The HfP chat thread – Sunday 21st November

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

hi, can anyone give me referral code for enterprise, there’s a car at the end of my road!’

    • Yorkie Aid says:

There’s no code you have to add a first and last name. Then £20 credit each following your first rental. Rob might appreciate it as your sub 🙂

Does anyone have experience of dropping bags with BA at LHR T5 many hours earlier than departure?

Flying to Dubai at 20:00 on Christmas Day, however for boring logistical reasons it would be super helpful to us to swing by check in at around 10:00 and loose the luggage.

The BA website states this is possible for J, F and OW sapphire/emerald. So, this isn’t a question about whether it can technically be done; more a request for reassurance that the check in agent will actually accept the bags / won’t loose the bags!

    Appreciate any prior experience…

    • Tom says:

‘Lose’ – sorry. Not loose. Can’t edit!

    • Blenz101 says:

If you are eligible of course you can. Once your bags are dropped you are not forced to go airside. The groups eligible relish in doing just that and spending hours eating canteen food and cheap booze in the lounge. The baggage system at T5 is perfectly capable of storing and recalling bags at the right time, no different really to a long layover.

You could even consider twilight check in the day before if that helps you further.

      • ChrisC says:

        Not for a 20.00 departure

Twilight check in is available for flights departing up until 13.00.

      • Lady London says:

Pretty sure flights only open for checkin on same day only a few hours before. I am pretty sure I”ve been caught on this one.

        • Blenz101 says:

In economy 3 hours before, but for J and F and those with OW status you can check in at anytime same day. Limited bag storage behind the scenes / terminal capacity to allow those in economy to do the same.

It’s one reason you read so many stories online of people with a 6pm departure in CW/F turning up at 9am to maximise their lounge time.

          Lady London,
Tnx for advice on other page, no reply option for you… So yes, will be calling insurers today. I do have the WhatsApp MOH transcript from yesterday saying l need to go to a facility, so will let them know all that. Apparently on release! We get a full report for insurers, but it would be nice to see my result anyway. Feel in a dream here, sensed this might happen, but you know, the fit to fly was neg so we chanced it. Said just now they may let me see the report later.

    • Sam G says:

Any time from 5am. The storage is all automatic so they’ll be fine !

      • Tom says:

Blenz / Chris / Sam, thank you all. No canteen food here. Off to the parents for a Christmas lunch only mum can cook. Appreciate the reassurance that swinging by Heathrow when passing on the M25 won’t be a wasted detour.

  • Max says:

Hello, has anyone redeemed virgin points for domestic US travel on delta? The virgin website claims they don’t fly the route when searching for domestic us flights. How do I redeem virgin points on delta then. I’m looking for west coast to Hawaii. Thanks one and all

    • Rob says:

Check the route IS actually flown by Delta and then see what Delta itself is offering for reward seats. If you can see flights at the lowest rate then the Virgin call centre should be able to book. (Perhaps try the Flying Blue website or another SkyTeam partner so you are seeing seats open to partners.) Note that Hawaii availability is tricky.

  • ianM says:

Quick question on Hilton reward bookings – I know they count for status, but do they count towards bonus points, ie 10 nights for 10,000 bonus points?
