UK reintroduces compulsory PCR tests for arrivals – must isolate until results arrive

Boris Johnson has announced new measures for anyone returning to the UK from a trip to any destination.

Everyone arriving in the UK will need to take a PCR test within two days of their return.

It is not clear when this will come into effect, as it presumably requires the publication of a Statutory Instrument which will appear here. Monday is probably the best bet. Whilst technically the announcement only applied to England, Scotland and Wales have already confirmed that they will follow suit.

EDIT: As this later article explains, it comes into effect at 4am on Tuesday.

Coronavirus

In a major change from how the policy worked during the Summer, it will be compulsory to self-isolate until the result is known.

There will also be a return to mask wearing in shops and on public transport, although not in hospitality venues. This is effective from next week.

Anyone who has been in contact with anyone diagnosed with the new Omicron covid variant will have to self-isolate for 10 days irrespective of their vaccination status.

These rules will be introduced for a temporary period of three weeks and will be reviewed at that point.

In a separate announcement earlier on Saturday, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia were added to the ‘Red List’ of countries which will require hotel quarantine for anyone who has visited them within 10 days of returning to the UK. South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini were placed on the list on Friday.

We will update this article as more details emerge. The official Government press release is here.

Someone I know is in the air right now, due to land at LHR in a few hours. Can they get through passport control ok with just the lateral flow booked and arrange the PCR when they get home? Hope so…

  • Hilda M says:

Wasn’t there a leaked report that 10,000 contact tracers had been told last week that their jobs were being axed as “the money had run out”. How on earth are they going to enforce people isolating till PCR result ? Asking for a “friend” who arrives next Friday & had just booked a haircut for Saturday:)

    • Harry T says:

They’ve never widely enforced isolation in any context to a serious degree.

      • Polly says:

Harry, we had friends called in London every day, checking their location on the mobiles…

    • Margaret says:

I had someone knock on my door st 10.30am the day after I’d returned from Spain and only single vaxxed at that time. He asked to see my passport to verify me. I also has 2 phone calls.

  • Mark says:

Does anyone have precise info on PCR ruling – is it effective immediately? Literally in the airport (arriving LHR tomorrow) with antigen test already at home via Randox.

    • Lee Thornton says:

It can’t possibly be. We still live in a democracy and laws cannot be passed simply by annoucement. Keep your eye on https://www.legislation.gov.uk/new/uksi for details, there will need to be a new statuatory instrument to legalise any changes. There is none as yet.

  • Tracey says:

Are these PCR tests by the end of day 2 or on day 2?

Assuming my holiday goes ahead, I arrive back 5am Saturday morning. Work planned for Sunday and Monday. Ideally I need results by Sunday morning or if not Monday morning. If I can’t take the test until day 2, this would be a problem.

  • SammyJ says:

Any official confirmation of when the Day 2/isolation starts? My mate is in the check-in queue in TFS now surrounded by 200 fellow angry passengers!
Someone on telly said 4am tomorrow but can’t see that in print anywhere?

  • Richie says:

Will the UK PLF form be updated in time?

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Blow me down, Covid news that hasn’t been leaked in a news paper 24 hours in advance!

  • Mike says:

Does this invalidate any existing PLF without a PCR then?

    • NvT1115 says:

I hope not… There must be some leeway as long as evidence of booked day 2 pcr test
