The HfP chat thread – Friday 20th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Posted very late last night so will repeat again now for the benefit of wider readership. LNER has a sale on that might be of use to some. Details are on their homepage.

    • Jonathan says:

Make sure you repost on pages 5, 7 & 9 today as well in case anyone misses it 😉

  • DZOO says:

On the off chance (as discussed from time to time in past), any Donald Russell codes floating about? TIA

    • Tony1 says:

Register with an alternative e mail, and refer yourself ?

      • Travel Strong says:

Indeed. Use a new email and NEWCUST10
Combines with the amex £10 off offer too.
And with other rebate portals on top.

        • Travel Strong says:

Just to clarify – NEWCUST10 is £10 off, so better than referring yourself for 10% off (unless you are spending over £100) and better than the emailed “£6 off £60” 10% offers!

    • WaynedP says:

I had success recently with either STEAK10 or SUMMER10, can’t remember which.

Unexpected 10% off when I thought the code had long expired, so may be dead by now.

    • Lady London says:

Lakeland sent out an offer on Donald Russell a week or two if anyone wants to open that channel because I would expect it to recur (I’d share the code but I binned it !)

  • Charlie T. says:

So I’m looking at going to Crete in Summer term half term next year. The sensibly timed flights on both BA and Easyjet from LON-HER are eyewateringly expensive – in the region of £1k+ return in the back of the plane. I get that this is mega-peak but are they really expecting to fill aircraft at those sorts of prices, or is it reasonable to expect prices to drop? This is the first year of my kids being tied to term dates so I have no real idea of what the school holiday premium level should be!

    • Richie says:

Demand is also higher because of an additional bank holiday for HM’s celebrations.

    • Sam G says:

Easyjet flights are probably quite full of people who got a free rebook from this year – I got peak flights x 2 this way for peanuts. I think they’ll come down a bit (no one is realistically going to pay that !) but it’s still going to be a pricey time to travel

      • Anna says:

I did that – got AGP for £40 each then moved them to Feb half term, lots of us were doing that earlier this year!

    • Toby says:

Our BA flights to Crete this September/October we’re cancelled and thus we can now choose any date onwards. It might be worth trying that approach with the hope they also cancel yours.

On the other hand, I’ve been monitoring some BA prices and they’re yo-yoing up and down so if you want a straightforward booking maybe set up a price monitor on Google flights and see if it dips?

      • Eoc says:

Be a little wary of this tactic. My flight to HER last week was pretty full. At the new Hilton Royal Senses ( which is an excellent stopover) and it’s full of Brits. Right now Crete flights may not be cancelled that much. Just saying.

    • Anna says:

Even with school holiday premium that’s expensive! I imagine BA are anticipating a lot of pent up demand next year and they may be correct. I would personally find some avios seats to any acceptable destination at this stage (if there are any left) and wait and see if cash prices come down.

I took the long view and booked flights to Malaga and Oporto for next year when EJ prices were rock bottom in the spring. Not planning to travel at May/June half term though as we will be mid- GCSE’s!

    • Harry T says:

Flights at peak times are always going to be expensive this far out. Will probably drop in price at about three months out. Your best bet is to monitor Avios availability if you are happy flying on BA.

    • Paul says:

Go via Athens and either fly or sail. Prices won’t drop

    • Charlie T. says:

Thanks all for your thoughts. Most helpful.

  • Fm says:

Visiting London in a few weeks, have got 500 golden circle points orphaned in 2 accounts (250 each) – is there any way of using these at the Shard for dinner?

    • Benilyn says:

Can use at the Shangri-La restaurants. If you ask nicely they may be able to split the bill to use points from both accounts.

      • Munch says:

They split the bill last week at the Gong bar so I could use the points from two accounts.

  • H says:

Hi. Has anyone returned from Dubai recently using the £22 Chronomics antigen test? I’m keen to know of any issues… thanks

    • Mrs_Fussy says:

H – what code are you using to get £22 for Chronimics. It does not seem to accept my BA Booking reference. Re Dubai, there discussion around it last week but best call Emirates https://www.emirates.com/uk/english/help/covid-19/dubai-travel-requirements/tourists/
      (Tourists departing from Dubai
Passengers will need to do COVID‑19 PCR tests only if it is mandated by the country they are travelling to.
Please check the requirements of the country you are travelling to. The travel regulations change frequently. You may need to take a COVID‑19 PCR test before you depart or another particular type of COVID‑19 test specified by your destination)

  • Peggerz says:

Good morning. I’m staying at the Hilton London Bridge over the weekend.
Can anyone recommend a decent curry house in the vicinity? And also best places for – reasonably priced – eating in/around Borough market. Prefer Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/Korean types of foods.
    Thanks.

    • Alex J says:

In terms of Mediterrean, Shrigley’s Moroccan nearby is great, and in the market itself Nana Fanny’s does great falafel. Can also recommend the place that does the duck confit wraps, they are incredible.

    • MIchael C says:

For aperitivos, the market itself has an excellent (cheap!) Oyster stand next to a great Argentinian empanada place.

    • Mouse says:

Curry – worth walking over either London Bridge to Brigadiers or Tower Bridge to Gunpowder. Indian Gourmet on Borough High Street is a bit more down to earth but still pretty good.

Tas on Borough High Street is good for Turkish food.

    • jj says:

If you can get in (pre-pandemic the queues were daunting), Padella near Borough Market is cheap and fantastic for pasta. Not posh, but the food is amazing.

    • Red Flyer says:

10 mins in an Uber will get you to Brick Lane for plenty of decent curry options. Did exactly this a few years back.
Flat Iron Square also a good nearby option for decent Med grub.

    • Peggerz says:

      Thanks for everyone’s suggestions.

  • Benilyn says:

Following up from yesterday, did transfer from (new) MR account to Emirates Skywards. Usually goes through immediately, but has not done so, I sent it yesterday and still not posted. Anyone posted MR to Skywards recently?

    • KBuffett says:

I think there is a delay if you hadn’t already linked your MR account with Skywards.

  • GaryE says:

Have an IHG free night, following 2 stays, is there any quick way to find out which hotels and dates this can be applied to, rather than trawling through every hotel we might be interested in? I realise that it has a limit of up to 40,000 points per night hotel – but have tried a few hotels and cannot see the ‘free night’ option appear on the drop down list for booking. Thanks

    • Harry T says:

Dynamic pricing has made booking reward nights completely unpredictable, I’m afraid. There’s no easy way to filter 🥺

    • Anna says:

Better searching by location, hotels which you can use the offer for will appear in the list of results.
