Hilton Singapore to move to IHG and become a voco hotel

IHG has announced that it is taking over the Hilton Singapore hotel on Orchard Road.

The property is scheduled to join IHG on 1st January 2022, when it will become the first voco hotel in South East Asia.

The change appears to have been driven by the decision of The Mandarin Orchard Singapore to rebrand as the Hilton Singapore Orchard. This will be the largest Hilton property in the Asia Pacific region.

Hilton Singapore to move to IHG

voco is IHG’s new ‘conversion’ brand. We discussed voco and conversion brands here, but in simple terms they allow an existing hotel to join a global group without having to spend heavily to meet a huge list of ‘brand standards’. Whilst this can sound like a bad thing, in reality there is a high level of quality control. The voco hotels we have seen to date (voco St David’s in Cardiff was reviewed here) have been decent.

voco is starting to attract new build hotels as well, with the first new property just opened in Edinburgh.

You can learn more about the voco brand on this page of the IHG website.

Stayed in the voco Dubai last week and it was disappointing, rooms are very dated ( it was only partially refurbished) and it just did not have the atmosphere of a 5 star hotel. But then the Conrad Dubai next door was also not great, and both girls were around £50-70 a night.

    • Paul pogba says:

Well that’s cheaper than buying them a posh dinner.

    • Peter says:

That should have said hotels 😀

    • Bill says:

      Haha

    • Michael C says:

Freud would have a field day with you, Peter!

    • Benilyn says:

Lots of IHG opening up / opened in Dubai with Indigo Dubai, CP Marina + Jumeirah, 2 new staybridges, and Voco Bonnington. I think all conversion properties.

      • Peter says:

Yeah the voco Dubai was the Radisson Royal before apparently

    • kitten says:

      Freudian slip? 🙂
not the prices my friend told me about in Dubai?

  • Andrew says:

Regent Street is definitely an interesting offer. Perhaps driven by the Landlord? The Crown Estate also own the shopping centre in Northamptonshire that’s running the £60/£10 Amex offer.

    • Michael C says:

Would not be surprised: some prime locations close/empty there last week.
Anyone know if the Zara Home closure is temporary/permanent?!

    • Jody says:

I got this offer for Rushden Lakes, I assume because I live in Northamptonshire!

Stayed in the Voco Edinburgh last week. Upgraded to a seventh floor room as Spire Elite and used my drinks voucher for a pint of Stella (£5) with my meal.
Room wasn’t big, but was fresh and comfortable. Think there was only one seat and felt the fold-out luggage frame thing you are meant to put your suitcase on just didn’t have a place to go where it was out of the way, or wouldn’t look out of place.
Staff at check-in were super friendly and helpful, food was deep-fried pub food. Ate at the hotel because I was covered in plaster dust after being with electricians rewiring our flat and just wanted to shower and eat. Paid about £58 for the night.

Also tried the HI Picardy Place, about £35 for the night. Gosh, it is poor. Corridors etc tired. Sink was cracked, and from the brown stain in the cracks had been for a while. Group of old ladies in the breakfast room, one coughing away. Thought she was a smoker and then thought: they have signs everywhere about Covid and continuous coughs – but no-one on staff giving a stuff. So with poor housekeeping/maintenance, hall carpets looking as though they needed a steam clean, and that, I am not convinced they are taking hygiene seriously.
Final stay, HI at the zoo. £29 for a twin room, £34 for a double. So booked the cheapest. Got the cheapest. No recognition as an “elite”. Robotic check-in. Room was tired – varnished furniture needed a refresh, paint on back of the bathroom door was showing the grain of the ply through it. Why not tidy up some of these rooms during lockdowns ready for the post-pandemic surge? Still, did the job. Never even looked at the rest of the hotel (bar and restaurant being refurbed at the moment).
Have been in the HI Picardy Place several times, always disappointed. Not going back. Have tried the Indigo in York Place, wasn’t impressed by the rooms – it is an old building and a bit of a warren. The Crowne Plaza in Royal Terrace has always given us good rooms – and parking free at the weekends!

    • Nick says:

“Why not tidy up the rooms during a period when they’ve got no money coming in and no idea when it’ll all be over and they can start again”

Not as easy as it sounds… you have no idea of the status of their bank balance or the willingness/ability of their investors to stump up extra cash.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

    Forgot to add:

Chap on check-in at the Voco said: We have only been open a few days and your are a Spire Elite, so you must have stayed in lots and lots of hotels. So we would be really really interested in your feedback.

Didn’t have the heart to tell him we spend £55k a year on a credit card!

    • Anna says:

The receptionist at the Langley said the same to me about Marriott gold! I mumbled something about not being able to do many hotel stays in the past year and left out the Platinum Amex involvement 🤫

      • Harry T says:

I’m hoping the Langley lose their shit when I check in as a Titanium in July then 😂

        • Lady London says:

🙂 Unlikely. The Langley apparently has great hard product. But no idea really of the behaviours employed by a true luxury hotel. At least according to the multiple surprises reported on here by posters.

          • Rupert says:

Service is terrible unfortunately. Got better service at Portsmouth Marriott. Definitely not 5 star and glad I book using points rather than cash

        • Anna says:

You might only have to wait one hour for your room instead of 2.5! Seriously though, if it’s warm when you arrive head straight to the outdoor pool and see if there are a couple of free loungers. Such a pleasant novelty when you live in the north! Though be aware there are guests who clearly have loads of money but no manners like the couple who let their two young children hog a lounger each while there were adults sitting on the ground! My son would have been told to offer up his lounger to a grown up.

          • Jonathan says:

Were the kids watching YouTube on their iPads at full volume as well? Generally parents like this only look after their kids when on holiday so are clueless.

          • Anna says:

No, thankfully! We have a rule for that as well, if anyone can hear it, it’s too loud. My son learned from a very early age that headphones are essential travel kit lol.

          • Chrisasaurus says:

Mixed feelings on that thought process. Mine are raised to be respectful and would give up a seat for an adult in need of one but not to be subservient; assuming they’re not 4 and easily able to share a lounger I don’t teach or imply to mine that they have no right to be there

  • Michael C says:

My gym was in the Hilton SIN many many moons ago!
Always had a soft spot for it, although of course it was nowhere near the level of some of the Marina Bay places. Still, enjoyed it & cute pool for Orchard-based w/ends, but it very much needed a face lift, so looking forward to seeing what Voco does with it (and what Hilton does with the Mandarin Orchard, which has always seemed a little sad!).

  • Anna says:

I’m not hugely tempted by the IHG offer. In theory we could get amazing value for the Kimpton Seafire which is usually 70k points per night but over $1000 cash, but there’s no guarantee it won’t fall victim to the new “dynamic pricing” system by next year!

  • Ana says:

Can anyone confirm if the regent street offer is cumulative?

    • Bill says:

No I can’t confirm. But I do think it’s London centric yet again. Amex are almost as has as BA

  • AJA says:

There is a typo: “vovo is IHG’s new ‘conversion’ brand”
