Manchester Airport pulls Terminal 3 re-opening at the last minute

Manchester Airport was due to re-open Terminal 3 on Sunday. This is the first day of the Summer flying season and was meant to add capacity ahead of the busy Easter period.

The airport has found some technical issues with the terminal, it seems, which cannot be fixed quickly. This may be a polite way of admitting that the airport is struggling to recruit staff to replace those let go during the pandemic.

This means that there will be NO check-in available at Terminal 3 from Sunday. All passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 need to check-in and clear security at Terminal 1, which is a mess at the best of times. This situation will continue until the end of April, apparently.

British Airways, Iberia Express, Ryanair and Vueling passengers:

Your aircraft will still depart from a gate in Terminal 3. After clearing Terminal 1 security, you need to follow the internal signage to Terminal 3. A small number of shops and restaurants in Terminal 3 will still be open.

Your flight will arrive in Terminal 3 as planned.

Aurigny, Eastern Airways and Loganair passengers:

These flights have been moved to Terminal 1 departure gates, so you should remain in Terminal 1 after clearing security. (I imagine that these flights are bussed, because they use smaller aircraft, so it doesn’t really matter where passengers get on the bus.)

Your return flight will land in Terminal 3 as planned.

Hope that’s clear ….

Unsurprisingly – to anyone who uses Manchester Airport – Rhys’s attempt to review the new Aspire lounge in Manchester Terminal 2 yesterday failed because it was full. This is an underused terminal on a Wednesday during the school term. He was perfectly happy because he had access to the premium 1903 Lounge anyway, but it means our review will need to wait for another day. He was allowed to peer through the door and said it looked decent …..

I miss the LBA link to Heathrow as it meant I rarely had to set foot in Manchester. I really wish BA would reinstate that or just add one at any other northern airport.

    • yorkieflyer says:

I too wish LBA and LPL or EMA had more flights, we have two more ex MAN rebooked on EZY both at 0700 then we’re done. It was crap pre Covid now just appalling

    • Rob says:

Or, you know, take the Flybe flights from LBA to Heathrow.

      • StaggerLee says:

Yeah.. had thought of that it just adds expense when using a 241

      • yorkieflyer says:

No, I meant direct to Europe. Flying long haul I’d much rather drive or train it to LHR rather than faff about with domestic connections whether on one PNR or not

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Doing this you lose a key advantage of flying BA domestic. If your flight it from T5 you don’t need to pass through security when arriving on a domestic BA flight.

Unfortunately Flybe will be using T2 (the only other LHR terminal capable of handling domestics) so you could use Flybe from LBA to connect to Star Alliance without going through security but not BA

    Shangri-La / Golden Circle

Anyone remember the free 250 points offer from a few years ago?

Well I have 250 points (and Jade membership) and my partner has the same 250 points in her own separate account.

We would like to use them in the Shard…but suspect we won’t be able to as I think they are useless (whilst in separate accounts) and only useful if redeemed together; 500 points for a $50 dining/drinks voucher.

    Any possible solutions? Thanks

    • Thegasman says:

You can redeem as few points as you want in person. You just show the App or proof of membership & they’re converted to a cash discount. The value has or is about to drop significantly though so don’t hang around (Rob did an article about it recently if you search site). Not all the dining venues at The Shard are eligible either but you can certainly use for drinks in the bar with a decent view.

I’m interested in how you still have those points though, I thought all those earned through the Instagram thing had finally expired on 31/12/21 after a few Covid extensions.

      • k says:

Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t aware they can be used ad-hoc in small amounts. I hope to use them in a week or two before the devaluation – I’ve never been to the Shard so unsure which bar we’re be allowed to freely access? Do we have to book/pay to get in? Thereafter I imagine 250 points will get me a cola if not a beer!?

I don’t know how I still have them in fairness, it was a long time ago. I presume they were extended – I did have a stay in their (fabulous) hotel in Tokyo pre-Covid so maybe that helped.

        • Rach says:

It’s the ones on the Shangri La website rather than the Shard website as not all of the shard restaurants are part of the hotel. I’ve been to Ting twice using points and it’s fabulous!

  • Kevin Bickerstaffe@ says:

Manchester Airport was never great in the past few years, now it is worse than many 3rd World. I have now stopped using it and just cancelled 2 flights from it, I will fly from Heathrow or Glasgow instead. The CEO and Border Force Manager both need sacking.

    • Chris says:

Could not agree more with your suggestion. The layout and lack of organisation and management is truely appalling in Terminal 1. & Don’t get me started on the departure lounge

  • Doommonger says:

Alternative to MAN it’s LBA…. Marching on together, you know you want to.

    Doomster

  • AL says:

MAN continuing to be a joke. T2 has had £800bn in to it, but lounges are tiny and staffing is abysmal. Less stressful for me to fly to LHR then abroad, I find! Wish they’d sort MAN out once and for all.

    • qrfan says:

£800bn? That’s twice the GDP of Austria.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

What’s the odd £799,000,000,000 between friends?

      • AL says:

Three big time zone swings in seven days does strange things to you! Of course, I meant million.

Still, the point stands. An embarrassment of an airport.

  • davefl says:

According to my openflights record I’ve flown through 93 airports in my life, and over 120 times throught MAN. I think from that I’m pretty well qualified to class MAN as the worst airport on pretty much every metric.

    • Phil says:

Not defending MAN in the slightest, but if you’ve only flown through 92 airports once and MAN over 120 times then you can’t really classify MAN as the worst airport on pretty much every metric if you are comparing it to the other 92. MAN is bad. But there are worse. Many, many, many.

      • davefl says:

Well no. I’m comparing it to the 93 (I forgot HEL) that I’ve flown through.

Comparing it to airports I haven’t flown through would be silly right?

    • NorthernLass says:

I’ve been through MAN a lot more than 120 times, on average about 6 times per year for the past 30+ years. I should get some kind of trophy, or a free coffee at Burger King. Or counselling, possibly.

  • Sam says:

So a 6.50am ba flight sat april 2nd. Will have fast track. What would be recommended time to check in? Thanks

  • Casj says:

Retired now but still use Man Airport about six times a year . The service was pretty poor before covid but now is pathetic the Management and Border force should be ashamed of their performance. Sadly this poor value to the paying customer will not improve anytime soon and I can only advise any flyer to use any other available airport before Manchester Airport
