We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just for clarity: £400 for a Sainsburys in-store gift card is acceptable spend on Sainsburys nectar card for the signup bonus ?

  • Jimc says:

Amex Plat Business points bonus: I’m about to apply for a business plat. Thought i’d ask here first if there are any lesser known offers or referrals that would give more than the standard 40k MR points sign up bonus?

This is where I had a reply from, not sure if it accept replies but worth a try

We want to get a bit of a sunshine holiday but as the wife is pregnant we aren’t going to fly anywhere. Likely going early September. Have an 18 month who will be coming too.

Looked at ferry to northern Spain eg Plymouth to Santander but works out at about a grand and not very clued up on whether the area will suit – likely will if sun, beer, nice food and beaches though.

Any other suggestions of either how to get ferry cheaper or alternative options. Ferries to northern France I would guess are much less likely to deliver the sunshine.

    Thanks in advance

    • QwertyKnowsBest says:

Used Brittany Ferries to Spain many times. If you can spare the time and enjoy the journey it works. Northern Spain is interesting but I think you need to be prepared to drive and move around. It’s more of a touring holiday.

If you are up for the drive (on empty good roads) to Portugal and Southern Spain, then that opens up many sun holiday possibilities.

    • Tony1 says:

It will be “cold” in September. Take the AP2 down all the way- prob 3 or 4 h and then the AP7 down south. Take a break at Tarragona ( on the coast but a port – but nice full of Roman stuff – Check out Portavebtuara at Reus – then head to Valencia and further ) fuel much cheaper than UK and tolls seem to be in process of being removed

      • Anna says:

I’ve visited family in Galicia many times in September and always had glorious weather – wouldn’t drive there though as per the comment below!

      • TGLoyalty says:

Valencia had lovely weather in September when I visited. Great city too

        • BrotherBear says:

          Thanks all.

We’d only be able to go for circa a week due to work so not sure we’d drive away from the north coast albeit happy to travel around up there.

Starting to think closer to home would be much less hassle without flying anywhere.

    • Anna says:

What’s the issue with flying, is it the lack of social distancing? That much driving and a notoriously rough ferry crossing would my idea of purgatory with a toddler! Also you’d be in a right mess if Spain went on the red list, which can’t be completely ruled out.

      • TGLoyalty says:

It can be ruled out capacity for c1k a day into the U.K. hotel quarantine system. It would be easily 10x that from Spain.

      • BrotherBear says:

Not the social distancing (flew to Portugal in June) but wife doesn’t want to fly whilst pregnant.

        Noted re the rough crossing.

    • Craig says:

Have a look at Benodet, we had some great family holidays there. Yes the weather might not be as good as the Med but the rest is great fun. Ferry to Cherbourg and then drive.

      • JDB says:

Yes, south Brittany sounds a much better bet than the long and costly ferry to Spain + lots of additional driving. We have been to the north and south of Brittany many times in September and more often than not the weather is good and whatever, there are great beaches and good food.

Don’t know if mentioned before (too busy in the last two days to go through all the emails). Today I found a really nice offer on my Marriott account, get two night certificates of up to 35k points each for just two stays (one certificate per stay). On my partners account, stay twice get 22.5k points (7.5k after first stay, 15k after the second one). I’m titanium and my partner platinum. So really worth it to check your Marriott accounts! It worths really good for me as I already had 3 stays booked for the next month (I’ll move one of them to my partner account now).

    • Aliyah says:

      Was it on the app?

    • Tariq says:

Promo appeared in my a/c too today. Double points for any stays that include a Fri or Sat night for the next 3 months.

  • Jimmy says:

Anyone know how good virgin are at credit limit increases? Had card for two years. Ask for a credit limit on August 2020 after year 1 but I’m coming up to year two now so wonder if it’s worth asking for another. Anybody with experience?

    • Stephen says:

Yes good experience with asking them on the phone, decision within a few minutes

      • Jimmy says:

Thanks – will wait until end of aug – so that will be full year – always paid off on time – but abs been running to the limit every single month.
Think I would prefer online check as I dont fancy a manual check of my transactions!

        • Travel Strong says:

No need to wait for the full year. You can get one every 6 months (up to 25k… not heard of more than that yet).

          • Jimmy says:

Ah thanks! Will do that then! 🙂 les just hope Aug 5th isn’t that painful!

    • John says:

Have had same £25000 limit since card was launched. Frequently use limit and pay off every month.
      Consistently refused limit increase.

    • Nick says:

Definitely do it, you (at least were) are able to request online. Nothing to lose by asking.

  • Stephen says:

Anyone know how strict AMEX Platinum criteria is for applying? Is there any income requirements?

    • Peter K says:

No specific criteria like it used to specify (£40k household income IIRC), but there will be some criteria and they do ask for your income and also your household income as part of the application.

      • Stephen says:

Thanks, had anyone been successful as their first credit card with limited credit history?

        • Babyg says:

You be better off following the HFP articles on how to maximize your signup bonuses and start with another card first (e.g. Marriott which has a 40k sign up bonus currently) …

    • Rob says:

      No income requirements any longer.

  • Rash says:

Hi, can I buy third party gift vouchers from Argos using my nectar points? For example Next gift vouchers or a Netflix voucher?
