News in brief:

500,000 British Airways seats for under £40

As part of its current sale, British Airways is offering some special fares on short-haul routes this weekend.

Until Monday 13th, 500,000 seats to Europe have been reduced to £40 or less one-way.

The cheapest routes, with return trips possible for under £60, are Dublin, Bilbao and Gibraltar.

I recommend looking at the BA Low Fare Finder page. This will let you see exactly which months have the lowest fares.

Full details of this offer and the broader BA sale are here. The main sale runs until 21st September although this 500,000 seats offer ends on the 13th.

World of Hyatt and American Airlines promotion

Get 1,000 American Airlines miles with every Hyatt stay – stacks with points

American Airlines has a ‘strategic partnership’ with the Hyatt hotel group. As part of this, it has launched a new offer.

It isn’t hugely generous BUT it is incremental. You will receive your usual World of Hyatt points anyway, so this is an extra cherry on top.

You will receive 1,000 American Airlines miles with every stay at 130 participating Hyatt hotels in Europe, Africa, Middle East and India before 19th December.

Whilst there is no list of participating hotels, I am guessing that 130 hotels would cover the entire portfolio in the areas listed above. Note that Small Luxury Hotels stays do not count.

You receive your 1,000 AA miles on top of either standard World of Hyatt points or, if you are earning American Airlines miles, your 500 base miles.

You will NOT receive the bonus if your Hyatt account is set to earn airline miles – instead of World of Hyatt points – in a scheme apart from American AAdvantage.

You can find out more, and register, on the Hyatt website here.

No doubt the half million BA sale fares will be for the benefit of those who live in London and the South East and not for the majority of the population who don’t.

    • Nicholas says:

BA has given up on the rest of the country, they kept cutting LBA flights (or altering the times) so that you couldn’t connect with flights at LHR, so most people stopped using the service allowing BA to say there was no demand. Almost as bad as Amex deals, which are 95% london based.

      • Briand says:

Easyjet or Ryanair give you fabulous destinations if you’re not in the SE catchment area, no problem at all.

      • Callum says:

If you genuinely believe that BA deliberately sabotaged a profitable route in order to “justify” (to who exactly?) removing it because they have an incomprehensible hatred of Leeds and the North….

        • bafan says:

Northerners always seem to be carrying a chip on their shoulder. They can’t admit that the money to sustain the fares on the routes just isn’t up there.

          • Rob says:

…. despite Manchester Airport opening a VIP terminal for the general public to pay to use?!

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Yes, if you live oop north check out Ryanair, great autumn prices( disclosure I have no connection to Michael O’Leary)

  • EDIflyer says:

The NH hotel in London does not take Amex, despite being listed as doing so.

    Dear EDIflyer,

Thank you for choosing NH London Kensington for your upcoming trip to London.

Please be informed, that we currently do not accept AMEX as method of payment.

We invite you to amend your details via the secure link sent in order to confirm your reservation.

In case you are referring to a booking made via an Amex promo offer, please speak to American Express directly as we are not able to process payments made via American Express cards.

    Best regards,

    • Rob says:

      What?!

      • EDIflyer says:

Yep, it allows you to make a booking on the website using Amex and then you get an email from the front desk with that advice. I called the hotel and they were adamant they wouldn’t take it so I took my business elsewhere…

      • Ryan Gill says:

Any cheap Melia points on the horizon? I would like to top my account up, after a great value recent Strand redemption.

        • Rob says:

See what Amazon is charging – try the U.K. and Spanish sites.

        • lgflyer says:

They are usually cheaper in Amazon.de/it
          299€ + delivery for 80.000 points or 140€ + delivery for 35.000 points.

    • Ambient says:

Stayed there last week and paid by Amex. The rate went non-refundable two days before arrival so my card was charged in advance. But the front desk at check in also had no issues putting a hold on the card in place to cover incidentals. Nonsense email therefore based on my experience.

      • Joe says:

I stayed at the Kensington property about 3 weeks ago and they sent me the email and would NOT accept my Amex at the front desk. Perhaps this was an IT glitch that they then fixed shortly after my stay. Very frustrating indeed. They did put me in the nicest room, though – a nice touch but I’d have preferred the £50 off.

  • RJA says:

Nice just re-booked an existing Meliá booking, got a better price and now get some additional avios – thanks Rob.

    • Erico1875 says:

Be aware that quite often you can save a lot of money at Melia by buying and then booking with points instead of cash
We bought points via a sale last year at £3.30 per 1000. Normally they are 5€ per thousand.
3 niights for this weekend in Newcastle were well over £600. I paid 101K points so roughly half price

  • Ryan Gill says:

I can’t see how to add Iberia as the preferred avios earn on the Melia site. I’m probably going to make a cash booking. Will app give me option to apply this after making booking.

    • RJA says:

With the “ My Profile” section, bottom left “Preferences for Obtaining”

    • RJA says:

Within the “ My Profile” section, bottom left “Preferences for Obtaining”

    • Sukes says:

On the website I can add Iberia or other airlines under my profile / my information. If your Q regards selecting a preference of an airline over points, rather than adding an airline, then I haven’t attempted that. The iPhone app shows me the earning partner I chose via the website but I cannot edit it in the app.

  • ChrisC says:

These BA fares in the flash sale are HBO fares so status bag allowances won’t apply.
