Virgin Atlantic launching flights to Barbados and Florida from Edinburgh

Virgin Atlantic has just announced that it will be launching its first-ever international flights from Edinburgh Airport this winter.

(You may remember that Virgin briefly operated ‘Little Red’ domestic services between London and Edinburgh, which is why it can’t call the new flights its debut at the Scottish airport.)

Where will Virgin Atlantic fly from Edinburgh?

Virgin will launch direct flights to Barbados and offer the only direct flights between Scotland and the Caribbean. The flights will launch on the 5th December and will operate twice weekly. We don’t know the timings yet but they will depart on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Virgin Atlantic

Flights will be bookable from the 18th August and lead-in prices start at £419 return in economy.

The flights will be operated by the A330 fleet, so you won’t be getting the newest Upper Class Suite currently found on the A350s. These aircraft have 31 seats in Upper Class, 48 Premium and 185 economy and are the smallest aircraft in Virgin’s fleet. (The ex-Air Berlin A330-200s are due to be retired by early 2022).

In the Spring the route will be joined by flights to Orlando, Florida, also from Edinburgh. These are due to begin in April.

Further Caribbean expansion

Edinburgh isn’t the only airport getting a boost. Virgin Atlantic is also launching flights from Manchester to Montego Bay (Jamaica) from 6th November and is returning to St Lucia from Heathrow on 18th December.

As previously announced Virgin will also increase flights to Barbados by 70% across the board, with eleven weekly flights from Heathrow and five from Manchester this winter. It will also launch flights to The Bahamas – tickets for which are now on sale.

Extreme nitpick (because thats what the internet does!) – that picture of the A330 Upper Class suite is of the “Dream Suite” when they went 1-2-1. That seat was removed some years back and is not on any of the 14 A330s VS have.

    • Babyg says:

I was thinking the same thing…. basically you really want to get an “A” upperclass seat as this is so much more private than the uppperclass G and K seats that you seem to be looking at everybody else (and then lots of rows of feet/socks)… if i get do manage to get seats in the A row i actually like the old style seats over the new ones, the buddy dinning option is still great IMHO.

    • Mark says:

Since we’re nitpicking… 🙂 “These aircraft have 31 seats in Upper Class, 48 Premium and 185 economy and are the smallest aircraft in Virgin’s fleet” isn’t really true even ignoring the A330-200. The 787-9 is pretty much identical in size (wider and slightly shorter) and VS has the same number of total seats, albeit fewer Premium and more Economy.

    • Mark says:

Continuing that theme of nitpicking, these are also not the “only direct flights between Scotland and the Caribbean.”

Tui operate several routes – a swear word around these parts, I know, but still…

  • Alex W says:

Will the fees/charges be cheaper than flying from London?

  • ChrisA says:

Where are all the men in the photo?

    • SteveW says:

Unfair, I know him and he’s married (to a woman).

      • ChrisA says:

Oh Steve I wasn’t commenting on the gentleman actually in the photo – meant to remark on the imbalance!

  • Sammyj says:

I thought this was great news, until I read that all they’ve done is move the GLA flight to MCO to EDI instead – looks like there’s no real benefit here (unless of course you live closer to EDI than GLA!)

    • 1ATL says:

GLA and EDI Airports are 48 miles apart, in the grand scheme of things it’s going to be adding an hour to some people’s journey to/from the airport and a lot less than that or even reducing the journey time in many cases. It’s on par with BA moving LGW services to LHR.

  • Rui N. says:

Has anyone managed to get an increase in the credit limit on a Creation card using the online form? How much did you request and what justification did you use? (“Easier MS” is not listed unfortunately)
I tried for £3k yesterday and the “other” option and no luck.
