British Airways launches a new sale – what is worth a look?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways has launched a new sale, covering travel for later in 2021 and early 2022.

The timing is not great, given the Green List developments yesterday, but if you are prepared to book ahead, it offers good savings on both flights and holiday packages.

There are some decent prices and you have until 22nd June to book.

You can see all deals available on the sale section of ba.com here.

What are the BA sale flight prices?

You can find a number of very good sale fares flying in Club Europe and Club World (business class) or World Traveller (economy class).

Here are some ‘lead-in’ prices in Club Europe (each-way)

For selected outbound travel dates between November 2021 and March 2022, for trips including a Saturday night stay:

  • Alicante from £97
  • Malaga from £100
  • Porto from £94
  • Pisa from £86
  • Prague from £90
  • Valencia from £88

We will take a separate look at any good tier point run options in a later article.

Here are some ‘lead in’ prices for Club World flights:

For selected outbound travel dates which vary by destination for return flights.

  • Cancun £1,446
  • New York from £1,267
  • San Francisco from £1,467
  • Los Angeles from £1,467
  • Nashville from £1,385
  • Rio from £1,487
  • Sao Paulo from £1,499
  • Cape Town from £2,197
  • Tel Aviv from £985
  • Hong Kong from £1,790
  • Singapore from £1,791

Use ‘Part Pay With Avios’ for additional savings

There are improved ‘Part Pay With Avios’ offers running throughout the sale period.

Our most recent review of ‘Part Pay With Avios’ is here and explains when ‘Part Pay With Avios’ makes sense.

The exact discount you will see varies by route, but it is always worth looking at the numbers. You can often get 1p per Avios for using a small quantity to pay for part of your booking.

‘Book with Confidence’ is still running

Remember that, under the British Airways ‘Book With Confidence’ guarantee, you can cancel your flight at any time, for any reason, for a British Airways ‘Future Travel Voucher’

This applies to bookings for travel by 30th April 2022.  The voucher must be used for a flight which is taken by 30th April 2023.

If your flight is cancelled by British Airways for any reason, you will receive a full cash refund. Based on my own experience from a cancellation last month, you will have your money within a couple of days of requesting it – there appear to be no delays in processing refunds at present.

British Airways Holidays has discounted holidays and city breaks

British Airways Holidays has also got in on the act with a selection of ‘flight and hotel’ and ‘flight and car’ packages.

The key thing to know about British Airways Holidays is that booking a flight and hotel, or flight and car hire, together can offer better value than booking each element separately.

These are the ‘lead in’ deals in the current sale.  There are lots of other options available which you can see if you look here.

Club Europe (business) – flights plus hotel

  • Algarve – five nights at the 5* Monte Santo resort from £755 pp in August
  • Corfu – seven nights at the 5* Ikos Dassia from £1,353 per person in October

Club World (business) – flights plus hotel

  • New York – four nights at the 4* DoubleTree by Hilton Times Square West from £1,299pp, travelling in January
  • Miami – four nights at the 5* Confidante by Hyatt from £1,928pp, travelling in January
  • St Lucia – seven nights at the 5* Sandals Regency La Toc Golf Resort & Spa from £1,893pp, travelling in November
  • Montego Bay – seven nights at the 5* Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall from £2,322pp, travelling in October

Booking a British Airways Holidays package also gives you additional protection in case there are any issues with your flights or hotel, due to the strong legally-binding ATOL scheme.

Under the British Airways Holidays coronavirus guarantee, if you book a holiday for travel up to 30th April 2022, you can amend your booking for free (just pay the difference in price) or cancel it and get a voucher for travel up until 30th April 2023.

British Airways June sale

Other little known benefits of booking with British Airways Holidays ….

Just pay a deposit now

As usual with British Airways Holidays you don’t have to pay in full when booking. You can secure the deal with a small deposit and then pay the balance three weeks before departure. This is a substantial extra benefit compared to just booking flights.

British Airways Holidays has recently reduced the minimum deposit required. You can pay as little as £60 per person.

You get a degree of cancellation flexibility

If you only pay the deposit now, you can walk away from your booking at any point and your deposit will be turned into a Future Travel Voucher for travel until April 2022.

