Does using 2 x ‘new’ 241 BA Amex vouchers for a family of four still make sense?

One of the benefits of the 2-4-1 companion voucher that comes with the British Airways Premium Plus American Express card is that you can use two vouchers in the same booking for a family of four.

This may seen obvious, but it isn’t. Technically, the rules of the 2-4-1 voucher say that the cardholder must travel. This would block the use of two x 2-4-1 vouchers on the same booking, since the 2nd voucher would be used for two non-cardholders.

British Airways thought about this, however, and built in some flexibility.

British Airways BA Amex Premium Plus American Express

The flexibility is important because, with the Premium Plus American Express card, the voucher is valid for two years.

As you can earn one voucher per card year, it is very likely that you will have multiple vouchers in your account at some point.

Being able to use two vouchers at once for a family of four has, historically, been very handy. I have done it myself numerous times.

And yet ….

We wrote an article yesterday on how the new-style British Airways Premium Plus American Express card opens up a lot of extra Avios availability in Club World.

This is not marketing guff. The extra seats really are there.

A couple of people asked what happened if you tried to book for more than two people. We did some more experiments (thanks Mark) and the extra availability is still there. This means that, if you have a new style 2-4-1 voucher, you can book for more than two people and still get access to the extra Avios seats in Club World.

Does it now make sense to NOT use 2 x 241 BA Amex vouchers for a family of four?

This should make you question whether you should use 2 x 2-4-1 vouchers at once

On this basis, you should potentially think twice before using 2 x new-style 2-4-1 companion vouchers to book for a family of four.

If you use two vouchers in one booking, you won’t have a voucher left for your next booking – and this means no access to the extra Club World seats.

Of course, if you don’t earn enough Avios to just use 1 x 2-4-1 voucher when booking for a family of four, this isn’t an issue for you. Continue as you were, and use two vouchers per family booking.

For people who DO earn enough Avios, however, think about the following scenarios:

  • For Holiday 1, you use 2 x 241 vouchers to book for your family of four to Barbados, benefitting from the extra Avios availability
  • For Holiday 2, with no 241 vouchers left, you try to book for a family of four to San Francisco but cannot get seats due to not seeing the extra availability

Plan B seems better to me, if you have enough Avios coming in:

  • For Holiday 1, you use 1 x 241 voucher to book for your family of four to Barbados, benefitting from the extra Avios availability
  • For Holiday 2, you use 1 x 241 voucher to book for your family of four to San Francisco, benefitting from the extra Avios availability

Going forward, your 241 voucher from the Premium Plus card is a ‘joker’ which magically unlocks extra business class Avios seats. You may want to think twice about using two in the same booking.

  • Sammyj says:

How do I actually use 2 vouchers on one booking? Is ringing BA the only way, as I can’t see how to select more than one voucher? If so I’ll just stick to what we’ve done in the past and make 2 separate bookings for 2 on separate accounts.

    • Anna says:

You can only do it if you hold both vouchers.

      • LessCleverAndrew says:

What if you have two vouchers in the family account – you have 1 and your partner has 1. Can it be done over the phone?

    • Dave says:

If you click ‘redeen now’ on one of the vouchers, there is an option to select multiple vouchers later in the booking process.

      • Sammyj says:

        Thanks – I do have 2, both pre-Sept.
Is that much later on in the process, or where you select the voucher in the original search box on the Exec club home page? I’ve been trying and it only let me select one to search. Unless I’m being incredibly stupid, which is always a possibility.

  • Al C says:

I’ve just triggered the new voucher and the expiry date is stated as 7th March 2024 making it valid for 30 months not 24 months.

  • Mike P says:

I had spent more than £12K on the free card so upgraded on August 30th and had almost immediate confirmation that the upgrade had gone through. I’ve not received a voucher yet (either old or new), have received an old style card and have been charged the new £250 fee. All in all not very impressive.

  • Peter Taysum says:

I’ve got two “old” vouchers (with extended dates) and in the next couple of months will get my first new voucher (BAPP)

    1. Can I use two old vouchers for four people? It seems from above that’s always been the case (if I can find availability) That’s what I’m hoping to do; but it won’t open up availability as per new voucher?

    2. With new vouchers (if BA don’t change it) use one voucher and Avios for booking to gain extra access to CW for two+ people

    3. If First availability is there can use two old vouchers or two new vouchers but won’t open up any additional access in First from either voucher.

Does status open up more? When booking Avios flights; it often states “more opened up due to Gold”. But I think I’ve only seen that for CE rather than CW etc.

Thanks for any clarification. Head hurty time! Plus will read Rob’s article from yesterday as advised above. Thanks all!

    • memesweeper says:

      1. yes, and correct, no new availability
      2. yes
      3. correct

      • Peter Taysum says:

Thank you! Just when I think “I’m getting it” things change! 😊

Am seeing some NIce FIRST prices to SFO in March 2021, which would secure Gold again (with double TP and reduced TP requirement I think!) Thinking should I try for GGL; possibly the only time I could achieve it…

  • MarkS says:

I forgot to upgrade blue to premium and have now triggered the economy voucher. Wasted. Anyone have any luck getting this reversed?

    • Rob says:

      Very, very unlikely.

      • MarkS says:

Meh, thanks. My own fault, you had warned us! At least my next card year starts in a month and we’ve already got a couple of vouchers.

  • Andrew says:

    Very interesting article, thanks Rob.

The other angle to this is whether it’s worth redeeming Avios for flights at all, given they now have a very clear cost. With a family of 4 and two 241 vouchers the maths was pretty clearly in favour for Asia travel in J.

However, if you redeem part without the 241 you may find it’s cheaper (and lets be honest sometimes better) to pay cash for a non BA carrier like Qatar, Etihad ot Turkish.

    • Rob says:

Indeed. The 0.8p Nectar cash out value means you have to be more focused on when you use points.

  • Alan says:

The new voucher sounds like a good improvement for families/travelling groups of 3 too!
