Virgin Atlantic confirms launch of Austin flights

On Saturday we wrote that rumours were swirling of a new Virgin Atlantic route to Austin, Texas.

It turns out the rumours were true and flights are now being loaded into the booking system. Services are currently visible when you search via Google Flights but are NOT – as of Monday evening -appearing when you search via the Virgin Atlantic website.

The flights are as follows, with the route launching on 25th May:

  • VS231 departs Heathrow at 11:35 and arrives in Austin at 16:05
  • VS232 departs Austin at 18:05 and arrives in London at 9:00 the following day

The total flight time is 10:30 hours on the outbound and 8:55 on the return, which should give you enough time for a decent amount of sleep on the way back.

Flights will operate four times weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. They will use a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which still has the older Upper Class seat rather than the new suite on the A350s.

Virgin Atlantic is going head to head with British Airways on the route, which operates a daily flight with its A350 (and Club Suite) over the Summer.

Flights officially go on sale on the 12th. We are told the headline promotional fares will be £409 in Economy and £1,711 in Upper Class.

    BTW Emirates fly DXB-BCN-MEX.

  • Mikeact says:

So who will win the battle from Austin to London and/or Europe ?
Virgin with Delta or KL/AF into LHR,AMS or CDG
BA into LHR and onwards ?
Or maybe vice versa could swing it ?

  • George K says:

I’m thinking of going down the SQ Infinite Journeys route this year, and my plan is to start the match into Krisflyer Silver (via Shangrila Jade) and then do three flights on the Milan to Barcelona route to get Gold, as opposed to run all the way to Asia.

    Any problems with this logic?

    • mutley says:

Sounds good, though for almost the same cost you could do the CPH to FCO run, and get 2 hours 20 each way in Biz as opposed to 1 hour 20 MIL to BCN. ( Check out the 7 day costs on the Singapore website)

      • George K says:

Yup, also an option, although flight times may not be much of interest as I may attempt to do this on the cheap and go for economy fares. It seems all booking classes qualify except G, but will decide closer to the time!

    • Will says:

Am I thinking it gets top tier krisflyer by doing this?

How long is it valid for once qualified?

      • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

One year, but it should allow you to status match in that year and their years may not run in parallel

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

I am thinking of doing same. You need 3 SQ flights so I was going to do MXP-BCN return then train to Rome, then SQ’s FCO-CPH route.
