No1 Lounges sold to Aspire and Collinson – they will rejoin Priority Pass

As we predicted a couple of weeks ago, No1 Lounges has been sold to a joint venture of Collinson (owners of Priority Pass and 50% owner of Club Aspire lounges), via its Airport Dimensions subsidiary, and Swissport (owners of Aspire lounges and 50% owner of Club Aspire lounges).

The deal includes the nine remaining No1 Lounges sites, covering London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Birmingham.

The sites in Luton and Edinburgh have closed permanently.

No1 Lounges sold to Aspire and Collinson

No1 Lounges undertook a CVA process at the end of the last year to free itself from onerous leases. The Australian arm of No1 Lounges was sold two weeks ago which only left the UK sites.

It appears, at the moment, that the No1 Lounge and Clubrooms brands will be retained. The My Lounge brand looks as if it will disappear, as No1 had already planned, with the two Gatwick sites reopening under a new name.

Whilst it isn’t clear, it seems that No1 will operate independently from Swissport and Collinson. The press release implies that CEO John Upton will remain, at least for now.

One positive move for HfP readers is that No1 Lounges will return to Priority Pass, which is owned by Collinson.

No1 Lounges sold to Aspire and Collinson

For Collinson, acquiring No1 Lounges is about far more than making money from the lounges themselves.

With the UK Plaza Premium lounges pulling out of Priority Pass on Wednesday and No1 Lounges having pulled out last year, there was a big risk that UK financial institutions would drop Priority Pass.

After Plaza Premium withdrew, No1 became a ‘must have’ if Collinson wanted to retain momentum for Priority Pass and Lounge Key with American Express, HSBC and other partners.

This move is a blow for Plaza Premium and DragonPass. Acquiring No1 – or at least seeing it kept away from Collinson and Priority Pass – would have been a key driver in expanding DragonPass’s penetration with UK banks and credit cards.

  • Nigel W says:

Shame about the Luton one looks like it will remain shut. The Aspire lounge there can get busy quite easily (well pre-covid) so have another (and nicer) option was handy.

    • Rob says:

Someone may pick it up. Money has already been spent on fitting it out, getting all the necessary authorisations etc. It’s possible Aspire is waiting for the airport to agree a suitable deal.

    • Thywillbedone says:

At least the Aspire lounge offers excellent views over the main departure area to watch fist-fighting Wizzair customers…

  • Mark says:

Does this change anything for Lounge Key/HSBC WEMC?

  • sigma421 says:

Shame about Edinburgh. The new Aspire was nice but No. 1 was always a tad better IMO. Wonder if someone else might take it, at least in the medium term? Hard to think of anyone obvious though unless Plaza Premium fancy a go – or the airport fancies operating the lounge itself.

    • Andrew says:

Is the No1 unit bigger than the current BA lounge?

I rarely bothered going into the BA lounge, there was hardly any daylight, it looked over the car park, was the opposite end to gates for LHR flights and it was generally more peaceful just killing time around gates 13-16.

      • David D says:

Aspire could expand into the space quite easily, or rebrand the space as a Club Aspire. BA may consider moving into the space, though unlikely, unless Edinburgh Airport look to make further changes to their airside layout in the future.

        • sigma421 says:

It’s definitely smaller than the BA space (although maybe similar to what they had before they moved into bmi’s old lounge). I could just about see the airport wanting the space back as it does make for quite a tight corner and would probably do well as retail but who knows!

      • sigma421 says:

Yes the BA lounge is where the BD one used to be

  • ankomonkey says:

I’m hoping the arrogance and superiority feelings that No.1 had exuded in recent years will now disappear. I always thought they acted like they really were something special, when they weren’t.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

No1 lounges are style over substance. Glorified waiting rooms with cake and coffee and one sub par hot item.

Plaza Premium lounges are far superior.

      • ankomonkey says:

        +1 Lord D

      • Tom says:

To be fair, I’d say ‘glorified waiting room’ describes 90%+ of lounges globally other than the few that have e.g. a proper restaurant inside them!

  • Peggerz says:

Sorry to hear about Edinburgh No.1 going, best lounge at the airport. I suppose the Qatar flights will have to use the BA lounge now. Where will the Emirates pax go once they return?
Whilst we speculate who may take over this lounge, would it be a great cost for the Airport itself to do so? I seem to recall that Manchester runs/used to run the 1903 Lounge which I was impressed with.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

Qatar Airways passengers at EDI would have always been able to use the BA lounge I would have thought.

    • sigma421 says:

Manchester Airport runs both Escape and 1903 which, despite all my other issues with MAG, are pretty good lounges on the whole. Would be interesting to see if they go for a premium product – after GLA opened Lomond.

      • Oh! Matron! says:

I’ve spent many an afternoon working from Escape at MAN. Used to love watching planes land whilst on conf calls.

        • sigma421 says:

Was a big fan of the T3 lounge – used to be through more or less weekly and got to know the team pretty well. Was also handy for getting in with a Priority Pass when the lounge was ‘full’. Hope the team has made it out the other side of this.

  • PATRICK PURCELL says:

Is Stansted back in Priority Pass? Will there be any Luton option for Priority Pass holders?

    • Rob says:

The No1 Lounge at Stansted closed many years ago. The Escape lounge takes Priority Pass.

The Aspire lounge at Luton accepts Priority Pass and has just been refurbished – haven’t seen it yet.

  • r* says:

Hopefully they no longer hide the tub of nuts if you dare ask for some before 1pm lol

  • Chris Heyes says:

Well Rob, This must surly mean a total review from scratch of the “Best” and “Worst” maybe not immediately but when everything as settled down
