Virgin Atlantic confirms launch of Austin flights

On Saturday we wrote that rumours were swirling of a new Virgin Atlantic route to Austin, Texas.

It turns out the rumours were true and flights are now being loaded into the booking system. Services are currently visible when you search via Google Flights but are NOT – as of Monday evening -appearing when you search via the Virgin Atlantic website.

The flights are as follows, with the route launching on 25th May:

  • VS231 departs Heathrow at 11:35 and arrives in Austin at 16:05
  • VS232 departs Austin at 18:05 and arrives in London at 9:00 the following day

The total flight time is 10:30 hours on the outbound and 8:55 on the return, which should give you enough time for a decent amount of sleep on the way back.

Flights will operate four times weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. They will use a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which still has the older Upper Class seat rather than the new suite on the A350s.

Virgin Atlantic is going head to head with British Airways on the route, which operates a daily flight with its A350 (and Club Suite) over the Summer.

Flights officially go on sale on the 12th. We are told the headline promotional fares will be £409 in Economy and £1,711 in Upper Class.

I’ve been checking out a trip to Austin in March with a little stop in San Antonio which looks interesting, just weighing up this or Arizona? Decisions, decisions.

    • tony says:

Just beware of Austin when SXSW is on, which is March. Eye-popping hotel prices….

      • Barnaby100 says:

Austin prices are astronomical at the moment. Not just in March. Our usual hotel has doubled since before lockdown

        • Alex Sm says:

Good option to use IHG points on stays. Israel and US are the two markets where it makes sense

    • James says:

Austin is cool. I’d say San Antonio is ok. Lots to do in Texas!

    • John Caribbean says:

The main sight in San Antonio is the Alamo, and it’s pretty underwhelming

      • Barnaby100 says:

River walk ,Pearl, the art gallery, more US military than you will have ever seen. And the food is amazing

        It is a fab place

      • dougzz99 says:

That would be a reconstructed Alamo, has less history than the car rental company.

    • HBommie says:

Thanks for the info, I did think that the hotel prices were high which ties in with spring break also. Florida is stratospheric.

      • tony says:

Do make sure you check the consolidators for hotel prices. Trivago returned some far more reasonable suggestions for Florida than the hotels were offering themselves…

  • NorthernLass says:

San Antonio is a beautiful city – in fact that whole area of Texas is a fascinating place to visit.

    • Oh! Matron! says:

Seconded…. The walk along the canal in the evening is simply lovely. And, of course, there’s always The Alamo….

    • The cyclist says:

Are there any Punic ruins to visit?

      • NorthernLass says:

I’d be very surprised if there were, cyclist. You mainly have to make do with a spoon which may be similar to one which may have been used by Davy Crockett.

  • Will says:

Anyone get 2000 avios offer on Supp card?

  • Liz says:

I just spent £1500 on Avis car hire last week!

    • Mike says:

£1,500 What did you do – buy one ?

    • Andrew says:

      What’s the context though?

Between December 2020 and April 2021 I spent £330 per month on the long term hire of a brand new Ford Focus from Thrity. (Plus £200 insurance from LV for the full period). So marginally more in total than your £1,500

Which of us got a better deal?

      • tony says:

Well Liz, because she wants a car in the US for her holidays, not something to park in the airport car park in the UK. Also to put your deal into the context of the new normal, Thrifty is now quoting £610 – plus another £120 in VAT – per month for long term rental of an Astra.

        • flyforfun says:

I was looking at 18 days in Brisbane for later this year on the Avis App. Quoted me £1500 when I just used the airport pick up.

Changed it to a CBD pick up and it went to £290!! I was getting that price for the 2nd tier off airport hire co’s.

          • Liz says:

Mine is a downtown pick in Seattle – will keep an eye on the prices over the next few months

  • Dj says:

Not on my BA Premium Plus 😞

  • manilabay says:

Maybe a TP Run on Virgin could Involve KLM UK-AMS-Milan, SIA Milan-BCN, AF BCN-CDG-UK? Just a thought

    • Dubious says:

      How about upping that to:
      KL UK-AMS-Milan,
      SQ Milan-BCN,
      AF BCN-CDG-FCO,
      SQ FCO-CPH,
      AF/KL CPH-AMS-UK?

  • Pid says:

    Not on my BAPP!

  • Alan T says:

Got a BAH balance to pay soon, so will split it across the two cards with the Avios offer and see?
