We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi. Couple of Virgin queries. Booked a flight with virgin a month ago through eDreams. I put my virgin flying club number in on the eDreams website. I haven’t been credited any miles for this flight. Yet when I go to claim missing miles it wants a 13 digit ticket number which I don;t have. Does not booking with virgin mean I won’t get the miles?
    2. I’m considering buying virgin points with the current bonus offer on. But as I haven’t flown at all with them on my virgin account a message pops up
“Before you can Buy Miles, you must have made at least one Flying Club Earning or Spending transaction.” Any ideas on how i can get round that. (although perhaps if I can get the miles for the above flight credited this won’t be an issue).

    • Mark says:

Just seen that their is an option if you don’t have your ticket number to fill out a contact form. Yet it still requires my ticket number????

    • chabuddy geezy says:

You still get miles if you do not book direct.

      • ChrisC says:

Except if it’s not in the right fare bucket such as from consolidator tickers and agencies like e-dreams don’t always sell the right inventory

MArk – check all your emails from both edreams and virgin. Also it’s possible the ticket number will be on your credit card statement. VS tickets start with 932-

And never discard BPs until points have posted!

Hold onto your boarding passes while sorting this out.

      • Mark says:

Sadly the boarding pass are long gone. This flight was almost 2 months ago

  • Harley says:

Was offered a retention offer of an extra avios pp for bapp a month ago. They said it would last for 3 months. Does anyone know if i downgraded to ba blue card soon i would continue getting the extra point ?

Need advice please. Not fully vaccinated yet until Sept, but will be going to France from Latvia next week. I will be spending around 48hrs in Nice and then will head to London, so wondering if I can use the same PCR test (leaving Latvia and then leaving France in 48 hrs) ? Many thanks in advance.

    • Pete M says:

I doubt the timings will work out on that, because there will be a lag between when you actually take the test before leaving Latvia and receiving the results and going to France. Lateral flow in France before heading to the UK probably a safer bet.

      • Daniel says:

Thank you Pete. But theoretically it’s possible to visit a few countries with the same PCR within 72hrs, correct? I couldn’t find any information stating “only local PCRs are accepted” etc

  • Shaun says:

Hi, just finished my copy of Belkin’s Mileage Maniac. Still in great condition so if anyone is after a copy and wouldn’t mind making a small donation to charity I would be happy to send it on.

    • Bobby says:

I’d be interested please Shaun, which charity would you like a donation to go to? if no one else has beaten me to it 🙂

Currently in the Hard rock hotel on the anniversary rate. Superior room, directly above / in front of Marble Arch and the Park. Great service too – fruit and chocs in the room for sons birthday. V pleased and may stay again despite no (real) points angle

  • HBommie says:

SLH bookings, will I receive World of Hyatt points via an SLH booking?

  • AnotherUser says:

Sorry – got a couple of daft Covid travel questions. I’ll need a lateral flow test before flying from Spain to Scotland. Can this just be a test kit that meets the sensitivity/specificity requirements of the Scottish Government (including DIY tests like Chronomics where you upload the result) or am I better getting one done by a professional in Spain to reduce the odds of Ryanair refusing boarding? Tests can be had cheap-ish in Spain, so it’s more about what’s the easier/more reliable option than price.

Scottish Government still insists that the Day 2 test on return is done by CTM. No reason not to wait till shortly before I fly to order this? Hoping the government might allow other companies to by user before I travel.

    • Patrycja says:

We flew from Spain to Edinburgh last month with Ryanair. Used Qured for pre-departure and had no issues with it being accepted. I ordered day 2 tests through CTM and because it was a weekend, we did not get an instant confirmation. When we called they told us it could take up to 3 days for confirmation email to arrive. Given you need the reference for PLF, I would order it a few days prior to departure.

    • Pete M says:

Sadly you’re completely at the whim of the FR check-in person. I’ve not had any issues with these tests across 10+ flights this year with BA, but have heard several reports of people I’ve recommended them to who’ve either had to argue or were denied boarding when flying FR. There is nothing wrong with the tests and certificates, certain agents simply convince themselves they don’t like them for the most spurious reasons, like not having stamps on them…

      • AnotherUser says:

Thanks. I’ll make sure to order the CTM tests a week in advance. The Scottish Government page is a bit ambiguous – talks about the testing company collecting or receiving the test sample ( so I might spend a few £s more to get an in-person test done. Ryanair gate staff aren’t always the most sympathetic!

        • AnotherUser says:

Anyway, it seems ridiculous that decisions about test documents are being made at the airport. Would make much more sense to have the option to upload docs in advance for approval or rejection

        • Gtellez says:

I don’t know about Ryanair, but I flew from BCN to EDI with VY last week and used project screen by prenetics (£26 with Virgin code) and no problem at all. Custom agents were asking for CTM booking confirmation at passport control, so use that even being more expensive.

  • GoodExperience says:

Charlie, I can obtain an exemption for self-quarantine due to visiting family. Harry T, are you sure as from what I read, the uk is classified as a very high risk country outside the EU, therefore requiring a negative Covid test prior to entry. Thanks LS, I will check that out.

    • Harry T says:

Yes, UK required a test, according to latest guidance and quarantine upon arrival. I hadn’t looked into travelling directly from the UK, as I will be entering from France and will not have visited a very high risk country in the ten days before, so will be exempt from testing and quarantine requirements.
