The HfP chat thread – Friday 25th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Virgin Credit Card Voucher Question – apologies if this has been done to death but a site search didn’t seem to locate the answer.

My husband and I are currently sitting on about 6 VS vouchers and struggling to see how we will be able to utilise them (and dont even start me on the tortuous effort required to work out expiry dates !) .

I know they cant (unfortunately) be used on partners so DL/AF/KL are out of the question.

Does the voucher holder have to travel? Could I for example apply it to a cash booking for my brother? Any tips appreciated.

    • MCO says:

I don’t believe the card holder has to travel. So yeah you could apply it to someone else’s booking.

    • Gary says:

If used as companion voucher, the cardholder needs to travel. If used as upgrade voucher then no, and can be utilised for cash bookings. VA Whats app service would happily update you number of vouchers left with corresponding expiry dates.

  • Paul Pogba says:

Not travel related but does anyone have any experience of setting up SEPA-Lastschriftmandat (Direct Debit) for a Euro payment on a UK account, does the account need to be Euro or can you set it up on a Sterling denominated one?

  • Roberto says:

Health Secretary Hancock shagging around, beach parties and cocktails for the elites at the G7, rules on isolating changed to allow 1000s of VIPs to descend on the Euro 2020 final.

All of this happening whilst the plebs are told there’s a deadly virus running amok.

    • bafan says:

Quite. They still have defenders on here too. The mind boggles.

      • Anna says:

I’ve not read anyone defending any of that!

      • HH says:

This week, 85k new cases / 1.5k hospital admissions / 100 deaths. Until the second dose rollout is done, it very much is running amok. The real problem is not differentiating rules for fully vaccinated people because of the “optics”.

        • Simon says:

Out of interest, do you consider other causes of death are running amok? Heart disease, cancer, pneumonia, dementia, suicide etc etc??

          • Anna says:

Even the WHO has criticised the U.K. for counting “dying with Covid” rather “dying from” and says it is skewing our figures to make them look worse than they actually are.

          • HH says:

None of those are contagious diseases, and none of those are spreading exponentially through our population (doubling every 11 days per last week’s REACT-1)…

          • Simon says:

Uni students and school kids being overly tested causing a spike in numbers??? With no uptick in “deaths” from these “cases”. Do you think we should ban cigarettes, alcohol and all processed food, as they all cause an undeniable increase in death rates?

          • Anuj says:

The diseases you mentioned are not contagious though so it’s just whataboutism really

          • Chris Heyes says:

Simon Of cause we should, cigarettes and Alcohol are the biggest causes of death either directly or indirectly
Should have been banned years ago

          • Simon says:

No personal choice at all Chris? Or personal responsibility ??

        • TGLoyalty says:

That’s 1500 in hospital TOTAL however long they’ve been in and even if they caught it in hospital while there fire something else.

It’s not running amok at all

    • Aston100 says:

Blame those who voted Tory and continue to do so despite all the shenanigans.

      • HH says:

@Simon the 7-day death rate has almost doubled in the last month (but remains low thanks to how many vulnerable people are now fully vaccinated). Back to my point, especially now with the delta variant there’s a wide gulf between single and double dose protection. The law needs to keep up in recognising that (‘follow the science’ as they love to say) and give more freedom to the fully vaccinated—even if it’s unpopular with everyone who isn’t yet.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Why are you even trying to defend this behaviour? Just give up and move on

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

My mistake thought you were replying to someone else and trying to defend his behaviour

        • Simon says:

The smaller the base number, the worse any % increase will look…… I’m not sure double jabbed need any more freedom than others though. With the vulnerable all safely double jabbed, i dont see any need for restrictions, or this insane amount of testing anymore…… Imagine going to the doctor for a flu test in 2019, with no symptoms. Youd be told to eff off….. Uni’s and Schools have always been breeding grounds for infectious viruses. We never used to test each kid and send the whole class home!?

    • Andrew says:

Ooh, is there a shag tape?

Anyone spot that The Sun have published close-up pics of the wedding ring as well as the Hancock’s house and car keys?

Wouldn’t take much effort to get a set cut from the pics. I hope Mrs H is changing the locks right now.

