This is our review of the new club lounge at InterContinental Le Grand in Paris.

I have run it separately from our main review of InterContinental Paris Le Grand, partly for reasons of length and partly because it won’t interest anyone who doesn’t have lounge access.

The lounge has been transformed during the refurbishment. It has moved from a two level space on the 5th floor, with outstanding views of the Opera Garnier, to a first floor space on one level with no real views at all. How did I find it?

How do you access the club lounge at InterContinental Paris?

There are a number of ways of getting access.

  • The obvious one is to book a room which offers lounge access. You need to be careful here, because you can find rooms without club access being sold at a higher price, due to size or view, than those which do have it. Suites do not automatically come with club access, which is rare.
  • You can pay a supplement at check-in of €150 per day
  • You get automatic access if you have the invite-only InterContinental Royal Ambassador status
  • You book via a travel agent affiliated with the Virtuoso consortium (like our partner Emyr Thomas) who gets lounge access included for free for all his clients, irrespective of room booked. You pay the same as the Best Available Rate showing on the hotel website and will receive other benefits on top.

Why did people rate this lounge so highly?

Pre covid, this was my favourite club lounge anywhere in the world.

There was no standout reason for this, but everything worked. The staff were great. There was a huge amount of high quality food available all day, with free-flowing champagne from breakfast onwards. The upper level had plenty of quiet space to work or read, with amazing views. It was simply a very pleasant place to spend your time.

This has now changed.

The club lounge has moved to the first floor. If you know the hotel, you take the stairs opposite the lifts and it is right in front of you.

You can check in and check out here if you wish, although it is trickier than in the old lounge because the door requires a key card and you won’t have one if checking in ….

The view is poor. It overlooks the interior glazed courtyard:

The photo above is NOT the view you see though. The lounge is at the same level as the glass roof, which isn’t as impressive – you are looking into the side of the pyramid.

The lounge is now on one floor. It is basically ‘L’ shaped. There is a long and relatively narrow part, full of casual seating, which opens out into a more formal dining area where breakfast is served.

As you can see from the photographs here, a lot of money has been spent making the space look good, potentially to compensate for the loss of exterior views:

There are lots of little alcoves like this:

Regular visitors may recognise Gilles, a very long-standing staff member and someone who is hugely kind and helpful, in the background of this next picture – it is great that his job survived both covid and the hotel refurbishment:

Here’s the problem ….. no food

The new lounge has one key problem. When I visited, admittedly six weeks ago but I haven’t seen any reports of changes, there was basically no food available outside breakfast.

When I was there in the evening, there were just a couple of plates of canapes out. It was just enough to sustain you if you were on your way to dinner, but under no scenario could it sustain anyone who was spending the evening in.

If you’ve never visited the old lounge it’s hard to explain what a change this is. I have spent multiple days, over the years, working in the hotel and eating every single meal and snack in the lounge, and eating very well. That’s NOT happening now.

It isn’t clear how much of this is down to covid and/or the very low number of guests when I visited. I will need to visit again next year to see if things have improved.

Even breakfast is a shadow of its old self. Here are two shots of the buffet, although hot items are available to order too. Hot items generally arrived lukewarm, unfortunately – I got the impression that they are now cooked in the main restaurant and sent up, whereas the old lounge had its own cooking facilities.

The lack of goodies is a real issue. There is virtually no reason, frankly, to pay the €150 supplement for lounge access at present.

There also isn’t much reason to pay the premium for a room with club access, since the difference should also be around €150. The price is per room, so the maths changes a little if there are two of you, but even a couple aren’t going to get €150 of value from the breakfast, a couple of glasses of champagne and a handful of canapes.

Conclusion

I have spent many happy hours in the lounge at InterContinental Paris in the past, and it was a real shame to see the food service cut back so badly.

As with the other issues I had on my stay (bar closed, no food service in the lobby lounge, non-stop buskers playing outside my window) I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for now, and will pay another visit next year.

If things have not picked up, I may need to look for a new home in Paris after 20 years.

Had exactly the same experience last week at the InterContinental Athens. Paid for upgrade to club room but lounge closed, limited alternative offering in lobby bar (two small open sandwiches on a bridge roll!) . Spa shut, pool shut, restaurant shut on a Monday so only alternative was the lobby bar with limited dishes etc etc. I know they will blame Covid but in that case don’t charge a premium price. Sounds like this could be a Head Office guidance thing?

    • John says:

      Why did you pay?

    • Sam says:

I would certainly ask for refund and withdraw the club benefits as soon as I knew the lounge was shut, not to mention the sandwiches which you were not impressed about. A ‘club’ benefit without lounge access is not really a benefit.

    • Simonbr says:

To be fair to IC Athens, we stayed in a club room in September and they served very good food and champagne on the rooftop terrace between 6-8pm. Presumably the weather no longer allows this.

  • Geoggy says:

I wasn’t clear from the article if champagne is still available all day?

    • Rob says:

No, it wasn’t – unless there is some on request.

      • Lyn says:

I think it is now, just in a less obvious place, with the water and fruit juices rather than its old prominent spot next to the wine.

