TAP Air Portugal has launched a week-long Business Class sale.

There are some excellent deals, with some of the lowest pricing I have ever seen to North America.  There are also good prices to Africa, Brazil and – if you want a bit more comfort for your short-haul flights – Portugal, the Azores and Spain.

Importantly, all of these offers are available for UK departures from either:

  • London Heathrow
  • London Gatwick or
  • Manchester

….. so you don’t need to start your trip outside the UK to get a good deal.

You need to book by 5th May for travel by 15th September.

You can find details on the TAP website here.

TAP Portugal business class sale

What deals are available?

Starting in the UK:

To North America:

  • Boston – £999
  • Chicago – £999
  • Miami – £999
  • Montreal – £999
  • New York – £999
  • San Francisco – £999
  • Toronto – £999
  • Washington – £999

You can also fly to Cancun.

To Africa:

  • from £1,289 (Praia, Sal, Sao Vicente, Dakar, Accra, Abidjan, Conakry, Bissau, Sao Tome)

To Brazil:

  • from £1,289 (Belem, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Maceio, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Paulo)

To mainland Portugal:

  • £299 (Lisbon, Porto, Faro)

To the Portuguese Islands:

  • from £399 (Funchal, Terceira, Ponta Delgada)

To Spain:

  • from £399

The booking page is here.  It can be a little fiddly to find dates with sale pricing because the ‘my dates are flexible’ button only covers economy pricing.  However, it is a decent bet that the dates with the cheapest economy pricing may also have the cheapest business class pricing.

TAP Portugal business class sale

Starting elsewhere in Europe:

TAP has a very simple pricing structure for this sale.

Swap the £ signs above for € signs and you have the pricing from Dublin, Amsterdam, Berlin etc.  This means that you could fly to New York for just €996 (£865) return from, say, Dublin.

Remember that, whilst you may get a cheaper flight if you start outside the UK:

  • you need to factor in the cost of getting to and from your starting city
  • you are taking an added risk in terms of covid travel requirements when you come to travel
  • you will be taking three flights in each direction on a long haul trip, when you also factor in the plane change in Lisbon

Personally, I wouldn’t bother if you live within easy reach of Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester.  If you live elsewhere with an easy connection to Dublin or Amsterdam you may think differently.

What can you do with the miles you earn?

TAP is part of Star Alliance.

You cannot credit your flights to British Airways Executive Club or Virgin Atlantic, neither of whom are in Star Alliance.  However, you can credit the miles to Lufthansa Miles & More or any other Star Alliance frequent flyer programme.

TAP is currently running an aggressive status match if you want to credit your flight to TAP’s Miles+Go programme – scroll down for details.

Our core article on ‘what is best Star Alliance frequent flyer scheme for you?’ is here.

What will I be flying?

TAP Portugal has been making a big push to grow market share over the last couple of years.

In terms of aircraft, it has recently taken delivery of a new fleet ofA320neo, A321neo and A330neo planes.   It is the first airline in the world to operate the A330neo and, overall, has one of the youngest fleets in the world.  You can find out more about the TAP neo fleet here.

An aggressive status match offer

TAP has been running a strong status match offer for the last few months.

For British Airways Executive Club members, this is what you can get:

Executive Club Gold = TAP Miles&Go Gold = Star Alliance Gold

Executive Club Silver = TAP Miles&Go Gold = Star Alliance Gold

Executive Club Bronze = TAP Miles&Go Silver = Star Alliance Silver

This is very generous if you have British Airways Silver status because TAP will match it to Miles+Go Gold.  This is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold, giving you status benefits not just on tap but across all 26 airlines in the alliance.

You can learn more about the TAP status match offer in this HfP article.

How to book

For UK departures, your best option to maximise your miles when paying is American Express Preferred Rewards GoldThis offers double Membership Rewards points – 2 per £1 – when you when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.  Our review of Amex Gold is here.

For non-UK departures, you should use a card without any foreign exchange fees irrespective of its miles-earning potential.

If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers triple points – 3 per £1 – when you book flight tickets in a foreign currency.  This is because the transaction should trigger the ‘double points for airline spend’ and the ‘double points for foreign spend’ bonuses.

Remember that you need to book by 5th May for travel by 15th September.

You can find out more, and book, on this special page of the TAP website here.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

The key, always, is will any country let you in.

EU still doesn’t let UK citizens – and those from a couple of hundred other non-EU countries – in. Unless they are registered EU citizens or residents. Can Spain and Greece survive without UK tourists? Probably. The Germans will be happy to have two holidays this summer!

    So May 17th doesn’t matter.

No mention here of transit arrangements in Lisbon if the USA decides to end the 14-day EU/UK rule either. Can the USA survive the summer without EU/UK tourists? Of course.

    So not for me.

    • Andrew says:

Isn’t May 6th/7th the important date for you Colin?

You’ll find out who your new First Minister is

      • ChrisC says:

No it’s the 8th as counting is being spread across 2 days – the Friday and Saturday to maintain social distancing at the count centres.

      • Nick says:

lol the FM is not going to change!

    • The Lord says:

Greece is open to UK citizens right now though?

      • Phillip says:

As is Cyprus! Albeit they are both in lockdown. And both will soon be accepting vaccinated Brits without testing requirements.

  • Stuart says:

I know times are hard, but it was bad enough when it was “head for Qatar” as it’s known in the office.
I won’t repeat how “head for TAP” has gone down today.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Do not under any circumstances book anything with TAP unless you’ve free cash to lose and it disappearing. You only have to look on their twitter to see how awful this company is. Avoid!!!!!

    • Alan says:

Yes, agree! DON’T book with TAP! It took me 6+ months of multiple phone calls / emails / online requests of refund, no response, then sent a Twitter to push for it, finally received the refund last week. Their IT & customer service don’t exist, terrible! Every time I called their customer service, no matter the London office or HQ, always cut off half way…….Lots of complains on Twitter, I can see some people are even waiting longer time than me for their refund

      • Lady London says:

Plus they ignore any EU261 claim. Literally ignore it apparently. Saw somewhere an official body in Germany finally sued TAP, judgment of course went against TAP quite readily, and I would be surprised if TAP even voluntarily did or paid what the court ordered.

I’d still fly them one way to or from the US which is what their pricing is good for. But I’d buy only a flight no more than two weeks away to give the shortesr window for anything ti go wrong. But would I fly them? H*** Yes.

    • Ross says:

I have to agree. I know this is a sponsorship but I’ve only ever had poor experiences with TAP. Even after going through ADR they still haven’t paid EU261 from a flight almost two years ago. CS is also very poor.
I know all airlines have problems but TAP has really let me down before and regrettably I know lots of people with bad experiences with them.

  • John says:

These are very common sale prices with TAP. There’s nothing “exceptional” about them. It’s a mid-range product, with elements equivalent to Premium Eco on other carriers, eg LOT.

    • Rob says:

It’s a brand new A330neo and, at least for the West Coast, at least 33% below anything else you’re going to find.

    • ChrisC says:

Which elements of TAP business class are the equivalent of Premium Eco?

I didn’t find any of the flight I was on to be Premium Eco.

Indeed the seat was great and better than BAs Club seat offering.

  • bafan says:

I’ve done Stockholm to Lisbon a fair few times and they’ve bunged the A321 LR or whatever their new plane is on the route due to the distance. Nice flight but I couldn’t imagine sitting on it for 8 hours to New York.

  • david says:

Had our £185 return flights LIS-MIA-LGW last month fall thru coz of Covid. Shame. Minor flight change allowed free refund. Thought it would be a horrendous year long wait. Glady received refund within a month. So was very impressed with customer services and would book again.
