Book NOW to avoid World of Hyatt ‘peak’ room pricing for 2022 stays

It was back in December 2019 that World of Hyatt announced that it was adding ‘peak’ and ‘off-peak’ pricing to its programme.

It was due to take effect in March 2020. You can guess how that went.

The revised implementation date was ‘mid-October 2021’ for stays from March 2022. This means that, if you want to avoid peak pricing, you should be locking in bookings now.

World of Hyatt to introduce peak and off-peak pricing

I should say upfront that Hyatt’s peak and off-peak pricing is not the end of the world and much of the value in the scheme will remain.  It’s only a shame that Hyatt points are so hard to earn if you are UK based, as they are not a transfer partner with any UK programme.

There are four things worth noting about the launch of peak pricing in March 2022:

• if you have an existing redemption booking which moves to off-peak, Hyatt will automatically refund the difference – this means that you shouldn’t worry about making World of Hyatt redemptions just because the price may fall

• peak and off-peak dates will be fixed.  This may sound logical (it is how BA Executive Club and Virgin Flying Club work) but Marriott Bonvoy took a different track, resetting peak and off-peak dates each month.  This means that you won’t need to continually recheck your booking to see if the price has moved down.

• peak and off-peak dates will be set by ‘geographic area’, and not on a hotel-by-hotel basis

• peak and off-peak pricing will also apply to suite and club lounge upgrades

What is the World of Hyatt peak and off-peak pricing chart?

The 40,000 points category is only used for partner hotels such as Small Luxury Hotels of the World.  For the core Hyatt estate, you won’t see the best Park Hyatt hotels moving more than 5,000 points, from 30,000 to 35,000.  Even then, this will only be on peak dates.

As I said, it could be worse.

Booking now is a one-way bet

If you have a stash of Hyatt points and are thinking of using them a trip beyond March 2022 – I’d like to finally take the Oman mountain trip I planned for October 2020 in October 2022 – you should lock in a booking now.

There is no downside:

• if you change your mind, you can cancel and get your points back

• if you end up booking for what becomes an off-peak date, Hyatt will automatically refund you the difference between the standard rate you paid and the off-peak rate

• if you end up booking for a peak date, you will have saved up to 5,000 World of Hyatt points per night
