IHG is fixing the free night problem on the IHG Rewards Premium credit card

Here is an example of how commenting on HfP can (occasionally) get a problem solved.

A few days ago, multiple commented about problems with the free night voucher issued with the IHG Rewards Premium (‘black’) credit card.

This is an excellent credit card, possibly too good given that IHG and Creation, the issuer, pulled it from the market a couple of years ago.

For an annual fee of £99, you received:

  • 2 IHG Rewards points per £1 spent, which I’d value at 0.8p per £1 spent
  • Platinum Elite status in IHG Rewards
  • a free night voucher each year when you spend £10,000

It was a package we liked so much that it won an ‘Editor’s Choice’ prize at the 2019 Head for Points Travel & Loyalty Awards. I can only imagine that the card economics didn’t stack up, leading to it being withdrawn soon after.

The problem which emerged earlier this month was with the free night voucher.

The voucher came with a one year expiry date. This was always a ‘book by’ and not a ‘stay by’ expiry, so in reality you had almost two years to use it as long as you could make your booking within 12 months.

This is a change from how IHG credit card vouchers are issued in the United States. Over there, the vouchers come with a ‘stay by’ and NOT a ‘book by’ expiry date.

I contacted IHG and, whilst it was news to them, they agreed to take a look. Late last week I got a note saying:

“We have investigated the anniversary night booking query and have identified that certificates issued from April 2020 when we extended certificates to 18 months were deposited with book and stay by expiry date rules.

We will update all impacted active anniversary night certificates to remove the stay date rule and ensure that all certificates awarded going forward will not have the book and stay date rule.”

If you had trouble booking your free night in recent days, it will be hopefully be resolved soon.

Yes – thanks Rob – Good work :).

  • Phillip says:

Another thing that I came across recently from Creation was the following:

“With immediate effect we will be unable to process any transactions using your Curve Card where the transaction is allocated to your Creation issued credit card”

Am I the only one or just late noticing?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Just very late noticing.

    • ankomonkey says:

I wonder whether Rob could mention this point too and have Creation reverse this change. It seems unfair to apply such a mean restriction on good, honest customers such as those who read and post here.

      • Felix Flyer says:

+1 Am abroad and had several transactions declined by Creation limiting my options for the moment.

        • Rob says:

Given that Creation would have been doing £500k-£1m per week of Premium Bond transactions via Curve, I doubt they will be changing anything.

Remember that Creation loses roughly 0.5p for every £1 charged to the IHG Premium card (0.8p to buy two points minus 0.3p interchange).

Which IC hotel is it in the stock photo for the link to this article on the home page?

  • jil says:

on creation website, currently there’s only 1 credit card – free IHG card, are they quitting uk credit card market?

  • Scottydogg says:

Took me months of phone calls and emails to get them to actually credit me with the free night i had earned. Awful company Creation , i will never return . Bunch of liars

  • max28 says:

Thanks Rob ! Still cannot book a stay beyond the expiry date, but will undoubtedely take a few days to adjust in the system. Will report back if still not fixed in a couple of weeks.

  • Dan P says:

I was rejected for the free one which is hard to understand given credit record but maybe one of those thinkings. Maybe they are tightening up.

  • Richard C. says:

IHG have been saying this for 6 months, hence they removed the credit card free nights T&C’s.

Raised a complaint and IHG forced me to use these in the UK before the booking date expired or they would have be lost. At least I had some free nights away.

Have one free night left with booking date expiring 24th March 2022, which I’d like to use in the US end of March/April but still blocked due to IHG changing policy to the ‘use by’ date during Covid.

    • Sam says:

Sorry to say but IHG customer services are quite useless compared with other chains I have dealt with. When dealing with more complex issues there is no method of escalation so they are only trained to fob you off with the problem and force you to suffer from what is on there. In comparison, Hilton has a system where the agent can escalate the incident to higher level if it’s not resolved. I have a few of these incidents and they have been nicely dealt with after the escalation.
