Barbados scraps ‘on arrival’ PCR covid testing

I am writing this in a hotel room in Barbados, waiting for the results of the PCR tests we had to take on arrival on Wednesday.

Due to an ever increasing backlog, there is no certainty that they will be returned promptly. Our hotel emailed me on Monday offering to waive all cancellation fees if we decided not to come because of this, but with a nine night trip we were willing to risk having a couple of restricted days.

Our hotel plays fast and loose with the Government guidelines in any event. Whilst we are banned from the beach and will not get our room cleaned, we are not banned from any of the restaurants, the bars, the resort shops or the swimming pool!

Barbados scraps 'on arrival' PCR testing

The bigger problem is what happens if you test positive. To quote gov.uk:

“You will first be transferred to the government isolation facility …. Conditions at the government quarantine facilities are generally basic and not necessarily equivalent to a tourist hotel with the associated services … This may mean a mandatory stay of several weeks in Barbados.”

Oddly enough this has been putting some people off.

Barbados announced yesterday that the rules will change from Sunday. The negative PCR test taken in the UK – which all current arrivals have to show, on top of the test taken on landing – will now be enough. Fully vaccinated passengers and their children will no longer need to be restricted for 1-2 days of their holiday waiting for a test result and will no longer be at risk of de facto imprisonment for ‘several weeks’.

PS. This is a good time to remind you that the Aer Lingus services from Manchester to Barbados started on Wednesday. I saw the aircraft on the tarmac when I landed on the BA service. They will initially operate twice per week, increasing to three times a week as the season progresses. I am not sure how easy it is to find Avios redemptions, especially as BA Executive Club has better availability – but only discoverable via the call centre you can’t get through to – than avios.com.

You coulld have used the fast track testing service at the Crane in Barbados, results back in a few hours as they have their own lab. Are the restaurants and bars at your hotel closing in line with the 9pm curfew?

    • TGLoyalty says:

If they weren’t then probably not a good idea to advertise it on a travel blog …

  • Beardless Hipster says:

Aer Lingus emailed yesterday: To celebrate the launch of these new destinations (MAN-MCO, JFK, BGI), you’ll collect Double Avios on any of these routes when you book by 31 October 2021 for travel before 22 March 2022.

A short note on the AMEX lounge at Brighton: overall positive, surprisingly spacious, cash bar IIRC, and the ‘bowl food’ was surprising in terms of quality and quantity, much better fayre than what was served up on the pitch!
My guest and I were comped in via AMEX Plat. Whether there’s value in paying for access is entirely subjective.

    • Morgan says:

Was that this season? I’ve been trying to get a couple of freebie tickets via Amex Plat, as per prior seasons, but they don’t appear to have been released?

    • Paul says:

Yes I too had comp access and the experience was generally very positive. But I agree £350 + vat to £510 + vat for 2 makes it questionable value.

      • Phil says:

I agree with Paul’s comment – positive experience, when free – but hard to see the value at those prices.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the charging is in place – or additional to – the free places.

  • GaryE says:

How can you be certain that you would not be whisked off to Harrison Point – the rule regarding if someone near you has tested positive on the flight has not changed, nor has the curfew hours, and whilst the likelihood has dropped significantly there is still a risk especially with the low uptake of Bajans with the vaccination. As much as we desperately wanted to go, we have been every December for the last 20 years, bar 2020 – we decided to go somewhere closer to home.

    • Si says:

“the rule regarding if someone near you has tested positive on the flight has not changed” – surely it has indirectly – they won’t do a test when they land so you’d never find out?

      • GaryE says:

True – but, as currently if they test positive afterwards they will they ask date of arrival and airline etc so will be able to identify from flight records location of people sitting on the plane.

Jersey is also scraping PCR testing for fully vaccinated arrivals after 2nd November https://www.gov.je/Health/Coronavirus/Travel/Pages/TravelAfter2November.aspx

  • John T says:

Does Barbados still have the nightly curfew? That turns me right off.

    • Si says:

Yeh 9pm every night. Current legislation expires on Sunday so expect the next announcement this weekend. Numbers are rising but having watched how the process works all year I can see curfew being significantly eased next month, for peak season

  • Si says:

Are any other HfPers in Barbados at the moment? Rob would you be up for a quick HfP get-together / drink if I drop you an email?

  • Matt says:

In Barbados at the moment too. Our test last Sunday was done at our hotel around 2pm and returned by 10am following morning, the only restriction during that time was not being able to go to the beach or gym/spa facilities. The hotel is not affected by the night time curfew either so overall it has been way better than I thought

    • Rob says:

It seems that the tests for me and my daughter have been lost. No-one seems to know what to do now. Fun and games.

      • Si says:

Rob, book a PCR (not rapid) test for each of you at the Crane Resort (barbados covid lab dot com), take a quarantine-approved taxi there (I can give you a couple of numbers but your hotel can call one too), they have their own government approved lab on site, 99% of results are back within 4-5 hours.

        • Rob says:

Thanks. Still waiting for the Govt lab to come back with a final statement on whether they do have it.
