The HfP chat thread – Friday 18th June

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Changing from Transferwise to Wise is still grating to me. Does anyone call it Wise? I just read an article in The Times calling it (the business formally known as).

    • TGLoyalty says:

      It’s about to float …

    • John says:

      Yes

    • Andrew says:

Just sounds like the funny little library catalogue terminals from the 80s.

    • Callum says:

I’d imagine the new customers that the branding is aimed at do.

I still call it TransferWise out of habit, but the branding does make sense to me given they’re now moving towards being a fully fledged bank.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Are they applying for a banking license? That’d be interesting.

        • Callum says:

Not yet (sorry if I was a little misleading!), they’re just moving towards it.

I can’t remember the exact wording, but their vision was to become an international banking organisation as opposed to a money transfer service. They’re half way there given they already supply bank accounts with debit card and direct debit functionality.

  • Anuj says:

Are there any partnerships with UEFA with any of the loyalty schemes? Wondering if there might be some option of getting EURO 2020 tickets with points

  • Kumar says:

Are there any credit cards /Bank accounts which offer Airbnb discount like the crypto card which gives 10% discount (lot to money to be staked for this offer) .

    • Mr. AC says:

Not in the UK, no. In other countries, yes, so if you are so lucky as to have citizenship / access to banking in markets without interchange rate regulation you might investigate that, and use those cards directly or via Curve.

  • Aslan says:

Quick questions (have read back through previous chats and in still unclear).
    1) Solihull feeding seagulls – does it need bendy?
    2 ) Does either route incur interest/fees?

  • Stephen says:

Due to fly to Bali from London via Doha in early August. Qatar has suspended flights from DOH to DPS (Bali) until 1st September. They have offered flights to other destinations (Thailand), but wanted to ask what is the chance of getting them to re-route?

    • Anna says:

If it’s all on one booking you should be covered by EU261 provisions, so it depends on how much of a fight you’re prepared to put up.
Have Bali and Thailand opened up to tourists yet, I’ve lost track?!

    • Michael C says:

Bali is still VERY restricted. You’d have a far better chance of entering, say, Phuket (also from DOH), on the condition you don’t leave the island: see their new reopening rules in the press.

    • Sam G says:

Bali is currently impossible for tourists. I’m not up with the latest but there was a workaround with a business visa via a local agent and then flying into Jakarta – facebook groups are best for the latest info – Bali Expat etc. Qatar are operating Jakarta and an internal flight from there won’t be worth arguing with Qatar about.

If this is a holiday if you really want a trip to Asia then Phuket will be your best (only?) bet – not forgetting that there is a risk that Qatar will still be red list on your way back . Personally I’d take the refund and plan it again for next year once the situation is clearer.

      • Clive says:

Phuket “Sandbox” is a little ridiculous as they are now stating that within the 14 days you must be there you will need 4 tests:

1 on day 1 (departure test is not accepted)
        1 on day 5
        1 on day 10
1 for return to the UK

Current costs are around B3500 so you are looking at £320 plus the pre departure UK test and day 2 and 8 tests.

They are also stating that visitors will be tagged.

        • Sam G says:

Ouch! the latest I’d seen was one extra antigen during your stay which wouldn’t be a big deal but it’s ever changing, hard to keep up. Our summer isn’t a great time to visit anyway can be rather wet

  • MW says:

Is there any way to pay Solihull with Amex? Tried Billhop but not supported (surprise, surprise). I was hoping to use that to hit a spend target, but I guess that won’t work and will need to look elsewhere.

    • Reney says:

just buy gift cards at what supermarket of your choice or amazon if you use it a lot

      • MW says:

That is probably what I will need to do, although most of our shopping is through Ocado these days.

Or I might need to do a Hotels.c booking

I was counting on one 5k+ transaction going through this month but that is now unlikely to happen before the deadline. Need to find on what to spend roughly 2k (in additional to the “normal” spend expected)

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Pay off council tax for the year?

  • rams1981 says:

Thanks for the heads up on BA availability to Mauritius yesterday. Booked St Regis. $400 a night for 5 nights or 210k points with one night free. Points a bargain I thought.

    • Memesweeper says:

      Nicely done… enjoy 😄

    • Rob says:

Yes, I need to think about this one. We have 7 nights so I’m tempted to split it, and would be willing to do a bit of StR to save cash, but not 5 + 2 elsewhere. Doing 4 is stupid though!

One option, as the flight lands 11am, is to use the 5th night free to guarantee late check out by effectively paying for the last night with the 5th free night which won’t be used.

    • NC says:

Beautiful hotel, amazing breakfast in the restaurant closest to the water. Enjoy!

Radisson Rewards e-mail: “Enjoy your new, simplified Award Chart”

Thanks, the new simplicity is really worth the increase in points for redemptions! #Blessed
