JetBlue’s slots at London Heathrow airport are confirmed

Regular readers will know that two weeks ago we reported how US airline JetBlue was showing up on the Heathrow Airport website.

This implied that the well-regarded US low-cost carrier – albeit a low-cost carrier with an excellent flat bed business class seat – would not necessarily be using the Gatwick and Stansted slots it had been allocated.

A new filing by Airport Coordination, the independent body which manages airport slot allocations, confirms this and adds additional detail.

It is now official that JetBlue has been given slots for a total of 270 London Heathrow flights for the Summer 2021 season, which runs until the end of October. This covers:

  • 1 x daily New York flight from 2nd August
  • 1 x 4-weekly Boston flights from 13th September, increasing to daily from 20th September

This means that both of JetBlue’s initial routes will depart from Terminal 2 at Heathrow, whereas we originally thought that it only had slots for New York.

There are still more questions to ask, however.

  • JetBlue wants to run multiple daily services to New York and Boston – indeed, it needs to run multiple daily services if it is to win corporate clients – but can it really get 6-8 daily slot pairs at Heathrow given time?
  • Summer and Winter season slot allocations are separate, so even if JetBlue has these Summer slots permanently (and this isn’t certain – they could be on loan) it still needs to secure slots to continue operating between November 2021 and March 2022

It is looking quite positive, however, and in reality there will be some Heathrow slots coming onto the market from carriers which permanently retrench post-covid – albeit serving the US market requires slots at specific times of day.

As a reminder, JetBlue will be operating with Airbus A321LR single-aisle aircraft, the same type that Aer Lingus will be flying from Manchester to New York and Boston.

Here is the updated ‘Mint’ business class seat you will see. JetBlue is not part of any airline alliance so you will need to put your hand in your pocket if you want to try it.

You must be set to some sort of no marketing my post preference.

didn’t think I had. have had other things from amex through the post but maybe it’s a separate setting

Bamboo is starting up HCMC soon also .
Not sure what J is like – but will
    Be new as believe it’s a 787-9

Bamboo to the UK! that’s good news.

I’ve not used it but they have a decent looking J with all-aisle access.

Their base is the wonderfully named ‘Phu Cat’ airport in southern Vietnam. Bit of a dump but I have a very soft spot for it — gateway to some great places.

Status matching to OneWorld as well.

A Four Points hotel in the US is generally on a par with a Hampton Inn or a Holiday Inn Express, but outside of the US they are often very nice. Besides those mentioned above I would also recommend the Four Points Perth (Australia), although my last stay there was almost 5 years ago.

    • RussellH says:

A few years ago we stayed at the Four Points in San Jose, CA. No way could it be compared with a Hampton or an HIE. The bar was reminiscent of a “Gentleman’s Club” in the 1930s, but as it was warm we asked if we could sit outside, even though there was a notice asking us not to. We were told that the notice was there so that they had an excuse to move anyone who became rowdy after 2100.
We also were given an upgrade to the Presidential Suite, though nothing was ever said at check-in. I only held the first level up in status.
      And it was not expensive.
Sadly, there a planning dept. notice outside that said the place was due for redevelopment.
Only other Four Points I have stayed at is Bruxelles, and that must have been over 10 years ago for a trade fair, supplied as part of the trade fair package.
Not an exciting hotel, but definitely better than many Hiltons in this country.

  • Froggitt says:

Not sure I’ve ever seen the words “low cost carrier” and Heathrow” used in the same sentence.

    • Rhys says:

JetBlue isn’t your typical low cost carrier.

      • Mikeact says:

Based on my experience with them in the US, I think they’ll do pretty well. They haven’t gone into this with their eyes closed…they’re a pretty much switched on organisation. And their offering up front is very impressive.
If the US is on your radar, then JB across the pond, and Avios or FB points internally could make it a bit of a no brainer.

    • the_real_a says:

BmiBaby – it didn’t end well.

    • APBJ says:

Aer Lingus, Eurowings… not sure ‘low cost carrier’ is a helpful description in 2021. “Premium budget” maybe.

    • lumma says:

      Vueling

  • Matarredonda says:

As and when LHR gets busy again can see the low cost airlines struggling with turn round times.

    • Nick says:

Only short haul LCCs need very short turnarounds. That’s one of the reasons longhaul low cost is harder to crack, as there aren’t major utilisation benefits to be gained. JetBlue and westjet will be fine at heathrow – if EK can turn their aircraft around in 90 mins then so can they.

  • Polly says:

Great article Rhys. Love the photos too. Makes us hopeful we will actually get that SEA trip in September now. Was meant for a special bd in March, but ever hopeful. Got F 241 in avios sale, so def worth the trip. We also love visiting the US, so hopefully this positive trend will continue. Biden really pushing the jabs roll out, so here’s hoping.

Still think masks are wise tho, on planes and in crowded areas. Even if it’s not mandatory.
Pre covid, we saw Asians wearing masks regularity in the big cities. Think they will be with us for a long time yet.

    • Rhys says:

Yes, I think masks are probably around to stay for the rest of the year. Let’s see.

      • Cal says:

What is your opinion on a July trip to SEA? Got it in the Virgin 50% points sale. Will be under 30 so doubtful we will have one vaccine shot let alone both.

    • Lyn says:

Hope your trip works for September, Polly.

I do think masks are quite likely to still be mandatory then for most places on the US West Coast.

  • Nigel W says:

Good news regarding the Centurion Magazine will still be going. I sell old copies we get on ebay and get some decent £ for them.

  • Alan says:

Jet Blue has by far the best terminal at JFK with its own immigration. If they can achieve reasonably painless connections within the terminal they will do very well indeed.
