Good Australia business class fares with Singapore Airlines

As you have no doubt seen in the mainstream media, Australia will reopen for tourism later this month.

I wrote this article recently on how to use Avios to get to Australia. However, I also said in that article that cash is often a better way given how good the deals can be.

Here is an example. Singapore Airlines is currently offering great pricing from Paris to both Melbourne and Sydney. There are also good deals to other spots in Asia.

Typical business class fares are (as you can see on the French website here):

  • Phuket €1,485 (£1,254)
  • Bangkok €1,504 (£1,270)
  • Male €1,832 (£1,547)
  • Denpasar / Bali €1,983 (£1,675)
  • Melbourne €2,204 (£1,862)
  • Sydney €2,446 (£2,066)

The fare rules are:

  • Travel by 30th November (no travel 8th July to 8th August)
  • Stay at least 7 nights
  • Book by 14th February

What is useful is that the calendar during the booking process shows you which dates have the cheapest fare available. For example:

18th March is the first day with availabilty to Melbourne for €2,204, for example, and there are no dates in April. It gets easier after that.

Singapore Airlines is NOT a member of the oneworld alliance, so you can’t earn Avios or British Airways tier points. You can credit Singapore Airlines flights to Virgin Flying Club.

If you don’t want to earn Virgin Points, the mileage earned would need to go into Singapore’s own KrisFlyer scheme or potentially Lufthansa Miles & More. KrisFlyer is not a bad choice as you can top up your balance using American Express Membership Rewards points at the rate of 3:2.

The only downside with KrisFlyer is the hard three year expiry date. You must use the miles within three years or you lose them, irrespective of your status or whatever other miles you earn in the meantime. Miles & More is no better, of course.

We’ve never done a proper Singapore Airlines business class review on the site. Here is a quick look at the 777-300ER seat from 2015. Sinead is working on a Premium Economy review from her Christmas trip which should run in a week or so.

The sale website from Paris is here.

United Airlines points don’t expire if you’re looking for somewhere to credit these

For anyone looking to book Oz flights – my Plat amex is today showing an offer from Qantas: Spend £800+ get £120 back

  • Chris G says:

As someone who sells turntables for a living, I’d like to warn anyone that playing vinyl on a Crossley will damage it and destroy it long term. They only cost about the same as 4 new LPs to buy!

    • Anuj says:

Do you have any suggestions for a turntable around £350? I was thinking pro-ject perhaps

    • Travel Strong says:

I went with direct drive reloop turntables (Good reputation Technics 1210 replica’s)

    • Lady London says:

      @Chris G thank you.

What sort of turntable/needle should I be playing very old records on? I think some may be shellac? or something similar

      • Chris says:

If you’re playing 78rpm shellac it’s a tricky one. Nothing currently made (at a sensible price) will work properly. I’d suggest getting a classic gramophone. Just make sure you don’t re-use needles – will kill your shellac if you do…

I thought the same looking at that nasty cartridge !

  • BlueThroughCrimp says:

Did the Barra beach landing excursion yesterday.
Unforgettable, particularly in 40 knot winds on the island!
A plane to ourselves with just my dad and me on the return leg.

Hat tip to the person who posted the offer before Christmas.

    • Rob says:

Glad you enjoyed it, definitively worth doing it once.

    • Alan Todd says:

Great! I’m heading next week. Did you make it to Castlebay or just hang out at the airport?

      • BlueThroughCrimp says:

Return flight was delayed by nearly 2 hours, (be prepared!) so instead of just going over the dune to the other beach, at the suggestion of the wonderful Barra check-in agent, we took a wee taxi tour for a couple of hours.
Dan gave a great tour round the island (down the west to Castlebay, and back the up the east to the airport), with loads of local snippets of information, stopping off at a few places to point out things, like where the SS Politician was wrecked, and Compton MacKenzie’s resting place, all at a fair price of £60 for the two hour tour.

The cafe at the airport is closed just now, there’s just a vending machine for snacks.

It’s quite a surreal experience having been through the busiest airports, to fly from Barra where the pilot was seeing her mum before the return to Glasgow!

Hope you enjoy it as much as me and my dad did, but get a bit more visibility!

  • Thywillbedone says:

Speaking of long haul flight deals: has anyone ever had success adding a third person (specifically a child) on to ongoing SWISS/Lufthansa travel partner deals …there are some very good offers available but they only seem to cater to two adults travelling? Would it not be better to sell three tickets together than two?

    • tony says:

I seem to recall the trick was to book the child as an adult. You may lose out on a £50 or so discount as the base fare is so low, but it’s better than the alternative.

  • Lady London says:

D*** for the first time ever I regret moving my other 10,000 Virgin points to Hilton.

I will be very interested to see Sinead’s review on PY on SQ.

    • Andrew J says:

Do you mean Premium Economy? The code for that is W.

      • Lady London says:

Not just, IIRC there are 4 booking classes in PY? Some call it Y+ too.

I’m looking forward to Sinead’s review as I believe SQ may be one of the few airlines where PY is closer to J than Y?

        • Andrew J says:

There are several booking classes for Y and J too – but the shorthand is to use the full fare code for each which is J for business, Y for economy (as you have done) and W is for premium economy.

  • Mal says:

Their site shows there are still 6 days to run for this promotion, but the cheapest CDG-MEL are now pricing out at over 3700euros for me, either directly with SIA or through Google flights. Anyone else seeing this?
I tried booking the 2205 fare yesterday but they refused to accept my card for some bizarre reason. Yesterday almost everything at the end of the year was pretty much 2205, just 12 hours later and it’s that 3657 price. 3 different PCs, 3 different browsers, various combinations of cookie settings/blocking or secure browsing modes now all give the same.
Some kind of temporary “glitch” or have i missed the boat?

  • Louie says:

I’m still seeing a fair bit of €2,205 availability but a lot of it requires a 17 odd hour stopover in Singapore on SQ’s website, which automatically lists flights in shortest duration time, so you have to reorder in price order or scroll down to see them.

Also, should anyone be interested, open jaw into MEL and back from SYD isn’t that much more.
