We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

    I’m sure this has been answered before, but I can’t find the comment (or any official documentation to back it up!).
    If a flight has been cancelled well in advance, is there a deadline by which I must decide whether to take a refund or re-routing? I just called BA and they said that if I want re-routing (i.e. change of date), then I have to decide that by the original departure date of the cancelled flight. Otherwise they’ll only be able to process a refund.
    How true is this? At the moment I don’t want to commit to a future date to travel by, and I booked in the 50% Avios sale so would like to avoid a refund if poss.

      The bit to be careful of is ” subject to availability” in article 8.1(c) of EC261:2004 which is for a re-routing at a later date. BA just wants you to be decisive to suit the practicalities of their systems, their booking window isn’t as far as easyJet’s into 2022, but it is pretty good.

        If there are cash seats on your chosen date then there is obviously availability so this caveat in regulation doesn’t matter. Also even if there were no cash seats they would have to put you on any other airline which has availability.

        You have full re-routing rights, but you might need to exercise your rights via MCOL (or CEDR which can be 3x longer than MCOL). Have a look at previous chat threads. There is ample information about the process and how to approach BA.
