The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 4th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Virgin Atlantic Fee Paying card, are there any terms which prevent using the card for large business transactions?

  • Anuj says:

Just bought an apple store gift card on cardyard, I know some others use it on here. Any idea how long for it to change from “Awaiting payment confirmation” to giving me the e code? Is this something that only occurs during working hours? Thanks

    • Ryan says:

Used them once and it took a working day for it to come through

I did panic because I thought it would be instant but their customer service was dry quick to access and were helpful

Chronomics – Does using a BA booking ref actually link the test to that specific journey? Or its in place to help ensure the discount is provided to BA passengers? i.e. Can I use what I buy for another journey?

    • BP says:

Try it out with an old booking ref…

      • YC says:

        🙂

        • meta says:

It does, but doesn’t recognise outbound. I am currently disputing it with them as they are sending it to me while I am already away.

It now costs more too. Still the cheapest at £22+

          • YC says:

What do u mean by doesn’t recognise outbound? e.g. It does not fulfil other countries entry requirements?

Is it safe to purchase to use for any pre-departure journey back to UK?

          • meta says:

If you input your BA PNR for a return flight, it will send the test while you’re away because their system doesn’t recognise the fact you’re away! You basically can’t take it with you.

SO why keep Turkey on the red list ? does not seem to have any logic. Is the PM trying again for his trade deal visit ?

  • Sam G says:

Along with UAE Qatar off red list but Mexico on

    • Anna says:

Farcical that you can fly to the US from Mexico but not from the U.K.!

    • Anna says:

Spain remaining Amber but government “advising” people to have PCR tests prior to returning. Maybe if the ones back home weren’t such a rip off, Boris!

Hotel quarantine going up to £2250.

      • Tony1 says:

So what test do you need (legally) to fly back from Spain at the moment ? I take it the PCR is just non legal advice.

      • James K says:

Another great example of poor comms by the government. What does ‘advised’ actually mean? We fly back from Spain on Sunday – have our Qured lateral flow tests with us, but will they be accepted or not?

        • Anna says:

I’m assuming the government doesn’t want to evoke the wrath of all the people who have now purchased Day 2 tests from its approved suppliers so PCR tests are not a legal requirement at this time!

          • Anna says:

We’ll be getting 29 euro antigen tests as planned next week, we’re doing LFTs every few days and mainly staying in our family bubble – I think this is enough. Only one of the 4 of us is unvaccinated and not actually had Covid recently.

          • Tony1 says:

You seem to be more likely to be pinged from the plane than anything else from this chat today. Fly Safe.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Advised means f all from a legal perspective

  • Degsy says:

    T -1hr….

  • VickyTM says:

I’ve been looking through the old chat threads, but can’t quite find what I’m looking for despite @Lady London always giving a thoroughly detailed response to people, so I apologise in advance as I suspect this has been covered multiple times…
I’m due to fly to MEX next week on a cash ticket with an Avios upgrade to Club. (if that makes a difference). I strongly suspect the flight will be cancelled, however I still need to get there on the same day. I understand that BA are obligated to put me onto another airline, but if they are difficult about it, do I just book myself onto a different airline and claim it back? Is there a limit to the cost I should bear in mind, as long as the ticket is comparable? Is there anything else I should be aware of? (Yes I know it’s a red country, but I’ll be flying home from USA).
Just trying to get my ducks in a row as much as possible.
    Thanks in advance
