We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Miles and More update:
“We are happy to further extend your mileage protection until 30 June 2022
After this date, however, your award miles will start to expire in accordance with the Miles & More “

  • Anna says:

Parking charges at hotels – we should really start a “name and shame” of the worst offenders. Looking for a night near Coventry in March and the Doubletree Coventry looked a very reasonable £65 for a Saturday night, except that parking is an extra £15! I realise that some hotels charge a lot more than this but this place doesn’t exactly look anything special …

    • Tony1 says:

Here are two for your list

      McGallery Windsor £24
Mercure Brighton £20 ( sign in car park said £15 )

      • Tony1 says:

Oh and the Novotel in Andorra €24 – public car park outside hotel €15

      • Anna says:

Yes, it’s one thing charging a fair whack to park at a high end city hotel where you’re going to be fleeced anyway, but who’s going to be looking for a cheap room but with ridiculously-priced parking in the midlands!

        • Anna says:

Though we got 3 days parking at the NCP near the Kimpton Fitzroy for £42 back in May, so central London was actually cheaper than the Doubletree Coventry!

    • the_real_a says:

Im in the habit of searching on “free parking” to shortlist hotels around a postcode. Then make a booking on whatever site is most beneficial. On occasion i also email the hotel to waive the parking charge because its not a “reimbursable expense” – lots of hotels oblige if i book direct over the phone.

    • Tom says:

Anna, its worth checking with the hotel directly in case they allow gold / diamond to park for free. I had parking charges waived at a Doubletree just outside Nottingham and the Hampton (I think it’s a Hampton) at Liverpool airport.

      • Anna says:

        I think I will!

        • The cyclist says:

I always use my elderly aunts blue badge, its a real boon, usually parking is free or a lot cheaper or worst case you can even park on double yellows.

          • Anna says:

Why do you even need parking, cyclist? Though I thought you were going by Anastasia at the moment …

          • The cyclist says:

@anna, my bikes got square wheels and no saddle, that why I use my aunts car.

          • Jody says:

I really hope you have your Aunt with you, and aren’t just abusing the blue badge. Hard enough to find blue badge parking without people using them when they’re not supposed to.

          • The cyclist says:

I have been given a stern talking to by a traffic Warden once, but its an occupational hazard I guess. I would have taken my aunt but she is unfortunately no longer with us, there’s still nearly two years validity on it so happy days.

          • Jerry says:

In the London Borough I live in they always prosecute for this abuse and the fines are eye-watering. A trainee solicitor also got barred.

          • Bazza says:

Absolutely Typical cyclist. Thinks the law don’t apply to it, while blaming others…

      • John says:

The doubletree Nottingham doesn’t charge for parking at all

There is lots of free parking just outside the airport at Liverpool… Just don’t park right outside someone’s house

      • Gavin says:

I’m hoping this Diamond will be waived parking charges at Doubletree Bristol central next week. Needed a room in that bit of Bristol and every hotel seems to charge.

    • William PH says:

Hotel Indigo Cardiff £30 a night in the scuzzy NCP next door. When we made a fuss the Indigo managed to endorse the ticket so it was reduced by 25%, but this wasn’t offered as standard.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

The Fellows House Cambridge £30 per day.
      Nice hotel though.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Captive audience as there is literally no other parking nearby. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly the safest car park either.

    • Can says:

Have you tried mentioning your Gold/Diamond status, if you’ve got one

    • Travel Strong says:

Another vote for Hilton here. Hilton Gold. I never ask, just hope – and 9 out of 10 times my parking charges are waived and never appear on my bill.

But the worst has to be Hilton Bournemouth. Not only did they charge an extortionate amount, I also did not see the narrow concrete kerbs running between the in/out lanes and severely damaged an expensive alloy wheel.

      • Tariq says:

Parking spaces are very small in that car park too!

      • TGLoyalty says:

Brighton were no better but did allow me to keep the car in there as long as I wanted after checkout.

      • Neil Spellings says:

There is an NCP just over the road (5 mins walk) from the Hilton Bournemouth which is half the price and has much more space

    • Tariq says:

It’s not. Consider the Marriott Forest of Arden, if that is close enough for you.

    • Pid says:

They did not charge us when we stayed At DT Coventry. Not sure if this is because we weee gold or just did not charge residents.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Coombe Abbey isn’t too far from the DT and is special in its own way

The Telegraph Hotel in the city centre is pretty nice. Parking might still be £15 but atleast you can enjoy the area around Coventry cathedral (Bayley Lane, cathedral lanes etc) and/or spon street 🙂

European city of culture for a few more months yet.

Other options there’s a premier inn on Butts Rd with lots of outdoor parking. The Ramada nearby also has a multi storey car park but it’s very tight. Again a sort Uber into town.

Unfortunately nothing on points in the centre afaik. An Indigo is being close to the train station so maybe the start of something.

DataPoint. Removed all Amex/MC from Amazon account Saturday. No purchases. £20 Voucher appeared today. Voucher to be used before 27/12/21, not valid for most digital purchases. Didn’t activate while trying to purchase an adobe photography plan but did activate when trying to purchase an XD card.

    • Jody says:

I also removed on Saturday and put my visa credit card on. Did make a purchase with visa card. Still no voucher for me.

    • Amy C says:

      Where does it appear exactly?

      • Shaw West says:

IT appeared to me on the right side of the page just below the main Black Friday banner. It reads “Get £20 off
Add and use a debit card, Mastercard or Amex.
        Terms applyTerms apply”

    • Peter says:

It’s quite hidden, just found the tiny message offering £20 promotional credit – and I have £500 credit from Monese! Thanks

  • Shaw West says:

Hit 100 nights at Marriott. App says $13274 to achieve ambassador. 😛

  • Shaw West says:

Used to fly MAN-DUB few years before. Ryanair return for 1.98. But from Dublin airport to City centre used to cost €10.

  • Shaw West says:

Anybody got a Huawei 34″ MateView GT Monitor Sound Edition monitor? Price looks a steal for a 4K 165Hz monitor on BF deal.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Just orders it via curry’s eBay store and via Quid. There’s a additional 10% code. I had orders a 35” screen from laptops direct but now delayed 3 weeks so will cancel that order of this is good.

  • Mick S says:

Datapoint – Amex MR transferred to BA Exec Club on Saturday have appeared this afternoon.
