British Airways to launch flights to Indianapolis

It appears that British Airways is gearing up to launch flights to Indianapolis in Summer 2022.

As highlighted by @SeanM1997 on Twitter, BA has asked to reallocate Heathrow slots to allow an Indianapolis route from next Summer.

There are currently no flights from Indianapolis to Europe, although Delta ran a service to Paris pre-covid. This service was underwritten by a generous $5 million payment from the Indiana General Assembly and you are welcome to guess the answer to the question “What did British Airways find attractive about Indianapolis?”.

We will let you know if/when British Airways makes an official announcement.

PS. The same tweet also suggests the return of Calgary, Kuala Lumpur, Pittsburgh and Portland, as well as Virgin Atlantic potentially moving Antigua, Islamabad and Montego Bay back to Gatwick. If weekend press reports are to be believed, the potential for the ‘use it or lose it’ slot rules to return for Summer 2022 is worrying Virgin Atlantic because it simply does not have enough Heathrow slots if demand returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Nothing wrong with ORD to CVG ….. just annoying – good for the tier points and a visit to R J Grunts in ORD though 😉

Dont know if they still do, but BAA used to have the management contract for IND ….

i’ve had a lot of regional jet delays and diversions due to summer thunderstorms. Ended up in Columbus and Dayton… prefer not to risk the layover with young children.

As an Indy-born American in London who flew LHR-ORD-IND just 2 weeks ago, this is very welcome news!

I guess spring starts and ends early in Rob’s household 🤔 🙂

    • Andrew says:

Well, some Scottish schools have rebranded the “Easter” break as “Spring”. Which makes sense as it’s been fixed by their local authority as the first two weeks in April rather than moving around the calendar.

Slot allocations aren’t tied to ‘proposed’ destinations…

Rolls-Royce has a major plant in Indianapolis which has just won the B52 engine programme. Expect a lot of staff shuffling from Derby and Berlin to Indy on BA rather than via United and many connections.

Corporate rates are the best deal, almost all of which were negotiated prior to Covid and the mass disposals of cars by the rental companies. A quick google search on company rates may yield results, I have a friend who used their Exxon Mobil corporate rate for years after he left the organisation.
I recently had five days Chevvy Impala, with National out of Detroit cut from $550 to $176 using my companies rate.
