Your Hilton status has been extended to 2022 – plus qualification levels cut and elite nights rolled

Hilton Honors has made a major announcement this afternoon about your status level for 2022.

This is important because, even if Hilton Honors is not your major programme, the other big chains are likely to take careful note of what Hilton is doing.

There are a lot of moving parts here to get your head around, but it is all very positive. In general, the 50% cut in targets for 2021 has become a 30% cut in targets for 2022, which feels fair.

You can find out more on hilton.com here – scroll down to the ‘Keep Your Status & Benefits through March 31, 2023’ link.

Your Hilton status has been extended to 2022

Your existing Hilton Honors status has been rolled over

Whatever level of Hilton Honors status you have, you will keep it for 2022.

Because of the three month stub period, you are guaranteed to keep your current level until 31st March 2023.

Your points won’t expire

All points expiry has been paused until 31st December 2022. To be honest, this was never a major problem with Hilton because any activity, not necessary a stay, was enough to keep your points alive.

It will be far easier to earn status in 2022

Hilton has reduced its status requirements for 2022 from its usual level. This will make it easier to retain your current level for 2023.

This is what you will need to earn in 2022 to gain or renew status:

  • Silver – seven nights, three stays or 17,500 base points
  • Gold – 28 nights, 14 stays or 52,500 base points
  • Diamond – 42 nights, 21 stays or 84,000 base points

This is roughly a 30% reduction on the usual levels.

Your Hilton status has been extended to 2022

Your 2021 nights will be rolled over

To make it even easier to get status in 2022, your elite nights from 2021 will be rolled over.

(For clarity, this excludes any nights rolled over from 2020. My Hilton account currently shows 62 nights, for example, but 60 of those were rolled over from 2020. I will only carry two nights into 2022.)

This means that if you have 42 elite nights in the bag by 31st December 2021, you will renew Diamond for 2023 automatically. This is because your 42 nights from 2021 will be carried over into 2022.

Stays do not rollover – only nights. This is a bit odd but Hilton did the same thing with 2021 extensions.

Milestone bonus targets

This is less important for most people, but the 2022 milestone bonus targets will be:

  • 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points at 30 nights
  • 10,000 bonus points fo every additional 10 nights after that
  • One-time 30,000 points bonus at 60 nights

Anyone with 40 nights can gift Gold status to a friend, which can be upgraded to Diamond status at 70 nights.

Conclusion

This is an impressive move by Hilton and will put pressure on Marriott, IHG and the other big chains to reciprocate.

The smart move is the rolling over of 2021 nights into 2022. This will encourage people to move their stays for the rest of 2021 to Hilton in the knowledge that they count for next year. In effect, Hilton is giving you 15 months to earn the nights required for 2023 status.

Let’s see what the competition does …..

Weirdly, my Hilton Honors monthly email statements have already been showing my diamond status as lasting through to March 2023 since January, and I didn’t do the 30 nights needed in 2020/21 – though I did do 29 across a handful of mattress runs (which now seems a waste but at least they were very cheap and got me some points) and I had planned to do the final night earlier this year, until I saw that my status had been extended anyway. I guess those 29 won’t now count towards 2023/4, what a shame 😉 Meanwhile the app still says I need to do one more night to retain Diamond… 🤷‍♂️ lol

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I never read those Hilton Honors monthly statement emails, mainly because they don’t include a monthly statement but mine also show March 2023

  • Can says:

Forgive me again, I am a new diamond, I am stuck with 84000 base points to requalify. Doesn’t that mean just a spending of $840 before taxes? What am I missing?

  • Rui N. says:

I thought that Hilton status was for life from the 1st year.

  • berneslai says:

Knackers. I’ve been sporadically booking day-rooms to hit the required 15 stays for the year. None of these will roll over and I’ve retained my status anyway. What a waste of money!

    • Rob says:

The day rooms earn night credit so they will roll over.

The only reason I have 62 nights is that I did 25+ day rooms last year when it was double elite credits.

      • berneslai says:

Thanks – just checked and you’re right. I might push a few more through to make qualification for next year easier

      • SwissJim says:

Ditto. 29 nights credit from admittedly very points cheap matress runs. B@gg$r….
But thought it might happen, and now means I don’t need to stay that one extra night this year to retain Diamond.!!

  • John says:

I’ll have 14 stays and 21 nights. I have a potential stay in November but was going to do a mattress run in case hotels get closed for leisure again, now I don’t have to. Will have the choice of 21 stays or 21 nights next year then

    • SwissJim says:

That’s not much of a choice is it? How do you plan doing 21 stays but not 21 nights? The two words “day rates” won’t work….

      • Chrisasaurus says:

You can do 21 nights but not 21 stays though…

        • Swiss Jim says:

Yeh, worked that one out for myself ! So only target is 21 nights….

          • John says:

“Choice” was a bad way of putting it, I just meant I don’t need to worry about how many nights each stay is any more.

  • marcw says:

How’s the “voucher $” trial going in lieu of free breakfast in the US? Any rumour it will be extended to next year / worldwide?

  • fivebobbill says:

Currently doing a Hilton tour of UAE at the minute as Diamond so this rollover bonus is great news! Conrad, Hilton Beach Resort RAK, and currently in Waldorf Astoria RAK, so not only am I getting great upgrades and service here and now, it all counts towards extending Diamond again!
And just to say Rob, I know from your review that you didn’t do so well when you stayed here at Waldorf RAK on your short visit, but I’m here on the 5 for 4 points deal, cheapest room, but have been given a Junior Suite Sea View Balcony half way up the main tower, AND given free breakfast throughout my stay!
And they even give you free ice lollies at the pool 🙂
BTW, thanks to Blenz and others for all the pre-trip hotel advice, having a ball 🥂👍

    • Rob says:

I am a bit fan of Waldorf RAK. It is Waldorf DXB which is more of an issue for upgrades.

If you get bored having a walk into the Ritz-Carlton resort on the sand spit at the end would be interesting. Not sure if you noticed but the mall up the road has a Pizza Express too if you get bored of hotel food 🙂

      • fivebobbill says:

Can see the RC from the balcony Rob, am on that corner and it’s easily recognised with their typical low-level layout, however walking anywhere during daylight hours just isn’t on, even along the beach. It’s 104 and you can practically drink the air down there! I might get the wife’s broad rimmed hat on and have a look tomorrow if there’s a breeze.
Just back from that Al Hamra mall by the way, easy 15 minute walk in the evening when it’s only around 88 degrees.
        Settled on Nandos 😉

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Still waiting for a status match, emailed them on the 2nd September. Anyone got any ideas how to get there challenge thing?

    • Peggerz says:

I did the status match earlier in the summer and it came thru within the week. Just showed up on the app. There was talk about a month ago about them closing the status match and that the webpage was unavailable, so congrats on submitting, but I’d say that a 2 week wait is a bit long.
I’ve been v well looked after at Hilton now I’m 💎 and I’ve put all my nights thru then recently. Happy with today’s news.

    • Richard says:

Me too, since August. Not even a rejection, and global customer services unresponsive. Have HH given up on status match?
