The HfP chat thread – Thursday 9th September

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What’s everyone’s views on the Maldives coming off the red list by end of Jan?

Got the 120k/night rate booked at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi for 5 nights

    • Rhys says:

I think there will probably be a change to the system before then. Paul Charles certainly thinks so (although he has been wrong before, eg. about USA re-opening.)

Covid cases have stabilised in the Maldives anyway.

    • TGLoyalty says:

There’s no reason why the red list should even exist in its current form.

Let alone Maldives be on it.

    • Benilyn says:

Not sure you can read too much into it, but it has come off Dubai/Abu Dhabi’s red list recently.

    • Bob says:

they now have genome testing in place which they didn’t have before (which was an apparent cause of red list) so expectations of it coming off soon, hopefully this month.

Does anyone know which is the best place to park for free near LHR? I have an early flight so can’t really use tube, but noticed that Hounslow’s majority of streets are free to park:
Happy to get a bus/tube and walk a little.. and not worried about the car, as it’s old and rusty 😀

    • Scott says:

I just normally park in the Hounslow West tube station car park. £6.50 a day and free at weekends (avoiding the market area should that still be running).

Tube starts just before 6am usually, so not sure how early your flight is.

Would have thought it would be a bit of a walk to LHR from Hounslow, if possible, and not sure how much a taxi would cost. Buses, not sure about, but there must be some running all night / very early.

      • peter says:

7am, so will probably go for a night bus. As I’m coming from east – near Dartford, I once tried taking two night buses that took nearly 3h (mostly to remind myself what London looks at night :D) but once is enough!
Thanks, I will leave it somewhere near Hounslow West and then bus/tube/taxi from there.

        • Beardless Hipster says:

Bus 482 stops in front of the Tube station and N9 goes from the bus stop opposite. Journey time over 20 minutes though. Tube starts at 5:00 and takes 12 minutes

      • Jody says:

That’s a great tip, thank you!

      • Venturelog says:

Just be aware to use their NCP car park and not RingGo. Was caught out recently as their map showed that Hounslow West car park was available on the RingGo app

    • Ghosty says:

If your car is old and rusty just beware that someone may report it as abandoned 😊

      • peter says:

Not that rusty.. 😀 just rusty enough not to be afraid to park it on a local street (it won’t get stolen), some areas there don’t look very inviting and would never leave a normal car over night.

        • John says:

Cains Lane and walk to premier inn t4

          • peter says:

Thanks John, there’s a free bus from there so it seems like great location.

        • WaynedP says:

Beware if it’s got a catalytic converter. That’ll soon be eyed up by anyone happy to ignore the state of the visible rust.

        • Ghosty says:

If I were to put £50 worth of fuel in my car, it would double the value of the car. 🤣

  • YC says:

Is there a way of getting the BA site to price a OW airline flight? Or is this allowed only when there is a codeshare? Trying to use BA evouchers

    • Richie says:

      Try the multi-city tool.

    • ChrisC says:

      What’s the route?

    • AJA says:

It seems it’s not possible to do online. BA’s website defaults to BA only, even if you choose Wednesday when BA does not fly the route. You may be able to do it over the phone and they should waive the offline fee. Or forget using the BA voucher just book RJ instead and put in your BAEC FF number. Not only do you get the RJ 787 you also earn 140TP Avios for the flights each way instead of flying on BA’s inferior A320 and a mere 80TP for the privilege!

Well, with the German “quarantine for kids” option having scuppered my wonderful Hamburg miniature train plan fr Oct…child has now chosen (first-ever) Eurostar trip to Paris (despite being told to no avail it’s just a boring tunnel…)

-any recent experience of how-long-before to check in at either end?
-I know Amex plat only allows the holder (+ supp.) entry – anyone had any luck with kids being squeezed in in Paris?!

    • Rob says:

I’ve taken my kids into the Paris lounge. Always worth asking.

    • Hak says:

      Just been on Eurostar.

Departing London was easy. Got there about 2 hours prior to departure and all the border guard did was glance at both the covid certificate and the declaration of honor thing. No hassle at all in terms of queuing etc. Bit busy in the lounge and the waiting area about 30 minutes prior to departure.

Paris departure was more hectic. Everyone advised to get there 2 hours prior to departure so quite the scrum of people at the check in, covid checks etc. Took about 35 to 40 minutes to get through (business line did not seem to be any quicker as only two people were checking the three queues for the covid related stuff). Still, it was all okay for me but for older and disabled folk I can see how it would be somewhat annoying or difficult at the Paris end.

Curve is a total shambles. Got their card, bought some shares through crowdcube and was upgraded to metal with curve-fronted on. Used the card to buy a few thousand premium bonds as well as using for normal purchases linked to my capital on tap card. Weeks later receive random email saying because I have purchased premium bonds my card ‘remains blocked’. Have tried contacting them for 3 weeks now. Not one response despite Metal holders supposedly benefitting from increased customer service. Regret ever investing in them as they are clearly not going to survice at this rate.

    • Peter says:

Same for me, 3 weeks now. Made a complaint about their slow customer service and was awarded FIVE POUNDS compensation! But card is still blocked..

    • JDB says:

Curve and other EMIs are all under the spotlight at the moment…a few unhappy customers is the least of their problems.

    • BP says:

Got the same requesting source of funds documentation. Sent it off but got nothing back. Card remains active.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Hfp community thanks you for funding their activity…

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Is he counting on the gift cards being converted to real sales?

  • Dave says:

Has anyone upgraded from the free BA card to BAPP since the changes came in? Close to the £10k threshold and wondering if it is still relatively seamless to trigger the companion voucher.
