Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 10th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • John says:

Someone said the other day their delayed virgin miles had been transferred from their credit to their Virgin accounts.
My points were due to transfer on 5th May.
Anyone else still waiting for delayed miles to transfer this month?

  • Lloyd says:

So I’ve just spoken to Amex to chase the 100k bonus. They’ve told me that there has been a change to the T&Cs prior to running that promotion, and the usual 40K bonus will post now (which they have), and you have to wait until after 3 months are up for the remaining 60k to post. I pushed them a little more, to play devils advocate and said ‘What happens if I wish to cancel the card now?” and after speaking to someone else, they have manually added the additional 60K on. Think they’ve made a mess of this one!

    • Ali M says:

      thanks for the heads up

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s just the standard Amex CS BS everything is wait 90 days just keep bugging someone and they’ll sort it out

  • Aliks says:

IHG sent me an Ambassador renewal offer: renew by 1st June to get all the usual benefits plus a free night certificate renewable at Intercontinental, Kimpton or Regent hotels.

    The conditions attached are:
    1. Complete a qualifying stay at at one of these 3 brands by 31st August
    2. The Free night is capped at a value of 40k points and valid only to 30th November 2021

Given that I am drowning in unused IHG free nights and points, its hard to see any way to take advantage of this offer – unless IHG can be persuaded to extend the expiry of my free night vouchers.

Has anyone succeeded in persuading IHG to be more generous?

  • BSI1978 says:

Re Nectar/Avios conversion; does one need to just phone the usual BAEC numbers to process? Or is there a specific line for this….?

(posting again as my earlier post seems to have been deleted! – can’t imagine why…….)

  • Red Flyer says:

Trying to redeem Iberia flights using Avios but cannot see prices after 28/3/22 using points – are they available +322 days and not +355 like BA?

    • marcw says:

I don’t think IB has loaded any flights for the 22 Summer Season, which starts on the last Sunday of March.

  • TonyT says:

I’ve been on the BA Gold line waiting for 30Mins + anyone else tried getting through today?

    • Rhys says:

Calling BA in general right now is a bit of a nightmare, the call centres are closed in India which means everyone has to go via UK

    • BS says:

At 9am today wait was 30s. Recommend calling early.

    • Rory says:

I called at around 3pm and got straight through to the UK with literally 0 wait. About 3 rings and got someone

  • James says:

GBP is @ $1.41, I guess that’ll go up to $1.50 before coming back.

  • James says:

    UK records four Covid deaths

    • Navara says:

Looks like Boris’s strategy has worked then.Hopefully it’s safe for me to go on holiday next week

      • James says:

Those old people are going to die of something.

Looks to me as if we hit zero Covid excess deaths, thanks to vaccine strategy & herd immunity.

    • TGLoyalty says:

And how much have total deaths fallen this month …

      • James says:

You’d like to find a way for old people not to die of something?

        • James says:

Brain power lacking? Of course old people die of something.

Covid-19 looks to be a minimal influence in their deaths going forward.

Flu, Covid-19, Pneumonia, heart, old age – of course they will die. Of something.

          Hopefully after a happy life.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Seems you’re wide of the mark once again.
