We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

    Remind me, All4One gift cards, they can be added to platforms like Virgin Shop away? And does Virgin Shop Away stack with Airtime Rewards?

      Ode(Spree) cards are rejected by Airtime.

      I’ve not tried with Virgin shop away but had not success using them anywhere other than the affiliated retailers. I have tried airtime Rewards, Revolut, Starling, Ernie (you never know) and probably some other places.

        I think you can ‘cash’ them out via BACS into your bank for a £7.50 fee per card. I’m sure trying to cash out thousands of pounds worth will raise laundry issues.

    Am I the only person who detests interconnecting doors at hotels when you’re not looking to have another room next door to yours? It always baffles me why hotels put solo travellers or couples in rooms with interconnecting doors. Hearing everything that happens in the room next to me isn’t my definition of luxury, even if the noise isn’t the seedier type.

      Yes, I wish that Hilton had offered the option to not have an interconnecting door rather than selecting one!

      It is possible to have double interconnecting doors that are soundproof- not installing those is the biggest crime!

        Fair point, Colin! I still think interconnecting doors should be largely purged from hotels.

          As long as they are, as Colin suggests double/well sound proofed, I am afraid HarryT that they are brilliant for parents with children old enough to sleep on their own, but young enough that you want them very close. For what I think you meant by “seedier” reasons, it’s delightfully preferable for the parents and probably more fun for the children as well, plus two bathrooms.

            I can understand how they are attractive to parents. But I think they are a feature that can have a disproportionately negative impact on a large amount of travellers who aren’t with a young family.

            +1 especially in airport hotels where people have super early flights and slam the door at 4am, or at midnight if you are the one with the early flight.

            That was why the old-style Palace Hotels were so nice. 2 doors between the room and the corridor often making a little vestibule and keeping other people’s door slams, corridor traffic and any trolley noise (luggage, cleaning, room service) out.

            Slam the doors and shout their conversations as they wheel their squeaky luggage to the lift! After having put on their TV really loud when they woke up if they’re in the room next to you, of course.

            Reminds me of a time I complained about some ppl doing this at a Hilton as the doors didn’t have quiet closers, ended up getting the top suite for the remainder of the stay 🙂

      When discovering them on arrival just pick up the phone and ask them to reallocate your room, but check it’s not a suite first! Some hotels repurpose interconnecting rooms as suites.

        Yes, BJ, it looks like my suite is made up of two interconnecting rooms, both of which have interconnecting doors to the rooms next to them. Unfortunately the hotel is actually sold out!

      Yes, I hate interconnecting rooms, not just for the noise but for security reasons too. Many have flimsy locks which can be opened with a coin from the other room.

      A well installed and soundproof-insulated two-doors interconnecting door is just as soundproof as a wall, so not an issue.
      But yes, the single flimsy wooden door (usually with a gap at the bottom to avoid affecting the carpet) between two rooms is useless.
      So the issue is not the presence of an interconnecting door, but cheap/bad installation. No different to the flimsy walls like paper found in cheap box hotels really.

        I’ve honestly not really seen a properly sound insulated connecting door, except perhaps at the very new Hampton in Stockton. I think this is one area where the new hotels really shine.

    Called the regular BA line to change my booking and couldn’t get through (just hung up on me), then I finally looked for the Silver line and got through in about five minutes. Good stuff.

    What is the next logical step for player 2 to max sign up bonuses for someone currently holds AmEx Gold Charge? Can I refer them for anything (I hold Platinum Charge)

      I believe if they hold the Gold charge card they are only eligible for the sign up bonus on the BAPP (worth double checking Rob’s article). You may want to wait to refer them for that, as Rhett have been hints the SUB will be increased in September.

    I should be visiting Denmark soon and they offer free Lateral Flow tests even for foreigners as well as issuing EU Digital Covid Pass confirming negative result. Can I use this in lieu of buying a rapid test (e.g. from Qured) to return to the UK? Thanks 🙂

      Yes you can use any provider for your pre-departure test.

      @manilabay I am currently in Copenhagen.
      Free testing for everyone and some sites issue a travel certificate, was in and out in four minutes today.
      Don’t need to book.
      I had registered with the official site but didn’t need to. They took a picture of my passport.
      Gave details how to access the PDF of result for travel.
      Brilliant.
      I believe the airport will charge you so get done in town.

    On going saga of my cancelled Denver trip. Originally F, downgraded to CW, then cancelled last week by BA. Phoned twice. Latest is no way to book a year out. ( should fly 6/9/21, but system doesn’t show Sept next year) . As of today, BA calendar shows 19 Aug 2022 as t-355. Therefore CS agent on YouFirst tells me the best she can do is book outbound beginning of Aug and inbound 19 August 2022. She did say ‘they’ were looking into it as a lot of folk were unhappy at not being able to book as per 8 July memo, and advised me to phone again in a couple of days. Should I not be able to get through to CS by the time I should have flown next week, ( domestic leg before Denver leg) then we are classed as a no show and lose the lot. Dear God! Why can’t BA just preserve the ticket until the required dates become in range? I don’t want a FTV or a refund. I want my trip next Sept!

      Do nothing, ensure all sectors cancelled and leave booking until all your planned sectors are in range then rebook. I have had exactly this dilemma for a trip to Asia that has just fully come into range. I will call in a day or two to rebook fully. Not all You First agents are knowledgable or particularly good. Some are excellent though just H.U.C.A

        Thanks. In MMB it’s identified ( red writing) that the LHR-DEN leg is cancelled, but not the INV-LHR, or the ORD -LHR-INV. However I do know that one leg cancelled by BA means the rest is likely useless and therefore whole ticket is cancelled. You’d think CS would be more clued up. I have HU and will CA!

      Not the only comment on it here Jill, others have too but I don’t recall a satisfactory outcome. In your situation I would book sonething in, there is a good chance that the schedule will change before August 22 but I guess there is no F at the moment.

        BJ, I may well resort to an earlier trip…several days to think about it. Don’t fancy the rigmarole of booking an open jaw 241 and clamouring for seats along with folk and their fancy latest 241 vouchers gained after Sept 21

          Unless I’m running a bit slow tonight and missing something then you shouldn’t need to, I think you can pick any available seat, not just those available for avios.

            Yes…I know. It’s just that should I end up with a return of my 241( hopefully not if I follow all advice / call CS again and stick to my guns!) that’s when I’d be faffing around for Avios seats along with those who get a different booking bucket with the new BAPP changes in Sept.

    Hi, I need to extend a companion voucher. I am just confirming I can book an arbitrary flight (Man-LHR return) use my voucher and then cancel after the 24hr cooling period? Anything else I need to do or any time window for the flight booking?
