The HfP chat thread – Monday 2nd August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does TAP/Star Alliance gold allow for a guest entering their lounges?
    Thanks

    • Liam says:

Yes. (I don’t know whether they have to be on the same flight as you or just flying on any Star Alliance flight on the same day.)

  • Simon says:

Boris Johnson has abandoned plans to create a new watchlist for international travel after a revolt by Cabinet ministers and Tory MPs………….. Boom !!

    • Rhys says:

Don’t count your chickens just yet….it’s not official until it’s official…

      • Simon says:

It wasnt official yet, so is it officially unofficial !??! I have faith when it is in the Times though.

      • r* says:

Its not official until they have leaked it to their favorite newspaper, thats how the govt announce things now isnt it? 🙂

    • Joe says:

I actually think this would have been a good idea. If there were 5 countries on the “amber watchlist” (i.e. risk of going red), it would increase confidence in booking for any other 130 ish countries on amber (i.e. amber but NOT at risk of going red)?!

      • Simon says:

Ha. Or take that one stage further and just book a green country for maximum confidence….

      • TGLoyalty says:

Not if the 5 countries are the ones where most brits visit every summer.

  • JohnT says:

BA news – partner American Airlines will now depart from LHR Terminal 3, and not LHR Terminal 5 for our flight on 23Sep.

    • ChrisC says:

Change apparently happens tomorriow. No lounge though.

Important to note that JFK flights will remain at LHR T5.

  • FlyingChris says:

Not sure I’ve seen this mentioned but quite good x15 Nectar earning offer available at Europcar. 15 Nectar points per £ for bookings made until August 11th for collection until October time. Have to book via the special page, but seems to combine with the 10%+ Privilege Club discount if signed in. If cost competitive and works for you – potentially a nice bonus 1500 Nectar (or 937 Avios) per £100 rental. Also seem to get a targeted 1,000 Nectar bonus at Esso after the rental apparently. https://www.europcar.co.uk/nectar15bonus

    • EwanG says:

Currently 10% funds return with Europcar on mbna smart rewards too, potentially also on other card equivalents (but not currently on my Halifax account)

      • FlyingChris says:

Good spot – 6% on my Virgin Atlantic CC with Virgin Money’s scheme. Also various £10-£30 off coupons around the web that seem to stack. Gets the price down pretty low for a UK rental at the moment.

Pondering a late October/early November holiday, but not sure where might be best, weather-wise. Palma, Faro or Pula? I know none of them are going to be hot, but as long as it’s warmer than the UK, I don’t really mind. I swam in sea in Norfolk at the weekend, so apparently I’m pretty tough! haha

I think jabbed Brits are allowed in Croatia now? Although I’m not 100% sure.

    • Joe says:

Any Brits are allowed in Croatia – as long as you test negative before you fly.

    • Richie says:

Palma, lots to do if it’s not sunny.

    • Gavin says:

I was in Palma mid-November 2019 and it was hot by UK standards! Sunny and around mid to high 20s. Not sure if that’s common or not. The sea wasn’t warm, but it was similar to Southern UK summer sea temperatures.

    • dk says:

Pula in late October early November is so out of season, I really don’t know what one could do there at that time of the year. It is like going skiing when there is no snow on the mountain. 🙂 but that’s just me. I lived on Croatian coast for over 30 years.

  • Chris says:

oops, was just trying to help out, didn’t realise I’d be creating a problem. Rhys please remove if inappropriate

  • Yuff says:

BA plane at Guernsey airport today, when we landed, haven’t seen that for many years

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

We have new BA routes to LCY & EDI Yuff – very exciting for us island bumpkins 😉
PS Hope you have a great stay on the rock !

  • Harley says:

Thinking of getting a lateral flow test at LHR tomorrow lunchtime, this would be for use on my return to the UK on Friday. My return flight leaves at 6pm though so would be over the 3 day by a matter of hours ( gov website suggests 3 days prior to departing flight which would be 6pm Tomorrow) do we think this will be a problem? Any experiences?

    • TGLoyalty says:

It is clearly just 3 Calendar days not 72 hours (clear example on gov.uk too) but check in the other side might be dim and deny you boarding.

Where are you going? Get one at the airport when you arrive before heading to your hotel?

      • Harley says:

Malaga: the Malaga airport ones seem to be for departures only albeit fully booked too and didnt want to risk a local one

        • TGLoyalty says:

You have a departure … 3 days later.

Not sure of the risk as long as the cert looks official and has a credible testing centre who is going to get into the ins and outs of its acceptable or not?
