The HfP chat thread – Friday 18th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

second batch of Wimbledon tickets released. No code this time, just need to be a registered user of myWimbledon.

    • SteveJ says:

How do you show a negative lateral flow test? Doubt they want us taking along the home test kit thing to show it to them!?

      • Kevin C says:

If you register your test result with the NHS you get sent a text.

        • Tracey says:

Though it is a self declared result.
Nothing is ideal, but asking people to take their tests along may be an improvement.
Though given the results are obtained so quickly, asking random people to retest on site maybe a good idea. At least it may encourage some people to test in advance.

        • SteveJ says:

Thanks Kevin, never even knew that was a thing!

        • C says:

Except that the QR code on the last NHS self test kit i used returned a dead link.

          • Peter K says:

            Is this a joke?
You go on the gov website to register the result and the QR code is literally only the test number, not a link to anything else. If you’ve used one before surely you’d know that.

Managed to get mine yesterday with the code. Super exciting!

Any good points/churning/MS opportunities for Spanish citizens? Having recently naturalised and now a dual citizen (based in UK) I’m keen to see what new frontiers open for credit cards, loopholes, etc.

I’ll be traveling to Spain soon as well, so any further non-remote tips also appreciated!

    Thanks!

    • Doreen says:

Spanish resident here – I feel jealous at times hearing of all the offers on UK cards. My Spanish Amex Plat got me 300€ back on spend in El Corte Ingles (was a pleasant surprise on buying new iPhone!) and a sub to a Wine Club supposedly worth 159€.

      • Doreen says:

We’re probably too late, but if Rob would facilitate a referral, Tobias, I would get a €200 credit for dining in a Michelin restaurant! Different kinds of offers over here 😁

        • Gtellez says:

You have the IB Icon too, that is a visa and the signing bonus is up to 20k avios (there are several milestones to get the full 20k but not difficult) with no fee the first year (90 euros after). If you want it I could provide a referral link (that would give me 9k avios). Then you have the Melia credit card (Amex, low fee and 35k Melia points) and another one for Renfe (trains, don’t know exactly how it works). I had an Air europa credit card a couple of years ago too, but not sure if they still offer it (was quite good, visa, signing bonus something like 16k points after 3 transactions and no annual fee). That is pretty much every you can get other than Amex Gold and Platinum.

      • TOBIAS L says:

Thanks for your reply Doreen. I had a quick look at the Amex Plat Spain website and I cannot blame you for being jealous of the UK offers…the market there doesn’t seem great at all. I have a UK Plat anyway so wouldn’t have gone down this route.

A question for you (and anyone else): are there any equivalent Fintechs that are easy to register for and present opportunities a la Revolut here in UK? I know Revolut also operates in Spain but maybe there are other avenues for MS which aren’t typically discussed here.

        Thanks again

        • Doreen says:

Can’t help you, I’m afraid Tobias – Oldie here who has never manufactured spend, not even once (hangs head in shame!)

        • Gtellez says:

Until the end of last year Revolut top ups with IB Icon, however not anymore. IB doesn’t charge any fee for doing it, but doesn’t give you avios neither. Anything else up to my knowledge…

        • Marcus says:

I can help with referrals for a German AMEX cards if anyone is interested. There are currently very high sign up bonuses e.g. for the Gold Card.

Leonardo Hotel Bristol Glassfield, voucher on travelzoo. First impressions of the hotel are really good, no teething problem yet. Overall great value. Full price would have been over double for a standard room, and the voucher gets a support room

    • WaynedP says:

VS Flying Club offering 5 airmiles per £1 spent with TravelZoo until 30 June 2021 (usually 4 per £) on hotel stays booked directly with http://www.travelzoo.com/uk, excl any form of travel or international holidays.

Has anyone had experience in changing SQ flights under their book with confidence policy? If the same cabin class is available are they charging a fare difference?

    • meta says:

I only have experience with reward bookings, but they are very helpful and answer the phone quickly. They will also advise you of the best option. The agents really want to help customers get the best outcome and are consistently knowledgeable.

    • Sam G says:

the policy is (like most airlines) to charge fare difference , which is a big issue when buying a biz ticket as it could be huge! agree with @meta their call centre agents are very helpful but they’re also very by the book IME.

  • Tarmohamed says:

Sainsburys self checkouts to start accepting the new £50 when it is released.

    • John says:

Interesting but given the scan as you go is so much faster I will find somewhere else to spend my cash
