says:

I just sleep early the day before the trip, then get to the hotel at 6-7am and leave my bags there (sometimes no bags to leave), have breakfast in the lounge if offered then start day 1’s activities. Afternoon nap to catch up. Better than wasting half a day on a plane. Won’t be able to do this for a while as have a toddler now.

      • kitten says:

I like night arrivals in hot places!

  • Jamesay says:

Sorry to see end of Departures magazine. I’m a therapist and used to leave it in my waiting room. I know for certain that several clients across the years opened Amex accounts, so there’s one route they won’t be getting business from.

  • Crafty says:

Always wondered why on earth I received that magazine. Assumed it was a freebie with STTM. Now I know!
