Amazing points deal at the W Abu Dhabi hotel for the 2021 F1 Grand Prix

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you follow the hotel ‘scene’, or indeed Formula 1, you may know that there is a hotel built across the Formula 1 track in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island.

It looks like this:

Yas Island hotel

The hotel was launched as a Viceroy but was taken over by Marriott.  Following a spell as the Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi it is now operating, following refurbishment, as the W Abu Dhabi.

The website is here if you want to find out more.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix usually takes place every November, but in 2021 it is over the weekend of 10th to 12th December, with the 12th being the main race.

Amazingly, despite rooms at the W over the Grand Prix weekend selling for crazy prices – since the track runs through the hotel – reward availability has opened up.

It appears that you need to book a 6-night minimum stay over the Grand Prix weekend, from Tuesday 7th December to Monday 13th December.  The race is Sunday.

Here is the cash rate for the cheapest non-refundable room.  These are probably rooms on the side overlooking the marina, not the track.

To save you getting your calculator out, Dhs 24,391 is £4,691.  Bargain.

However, this is what you get if you book with Marriott Bonvoy points.  Remember that Bonvoy offers ‘5 nights for the points of 4’:

The 6-night package costs you just 190,000 Marriott Bonvoy points as a Category 5 hotel, which I value, at my standard 0.5p per point, at £950.

(Whichever option you book, there is an additional fee of Dhs 350 per night over the four nights of the event to cover your track pass, which includes all of the music events in the evenings.)

Quite a saving, to put it mildly.  Now, flights are not going to be a bargain although with all the options into Dubai and Abu Dhabi (a taxi from Dubai to the hotel will only be around £40 and will take an hour) it probably won’t be as bad as you think.  British Airways has dropped flights to Abu Dhabi, but Qatar Airways is now flying to various points in the UAE again and can be booked with Avios.

You should do some research into exactly what viewpoint the hotel can offer you of the circuit if you want to watch from your room.  In the past, people have been given track-side rooms irrespective of what they booked.  Even if you can’t see the track from your room, you have access to the grandstands plus other vantage points.

Take a look at this, which is the view that a HfP reader had from his room when he redeemed for this deal in 2018.

There is a 30% bonus when you buy Marriott Bonvoy points at present, although if they take a few hours to post there is a risk that the rooms have gone.

Not for me. Way too many ethical issues with Abu Dhabi, F1 and sportwashing. Can’t turn a blind eye to their treatment of women, criminalisation of homosexuality and appalling inequality for the sake of a fancy view.

    • Dominic says:

      Thanks for the added value.

Thank goodness inequality in England isn’t completely rampant (though you are not incorrect about the other areas.. each to their own).

    • Simon says:

7am Monday morning and the fun police have already arrived.

      • Toddy says:

        Simon,
You may not care about the equal treatment of your fellow human beings but plenty of people do.

      • CarpalTravel says:

Fun police? You should see how fun the police are out there.

A friend got arrested in his hotel room for having taken a photo of a restricted building earlier in the day. Turns out it was in the distant background of the building he was actually taking a photo of. It was a terrible experience for him and his family and a costly one.

  • Andrew says:

If only it wasn’t on the red list…

  • N says:

    Booked this on Saturday night!

    Hope it happens…

  • Zed says:

I have carried over last year’s booking which was 5 nights for the price of 4 for 120,000 points, breakfast included. 190,000 for this year is still good value.

    • Memesweeper says:

If you get to enjoy it, @Zed, I think you will have won the HfP bargain redemption of the year.

To put your 120k in context it was 75k in 2020 to get two O2 seats for Harry Styles.

      • N says:

I’d raise you my Langley stay in Dec…

One night, 3 course dinner for 2, breakfast, cocktails, 2x Spa treatments and afternoon tea all in for net 15k Marriott + £80

        • Si says:

          Spill the beans on method…

There in july on a postponed points stay (35k/night) and nothing I enjoy more than not paying for most of it!

They’ve already said they’ll through in free breakie as I’ve been trying to stay for so long.

I’m prob their most loyal customer with bookings although still yet to actually set foot in the place

          • N says:

It was a freak one where a few different offers stacked. Last Dec there was the v generous spend £x get £x (£200 off £400?) back on the Plat, combined with another one (£75 off £200?), and maybe another one on my Marriott card (can’t remember!) combined with my Titanium status, combined with a 35k points booking. It all meant I earned back a big chunk of my outlay back in points on spend that was severely reduced through offers.

            Can’t see it repeating really!

          • Si says:

I guess I’ll have to rely on the old charm and hope for administrative errors then to keep the cost down 🙂

      • Zed says:

Yeah, fingers crossed me/my mate get to go, its been a year of cancellations. Just got told UEFA have taken back my Euro 2020 tickets for England group matches and semis. My Lions tour tickets no longer happening. Lost my Champions League final tickets last year, as well as my Queen’s Club final ticket (albeit that’s rolled over to next year). Not to mention we missed out on this Grand Prix last year so fingers crossed it still happens. I did manage to book a one way Abu Dhabi to Heathrow with Etihad for 60k miles in First (booked on a promotion back in August 2020, but carried over to Dec 21 following more cancellations etc) so hoping to enjoy the return journey.

    • Harry T says:

Check your booking because my moved booking is only showing as a points advance.

      • r* says:

Mine was showing as points advance, I emailed them and they said that there was a voucher attached to the booking and not to worry about it.

Have you contacted them or done anything about it?

  • Paul says:

    Sold out

    • Andrew says:

I would imagine it’s highly unlikely that anyone will be going to UAE this year, so you didn’t miss out on much.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Reason why I didn’t even look.

        • Babyg says:

Like many (eg Zed), those who booked for 2019 @ 120k (5nights) simply “banked” this great chance to book. To date Marriott have been more than amazing moving the booking 2019 to 2020, and now to 2021… And now that Qatar fly to AUH its easier to get rewards flights there/back… Shame its sold out again…. but thats the power of a HFP post i guess … Seems there will be a few HFPs there.. we need a separate meet-up forum for it… Based on whats happening globally i feel there is a decent chance this will happen in 2021… otherwise marriott will look after us..

          • N says:

Yup. I umm’d and aah’d over this in 2019 (booking for 2020) and have been regretting it since. V happy I’ve got a booking in for this year, and wouldn’t mind too much if it got bumped to 2022, really.

      • Rob says:

I imagine it’s very likely, since all it requires is Emirates to isolate their UK flights and only accept point to point bookings. Sure they would be happy to do this once peak tourist season resumes.

        • Adil says:

Assuming Shapps’ comment on Dubai’s inclusion on the red list due to it being a transit locations was sincere. Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Madrid are all significant transit locations and aren’t on the list.

          • TGLoyalty says:

exactly and Qatar, actually the busiest transit location at the time, took an additional 6 weeks

          • Memesweeper says:

Following that logic Heathrow ought to be on the red list.

  • Adam says:

Off topic: I am looking to sign up to IC AMB. Would like to use the voucher this long weekend? – Is it now digital or still posted?

  • N says:

Too early to get an HfP’s reader’s email thread on the go for this? Or am I getting too excited…?

  • AndyGWP says:

Do I recall cancellation terms are usually evil for these types of redemptions?

Was it the same for this redemption? (Before it sold out)?

    • Babyg says:

when i booked in 2019 you could cancel like any redemption… unsure what the 2021 rules/f1 are…

    • N says:

At one point in 2019, cancellation or no-show was a full whack payment of the cash price of the room (~£5k).

For the booking made this weekend you could cancel up to 2 days before check in, for free.
