The HfP chat thread – Saturday 17th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Every forum has their synonymous characters. Be that those who haven’t quite cottoned on to the effects of a worldwide pandemic, cancel copious amounts of bookings as a result and then feel the need to share the experience. Right down to those who feel the need to moan about it. Surely it’s this kind of banter that draws us here to post just as much as it is the timely Nutmeg promos that lure us in day after day?

  • Harry T says:

But does Che work with Solihull?!?!

    • J says:

And what’s Rob doing with his Virgin points? 😂

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Or what does the kettle cost in the latest hotel reviewed?

        • Harry T says:

I haven’t even got a kettle at the Barcelona EDITION!!! Complaining to the manager as we speak 😂

Most people travel without insurance, based on most surveys done on this subject (not me, I have travel insurance). No idea what it’s like now but I can’t imagine most 18-30 year olds who’ll be going on holiday to Ibiza etc will have insurance

So I just wanted to report back after I asked the question last week about a Revolute transfer involving the sale of one of my cars.
I got about 15 replies some of them questioning my intelligence, some of them a little derogatory, all of them extremely pessimistic and none of which helped me anyway at all in answering my original question.
But the sale went through fine the money was transferred as a faster payment and I have a very happy customer who lives in France and now owns a a lovely BMW 650ci.

Head for Points… where people all talk like they are multi millionaires but fight like Wildebeest on the Serengeti over 80 Nectar points.

      • Mikeact says:

Multi millionaires probably drink champagne every day and scatter £50 notes down the Kings Road, or so I am led to believe.

    • Andrew says:

Blimey – everyone’s got out the wrong side of bed this morning!

      • Princess says:

Wow! what’s happening today? why people can’t just laugh sometimes!!!!! There are always so many useful comment in this chat!

      • Dave1985 says:

Everyone is looking forward to “freedom day” 🤣

        • Mikeact says:

I think that’s fair. In fact I’ve been pulled up myself for ‘assuming ‘ better well off people drink champagne every day and throw £50 notes around … something I never suggested in a million years.

          • Dave1985 says:

Good point. Wasting hours penny pinching when you don’t need to seems like a waste of time. Especially given that pubs opened three months ago and there’s better things to do.

          • Lord Doncaster says:

I was stuck behind an idiot builder trying to exchange some tatty £50 notes at the post office that were at least 20 years out of date…bet he found them under the floorboards.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

To be fair, if there were enough of them, why wouldn’t you give it a crack 😀

          • Lady London says:

Your builder needs to take them to the Bank of England Lord Doncaster … in less than £10k chunks if he’s got sense

        • Tony1 says:

Freedom day … OH though that Mr Cummings had been imprisoned by the PM lol

    • Phil W says:

I saw your post and was deeply suspicious about the buyer. However, was struggling to see the risk if he was intending to transfer you the money and immediately after it cleared you moved it to another account.
But the responses to your post put me off responding tbh.

      • Mark says:

Thanks Phil and I agree it’s something I won’t do again.
There is a few people on here who comment mainly to feed their own ego rather than actually trying to help the person who wants the information.

  • Sam says:

From San Sebastián to Biarritz and Saint-Jean de Luz, are there border crossings / immigration?

    • Michael C says:

No, Sam – in fact, if you go on the smaller roads, you won’t even realise you’re in France until the shop names start changing!

      • Andrew says:

They never really change these days.

I was at a meeting in La Rochelle shortly before Covid. The company we were visiting organised lunch. I was quite looking forward to it. Something fresh from the bakery perhaps?

        Nope, Subway platter.

      • Tony1 says:

+1 You “may” see the old customs post if it has not been removed

    • Mike says:

Sam – under current circumstances just remember to declare you have been in France on return to uk as there are now different self isolation rules for France

    • cinereus says:

      Of course there are not.

      • Mike says:

Cinereus – oh I would definitely check. Front page of Telegraph announces new quarantine rules for travellers from France

        • I read the question says:

I think Cinereus was referring to the immigration/border checks

  • Vin says:

Data point – don’t know if it’s been mentioned on here before.
I was able to use a BA FTV (2-4-1) to make a T-355 booking to HND.
Took 2 calls (for the outbound and inbound) and plenty of patient explaining but end result achieved. Waited 2 min for the first call to be answered (India) and 20min for the second (UK) – worked out ok by law of averages 🙂

  • Mouse says:

Re Waddle’s question last night on yesterday’s chat about making an avios booking to travel with a friend on their F&F list and how to avoid BA emailing the friend about it. Isn’t the way to do this to enter the friend’s name etc manually rather than choosing them from the drop down, and not giving their exec club number or correct email? So to BA it is just a random name and not your friend.

    • AndyW says:

I have done exactly this before for a booking with my wife I didn’t want her to know about (after messing up previously and booking and it getting linked to her BA account).

      • Yuff says:

Or just have access to her email account, if they are anything like my wife she never reads her email, it’s a job to get her to answer her phone sometimes 🤣🤣🤣

    • Jo says:

In my case, because I have a household account, my companion on the 241 voucher also had to be in the HHA so all her details were included automatically. Would need to get rid of the HHA and follow your advice next time. Thanks!