  • MCO says:

The NCP app has some decent rates compared top their website but I can’t figure out a way to pre-book a stay. Anyone know if it’s possible via the app? Can’t get through to NCP.

  • Matthew says:

Last gasp request to the kind HfP community! My 6yr old daughter needs about 10 more likes to be in the prizes for her Octopus Energy song she wrote herself. If you have a moment, she’d be very grateful if you could like it on Youtube please. Thank you everyone and to those who have already voted. Deadline is 8pm today.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Good luck. Guessing 100 is the magic number so 7 more needed.

And to the scourge who gave it the thumbs down…shame on you.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Obviously I meant Scrooge 🤦🏽‍♂️ iPhone autocorrect is getting worse

        • Chris says:

Added another one so just 2 to go

I think you may have been right the first time though TG, they sound the scourge of society

    • Tocsin says:

      Done 🙂

(and ditto to the comment by @TGLoyalty)

    • Craig says:

    • Degsy says:

      Done – just 3 to go…. 🤞🏽

    • SimonP says:

Liked – and actually I really did – what a great kid!!

    • AJA says:

    • trader363 says:

      Done – good luck!

    • Matthew says:

Wow this is amazing!! Thank you everyone. Hopefully she will get a prize 👍. Not checked the other kids videos today but this will definitely push her up. You are all so kind 🙏

      • Matthew says:

Update – just checked and looks like the other kids have had a final push too. She’s sitting on 124 votes and 4th is now 179 :-(. Thanks everyone who has helped though – it made her day after school when I said she had over 100 likes. Seeing the genuine joy on her face today is worth more than any prize 🙂

    • Phil says:

      Which heartless barsteward disliked it?

  • Catman99 says:

Beardie question…..If I pay for something that is going to attract a cash advance fee, when does the fee appear – straight away or at the end of the month?

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

When I did a test Che top up a while ago from my Beardie the 5% cash advance fee popped up next day value 😛

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

PS expect any interest however would be charged on the monthly statement date (not sure because I always clear the balance straight away so no interest accrues…)

      • Catman99 says:

Thanks I have done a small test transaction and will see how it goes.

  • Anthony says:

What are the chances of BA or Easyjet adding more flights to Mallorca for next week? they can’t complain about not being able to fly and then don’t add flights when there is high demand.

    • bafan says:

They need time to market and sell the flights, get aircraft ready, give crews rosters etc. It’s not as simple as that.

      • Aaron C says:

Not exactly a great look if they don’t operate as much as they can as quickly as they can. There’s a huge amount of public sympathy for travel at the moment but it’ll be lost if they drag their feet in getting as many people to those greens as they possibly can.
Eg as of yesterday BA only had 4x a week to Malta. Needs to be daily at least.

    • Richie says:

Some have been added for Friday

      • Anthony says:

BA haven’t added any for next Friday, still just 3 at £494 one way, EasyJet have no flights going Friday.

      • Richie says:

        might have been MAH

    • Rich says:

This is where the Ops people earn their money. “Yes boss, I can have 20 planes and crews ready in 24h, and another 20 in 48h”

The demand is there. I was really impressed by how agile Jet2 were last summer – opening new routes with multiple frequencies at the drop of a hat.

    • Birdy says:

We are going to Palma next Saturday which we booked in early May, and BA have cancelled and moved our flights twice. The most recent cancellation was only last week. It looks like a flight from LCY has been added (reinstated?)

      • Sam G says:

They do seem a bit quicker at adding the LCY flights but last year (& with Portugal this year) BA were pretty quick to add out of Heathrow as well

  • bafan says:

I looked up ARN-CHQ via either HEL or LHR and BA it was 16k Avios when I added the two legs together. I’ve calculated that correct, right? And £50. If I use AA miles it’s 12.5k miles and $33. Am I making a mistake or is AA just better value because it’s a connecting itinerary?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Can’t comment if you’ve added it up correctly but just a quick Google and Norwegian are flying that route

      • bafan says:

Yes! But they land at crazy hours on the midweek routes. I have zero desire to land at CHQ at 00:45 or 02:10. Only Saturdays seem to be sane.
