Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

NEW: Earn bonus points adding someone to your Marriott, Nectar or ARCC Amex card

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Adding a supplementary cardholder to your American Express card has two key benefits:

  • you earn points, and trigger sign-up bonuses, more quickly when two people are carrying a card
  • you receive a second batch of cardholder cashback offers, as long as the supplementary card is registered online

On most of the American Express cards, you would also receive bonus points for adding a supplementary cardholder.

This is NOT usually a benefit for holders of the Marriott, Nectar, Amex Rewards Credit Card or Harrods American Express card. However, for a limited period, it is – see the Amex website here.

Until 31st July, you will receive:

This are valuable incentives, given that the supplementary card is free:

  • 3,000 Marriott Bonvoy points are worth £15 using HfP valuations
  • 3,000 Nectar points are worth 1,875 Avios, which are worth £18.75 using HfP valuations (or use them for £15 of Sainsbury’s shopping)
  • 2,000 Membership Rewards points are worth 2,000 Avios (£20 on our valuations) if you choose to use them for that
  • 1,000 Harrods Rewards points are worth £10

The points will post very quickly. You should see them within 3-4 days of applying for the supplementary card. There is no requirement to spend a particular amount on the supplementary card.

How to apply

American Express has a special website for adding supplementary cards which you can find here.

This page also contains the standard supplementary card offers for the core Amex cards.

You cannot apply for a supplementary American Express Rewards Credit Card via that page. You need to log into your online Amex account and follow the link on your statement page, which may be under the ‘Offers’ section.

These special offers for adding supplementary American Express cards will run until 31st July.

  • Harrier25 says:

Seems strange that the article above promotes ARCC where the offer isn’t applicable and misses off Green where the offer is applicable.

    • Sandgrounder says:

I can confirm the points are available on the ARCC, I received them this morning.

    • Rob says:

Didn’t see Green, will add. Not that any readers have one ….

It is on ARCC but not on this website.

      • Doug M says:

I have a green. Downgraded a plat with expectation on upgrade bonus when travelling again.

        • Alex W says:

          Ditto.

          • Harrier25 says:

A sweeping statement from Rob there…..no readers have Green. The offers are much better on Green than ARCC which easily complements the £60 annual fee. I know because I have both cards.

        • Aston100 says:

Are there any genuine advantages for the green card over the arcc that justify the annual fee?

          • Harrier25 says:

Better offers, an additional year’s warranty when the manufacturer warranty expires, accident, delay and lost luggage travel insurance.

          • Doug M says:

I believe also the chance for 20K MR when upgrading to the plat.

  • Fm says:

Am I right in thinking this only applies to the first supplementary card? Have one already, was hoping this would apply to a second…

    • Sandgrounder says:

My MR statement says ‘add a supp bonus once only’ in the description.

  • Johnny5a says:

Not sure if this is new or ongoing, Gold Business card is offering up to 5 supplementary cards each with a bonus of 3000 points. Seen in the “Offers” section

    • Rob says:

This offer comes and goes, worth grabbing when you see. Bus Plat is 5k when available.

      • Johnny5a says:

system is having issues this morning, the offer is on my app but comes and goes on the offers section on the website. Question – does the 10,000 Gold anniversary bonus exist on the business version?

        • Justin says:

Just checked, unfortunately I don’t see any 10k MR bonus tracker for the Gold Card Business version.

          • Johnny5a says:

Thanks for confirming, I couldn’t see it either but worth checking in case i missed it

      • Graeme says:

Is it still worth grabbing if the person has been given the boot by Amex in the past?

  • Philip says:

Does the supplementary card holder get credit checked?

    • Rob says:

They get checked that they exist, that’s it. Electoral roll etc.

    • Kai says:

Virtually no check as long as you tick the same address box

      • Track says:

That is not true. The person needs to have a credit record.

Further, if their regular address is different from yours, AMEX will not send their supplementary card to you.

  • Kevin D says:

So would it be ok to add the missus as supplementary card holder to my Bonvoy even though she has her own Bonvoy? And vice versa? This wouldn’t signal any sort of “fraud” issue or anything?

    • Aston100 says:

I don’t have the Bonvoy card, but this has never been a problem on a bunch of other cards I have or had in the past.

    • Rob says:

No, numerous reasons why you may genuinely be doing this, eg trying to hit min spend for a bonus or the £15k Gold / £25k free night voucher.

  • Dave says:

Trying to add a supplementary on my wife’s nectar amex and get an error message of: Sorry, the American Express online application is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

Maybe HFP readers have overloaded the system!

  • QFFlyer says:

Thanks for highlighting, I just added a supp to BAPP the other day and hadn’t noticed this – I’ve never bothered adding one to ARCC until now, might as well for the extra points.

  • meta says:

So the bonus points appeared overnight for me, but the transaction line says “1st supp bonus, once only”. It seems IT has been fixed to issue bonus only on one supp. I do have one supp on the account from before.
