We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I had great plans next week to park at Thistle T5 and hop in pods . This is now not an option sadly . How much bother is getting taxi/ uber to and from T5? Usually valet park but electric wheels now complicate matters .
    Thanks

    • Tom says:

First time I’ve ever seen the word ‘great’ used in the same sentence as ‘Thistle T5’. No need for an Uber or a taxi. They are laying on a (mono)rail replacement bus…

      • Marie says:

I agree Hotel dingy but the pods are fun. I wanted to avoid a bus if possible

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Rooms are actually not awful at all in fairness. Food good for the class of hotel and love the rooftop bar area. Really like that place

    • Red Flyer says:

Any idea how long pods are out of action for as I had same plans for a 2 Jan departure?

    • MrHandBaggageOnly says:

Just back from parking at the Thistle. Took the 423 to T5 (they run every twenty mins) and was fine to the airport, on the way back though the buses are still on diversion so you can’t get off very close to the hotel, better to get an Uber/taxi if you can.

  • Boi says:

Any recommendations on hotel in Miami? Children on tow.

Any Black Friday deals or should I wait?

  • Boi says:

Also any recommendations for hotel in New York for a stay involving NYE?

Similarly hoping to catch a Black Friday deal or a high value redemption

    • ChrisC says:

      Depends on your budget.

But very unlikely to be any bargains for NYE in Manhatten.

Redemptions would have been nabbed up ages ago.

      • Aston100 says:

Indeed. The room type I booked earlier this year (for Christmas week) is now more than double.

        • Boi says:

Thanks. But which hotels are good?

          • Blenz101 says:

If you want a chain then the Ritz-Carlton is lovey and has lounge access with club rooms. Conrad is also lovey but doesn’t have a lounge, still one of my favourites though.

Plenty of boutique 5* hotels in the city but you would need to give more of a steer on what it is you are looking for including your budget.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

As you haven’t specified anything much…

Look at Library Group hotels, especially the eponymous flagship.

          • Boi says:

ihg, marriott or hilton. anything up to 600/night

  • Tracey says:

Niche questions. Looking to go to Mauritius for a week in December. No reward flights available. Any airline recommendations for a direct flight.
For hotels, was looking at Trou Aux Biches where we’ve stayed before, but also like the look of Maradiva villas, that looks just as good but half the price. Anyone been there?

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Scoot now offering London to Bangkok and Singapore. Promo fares look good

    • Sam G says:

They charge for absolutely everything including the power socket. No entertainment onboard. The ScootPlus section might not be bad (have done to/from Berlin & Athens a couple of times) since that includes a lot of the whistles but I’d be surprised if the econ seats work out worth doing unless you really can manage without luggage etc!

  • Tw33ty says:

Anna- seen your post about maybe going to Glasgow in the future.

I’m Currently in cp Glasgow on a points night.
Upgraded to corner suite with lounge access, quite nice.
Night time views over the city are also nice. Very friendly staff.
Nice walks along the waterfront and close to the centre.

  • AMU says:

Does anyone know if the 1:1 HSBC to Avios offer will be back? Was it usually around Christmas time that it was offered in the past?

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Hope Curve pay some royalty to Rob, as it’s now running a marketing campaign capitalising on amazon visa situation.

    • Blenz101 says:

Not a great campaign to emailing existing users and a bit of in-app advertising. Can’t see that reaching many of Amazon’s millions of UK customers.

Presumably the trade off is the customer misses out of S75 protection and Curve makes a loss on the high interchange fee Amazon are unhappy with.

      • TGLoyalty says:

If the issue is cross border transaction fees like we think then Curves not being charged that because the Visa card Amazon wouldn’t accept directly is U.K. issued and the merchant (curve) is U.K. based.

        • Blenz101 says:

Yes but don’t Amazon UK remain Luxembourg based and still need paying cross border. Perhaps not an issue as you say as they issue Mastercards.

          • Peter K says:

So surely Curve is only charged the lower interchange rate (intra-uk) but can charge a higher one themselves (outside of UK and online) so can pocket the difference?

          • Blenz101 says:

Charge who? I thought their payments were processed by checkout.com rather than directly.