For travel after that date, you sill have a degree of cancellation flexibility. You can cancel up to three weeks before departure, which is when the final payment is due. You will lose your deposit but that is an excellent outcome compared to having to walk away from pre-paid non-refundable flights.

Bonus Avios

You earn a bonus 1 Avios per £1 you spend when booking with British Airways Holidays. You can find out more on ba.com here.

This bonus is on top of the Avios and tier points you will earn from the flights which are the same as you would get for booking a ‘flight only’, and from your credit card.

Remember that British Airways Holidays spending earns you double Avios (3 per £1) if you charge it to a British Airways Premium Plus American Express card.

Bonus tier points

In addition to the extra Avios, any BA Holiday bookings for travel between 9th June and 30th September are also eligible for BA’s current double tier points offer. You can read more about this offer here.

Don’t forget that tier point targets have also been reduced by 25% which should make (re)qualifying for Executive Club status even easier.

Find out more on ba.com here.

…. plus lounge access and use of the First Wing

If you don’t already have status you can also get access to the Galleries Club or Galleries First lounges at Heathrow for travel between 9th June and 30th September.

If you spend £1,500 or more on a BA Holidays package you get Fast Track security and Club lounge access.

If you book Club Europe or Club World flights and spend £2,500 per person or more you’ll be able to use The First Wing and access the Galleries First lounge.

You can see the full terms and conditions of this offer on the BA Holidays website here.

A non-benefit – no OnBusiness points

The only downside of using British Airways Holidays is that the flights do not earn On Business points in BA’s small business loyalty scheme.

How to pay for your British Airways sale booking

To maximise your miles when paying, your best bet is the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card which earns double Avios (3 per £1) when you book at ba.com or via BA Holidays

You do not get double Avios if you book with the free British Airways American Express card

Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.

Conclusion

The British Airways June sale home page is here where you can find out more and get your head around what is available.

Remember that you need to book by midnight on 22nd June.

  • Nick says:

One big thing that the blogs appear to have missed is that BA’s CCO is leaving at the end of this month. He’s been the major driving force behind all of the customer-friendly flexible booking options, including BWC and its various extensions. His replacement is the current head of rev man, the department famous for hating customers, so it’s safe to assume there won’t be any more extensions beyond what’s currently in place. As flights for next May are now being sold, please no one assume that flexibility will be extended later.

    • bafan says:

If the flexible options go then they won’t see another £ of mine until this is completely over. Why would I give them money if we don’t know that we can go, and flexible options were not there?

    • marcw says:

I doubt that’s a sole decision of the CCO.

  • Colin says:

Anybody know? I am looking to book BA cash flights (not BA holiday & no avios involved) for next April for 6 people returning before 30 April 2022. If we subsequently decide not to travel (health, ongoing uncertainty etc) would we get a FTV or an e-voucher? A FTV would be no good as the 6 names would be `tied-in` and I know that 2 of the 6 would not want a subsequent trip late 2022/early 2023 before FTV end date of April 2023, wheras an e-voucher is more flexible allowing new/different names to be added. Reluctant to give BA several grand now unless assured that an e-voucher is guaranteed. Thanks

    • ChrisC says:

Plain cash only booking = e voucher

      • Nick says:

In theory it’s an e-voucher. However, the T&C don’t guarantee that – they only refer to FTV. So if for whatever reason your booking becomes complex and they don’t give you one, then you’d have no recourse. It’s a fairly low risk, but you need to be comfortable that there is one.

        • TravelZombie says:

Just to be clear, definitely don’t put all 6 names on one booking. From BA’s Voucher FAQs: “Currently, we’re only able to issue eVouchers for certain booking types. For example, if your booking has multiple passengers or you’ve purchased extra baggage, we’ll send you a future travel voucher.”

        • Colin says:

Yes – thanks for that. Appears to be no guarantee of the e-voucher for cash bookings in the t&cs despite a lot of folks stating (here & on flyer talk) that it will be an e-voucher. That element of risk is worrying when looking at a booking of over £5k. Will phone & try to get something definitive by email.

          • Nick says:

You can ask a hundred people but they won’t give you the answer you want. Unless you speak to the actual people in rev man who own the policy – and even then they probably won’t either. You could always split the booking into 3 (for example) if you wanted to limit exposure.

  • Magic Mike says:

Cancelled and rebooked some (speculative) flights to Greece for 25% less, cheers BA 🙂
