Good Amex offers with B&Q, Rimowa and top UK independent hotels

Two new American Express cashback offers turned up yesterday which are well worth flagging.

You need to see if you are targetted by looking at the ‘Offers’ page in the Amex app, or on the website, for each card you own.

Before we get into the travel offers, I want to flag a B&Q offer which was scheduled to launch overnight.

As we covered last week, B&Q is now accepting American Express cards. To promote the partnership, you should see a cashback offer of £5 back on a £40 spend showing on all of your Amex cards. It runs until 4th July.

A good return with Rimowa luggage

If you are in the market for some upmarket luggage, there is an interesting deal with Rimowa.

You can take a look at what they offer on the Rimowa website here.

  • on Gold and Platinum cards, and potential some others, you receive 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points if you spend £500 at Rimowa by 31st July
  • on British Airways American Express cards, you receive 10,000 bonus Avios if you spend £500 at Rimowa by 31st July

If you have access to both offers, take the Membership Rewards version. You can convert the 10,000 points into 10,000 Avios if you wish, but you also have flexibility to use them for another partner if you prefer. This flexibility is worth having.

As well as their classic range of suitcases – see image below – Rimowa also sells:

Rimowa American Express offer

£100 cashback at top independent hotels

If you need somewhere to show off with your new suitcase, American Express has also launched an offer with the Relais & Chateaux hotel group.

You will receive £100 cashback on a spend of £400+ by 31st August.

A lot of top independent hotels in the UK are part of Relais & Chateaux. The offer is valid across Europe, however, and is especially strong in France.

Whilst you are asked to book via the Relais & Chateaux website, the offer is triggered by checkout spend.

This means that you could book via American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts (if you have The Platinum Card) for the extra benefit it brings. I would also strongly recommend asking our luxury hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas (click here) for a quote as he can usually get you extra benefits on your stay.

From the UK list, I would highlight:

  • Chewton Glen
  • The Vineyard at Stockcross
  • Lucknam Park
  • Gidleigh Park
  • Longueville Manor (for anyone heading to Jersey)
  • Cliveden
  • 11 Cadogan Gardens
  • Grantley Hall

…… but there are plenty more to choose too. My wife also had it on her supplementary Platinum card, so we would save £200 if we spent £800 and split the bill into two at check-out.

  • Phillip says:

A number of the listed R&C hotels can also be booked under Mr&Mrs Smith available through IHG.

  • Alex says:

The Amazon offer on my Plat CB card indeed triggered via a 20 quid account balance top-up.

  • BJ says:

Ok my tip for the week and especially for the romantics and those celebrating something special – Glenapp Castle (if it’s included in the relais offer). If you don’t want to pay the price for multiple nights then you could do one or two nights here and do a few nights at Trumps place nearby, which is selling dirt cheap at the moment, using Bonvoy points.

    • Fastbowler says:

Glenapp Castle is just excellent. One of our favourite hotels anywhere.

  • Andrew says:

The Rimowa image you used is not of “classic range of suitcases” – these are the “Essential” range. Classic is only in silver or black and made of aluminium rather than the plastic Essential ones pictured.

  • Annabel says:

Was in B&Q yesterday and they wouldn’t take Amex – is it only live from today?

    • Andrew says:

Possibly the update just hasn’t hit the local server/till yet.

But nowadays that jars with me a bit, and I start to wonder what other updates and patches haven’t hit business critical systems.

    • Stu p says:

Bizarrely there are 3 near me and only one is on the list to take it🤔

    • ThinkSquare says:

The other day my Amex got rejected for a small contactless payment. The cashier said “oh, Amex only works if you put your card in the slot”. And she was right. I don’t know how widespread this is.

      • Rui N. says:

It happens now and then. For example Asda was like that for a while – my local one now accepts Amex contactless. Wilko the same. When in doubt, if contactless is rejected, try to insert the Amex card to see if it works.

      • Rob says:

Forgotten which one but a small shop near us has the same issue.

        • KBuffett says:

The issue is that many PDQ machines require AmEx contactless to be activated physically and manually on each terminal. Most companies don’t know this and staff members can’t generally be bothered push with management to get the issue resolved.

          • Chas says:

I’m sure that’s the case, but I suspect that something else might be up; I have the same issue as Rui N. at my local butcher, but only intermittently – contactless normally works, but quite frequently I have to put the card in the slot. I know that some card companies do that occasionally to ensure that the person holding the card is the account holder, but it never, ever happens anywhere else. Just my local butcher once every few weeks.

      • Number9 says:

Same in Lloyds chemist contactless doesn’t work with Amex putting card in machine does.

      • planeconcorde says:

Same at GWR stations when paying at the manned ticket counter. AMEX does not work contactless, need to insert the card into the slot. At least it was the last time I travelled by train, which was last year.

    • barnaby100 says:

no, it has been live at ours since at least Sunday 17th. They told me when they saw the card in my wallet- no signs

    • Lee says:

The website still doesn’t take Amex either. “Sorry, we don’t accept Amex cards” is displayed when you type in the number.

  • Czechoslovakia says:

In a more modest version of the film “Up in the air”, my goal when I started collecting M&M miles was a beautiful aluminium Rimowa XL case. Thankfully, well before I reached that target, I came across a little website called HeadForPoints… Thanks Rob for saving me from being made a fool of by Lufty!

  • M says:

Buying my Rimowa for £350 4years back, feels like an bargain today 😄

  • Nicholas says:

R & C offer not appeared on any of my cards