  • Chris says:

I hope the good days aren’t over. Giles has always looked after us and when we had a mini moon there, Giles really went the extra mile and gave us a bottle of Champagne most days for the room.

Rob is right, you really could live there for a day or even two.

    • Lyn says:

I wouldn’t count the good days as really over just yet. We also have especially fond memories of celebrating a round anniversary a few years ago and Gilles sending us upstairs to our favourite table in the old Club Lounge while he opened a special bottle of vintage champagne for us.

We stayed a couple of weeks ago for the first time since Covid and the hotel’s closure. Gilles and the Club Lounge staff were as kind and helpful as ever, and we really enjoyed our stay in our favourite room and also the time we spent in the lounge. And as Rob says, the location is superb. Perfect for walking and public transport, even buses, to almost everywhere.

Hopefully they will be able to gradually bring back some more of their staff and their food offerings. I don’t think Rob’s article mentioned afternoon tea. Perhaps this restarted after his stay? Again the finger sandwiches and small pastries were not as extensive a buffet as in the past, but they were still good.

This is a nightmare. I have spoken to my other half about how great this hotel is and have booked her a stay for her birthday. One of the key selling points was the lounge.

If this is the case, I will have to change my plans as the trip was primarily for the hotel rather than for Paris as it is somewhere we have both visited.

    • Genghis says:

It’s interesting how some people think. If I wanted to sit in a lounge all day with stuff free flowing I think I’d first go to Lidl and then sit in my own lounge. My son could even pour the drinks.

      • Sam says:

@Genghis It is the experience that matters. Clearly having your family pouring Lidl drinks is not the same experience as staying in a hotel with over 100 years of history with your partner. Following your Lidl logic I could as well suggest everyone there is no need to travel, just have a walk in the park near home if anyone wants to explore, you can even feed squirrels and geese there!

Hmm, there is no need to visit family and friends because you can do a zoom call and chat there.

And the list of analogy goes on…

        • Genghis says:

I completely agree: it’s the experience that you value that matters. Like I say, it’s interesting how some people think. I don’t really value sitting in a lounge eating and drinking all day long; I’d much rather be out and about. I don’t really value the quality of airport lounges that much – yes I use them with status or when included but wouldn’t pay extra for them – since in general, the food is never as good as what you’d otherwise get in the airport. Different strokes for different folks.

      • Erico1875 says:

Sounds like one of our Costa Del Sol holidays.
We take our own ice bucket to the beach. Stop off at Eroski or Mercadona on the way. 2 or 3 bottles of Cava and a couple of bags of ice for under €10, 2 comfy sunbeds and parasol for €12 and we are sorted for the day😁😁😁

    • Lyn says:

It doesn’t sound ideal in this case. Especially as you describe Paris as “somewhere we have both visited” rather than as somewhere you would both be delighted to visit again.

I think the food offerings in the Club Lounge will probably gradually be brought back, but the question is whether that will be in time for your OH’s birthday. If it is soon, then I would say no. Rob’s description was still a fair one two weeks ago except that afternoon tea is also available, and it looked as if champagne is probably available all day, if that makes a difference? If it is for later, perhaps it would be worth contacting the lounge to ask if they know of any plans for future changes?

We love the hotel, and probably use the Club Lounge much more than most as we tend to stay either right before or after a long haul flight and really value the ability to rest as much as we need to. But then we also like Paris and it’s art exhibitions and value the Le Grand location. I can’t imagine solemnly travelling to Paris, with all the current Covid restrictions, just to sit in the lounge at the moment.

  • D R G says:

I wonder if this is a common issue across all/most IC hotels at the moment. I’ve heard that the IC O2 lounge is still closed, as well as some other facilities. Anyone know if the lounge at IC PL is open? I was thinking of booking a trip to London soon, but my wife and I like to spend lots of time in the lounge, so won’t bother if not.

    • Yuff says:

I’ve booked Christmas at the IC park lane and added amabassdor lounge access package.

    • Chris says:

Lounge was open in October but breakfast was being served in Theo Randall’s. Didn’t access the lounge but enquired.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Thought the breakfast in Theo Randall was poor pre covid wonder how bad it is now.

  • Peter K says:

    Small typo:

“You need to be careful here, because you can find rooms without club access being sold at a higher price, due to size or view, than those which do not have it.”

Both options, as written here, do not have club access.

  • Red Flyer says:

Anyone been to IC Porto lately? Have an existing booking for 2-5 Jan 2022 but if not operating as expecting would rather try the new Hilton Tapestry instead, if open by then.

    • meta says:

IC Porto doesn’t have a lounge. They never had, but they will treat elites well. I got so much freebies the first time I went. The second time we stayed only 2×1 night, but were still treated well. Just beware that Porto in January is not pleasant for outdoor activities, so plan accordingly.

  • Nathan says:

Does anyone have experience of the lounge at IC Park Lane that they would be willing to share?

FYI – IC Ambassador free night voucher stay there this weekend, lounge appears to be open as normal i.e. no caveats offered in the email received, and access is charged £110/night on a per room basis.

As there will be 2 of us and breakfast is £32/head, I guess the additional question is one of can we drink £46 worth of bubbly in the evening session 🤔
