Oman Air to join the oneworld alliance with Avios ‘earn and burn’ on the way

Oman Air announced today that it is joining the oneworld airline alliance, alongside British Airways. We knew that the airline was interested in signing up but there was no sign that discussions were so advanced.

This means that, by 2024, you will be able to earn and redeem Avios on Oman Air flights between the UK and Muscat and connecting destinations onwards.

Qatar Airways, which already works closely with Oman Air, has agreed to act as sponsor for the application and provide support for the integration.

Oman Air to join the oneworld alliance

Adding Oman Air will give oneworld an even stronger position in the Middle East, flying alongside Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian.

It leaves Star Alliance and SkyTeam looking a little exposed, albeit that Star Alliance has EGYPTAIR and SkyTeam has Middle East Airlines and Saudia. Whilst Emirates is unlikely to ever join a major alliance, pressure may now increase on Etihad to partner with one of the other two groupings.

Oman Air adds three new destinations to the oneworld route map – Duqm and Khasab in Oman and Chittagong in Bangladesh.  The airline has lounges in Muscat, Salalah and Bangkok which will become available to British Airways Gold and Silver members who are flying on a oneworld airline.

Oman Air currently flies to 41 destinations in 20 territories, using a fleet of Boeing 737, Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 aircraft.

I reviewed Oman Air’s First Class Suite in this article and reviewed their Business Class seat in this article. We reviewed the Oman Air Business Class lounge in Muscat here. At Heathrow it uses the Gulf Air lounge in Terminal 4, although this will presumably switch to the Qatar Airways lounges in 2024.

Oman Air is a classy operation and a worthy addition to the alliance. The only downside is that British Airways is less likely to relaunch its own flights to Oman when Oman Air joins oneworld, in the same way that it no longer flies to Helsinki (home of Finnair) and Kuala Lumpur (home of Malaysia Airlines). You can at least rely on British Airways to open up 14 Avios seats per flight.

For reference, the current list of oneworld alliance members is Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines. Fiji Airlines is a ‘oneworld Connect’ partner members. The membership of Russian airline S7 is currently suspended.

Surely RJ get the boot soon?

  • BJ says:

BKK lounge (btw, acccess via PP) was a lovely peaceful haven. All change soon I guess.

  • Tony says:

Some interesting Oman Air J fares exist out of BHX to BKK and KUL if you can manage the midway layover and an add on with Lufthansa to either MUC or FRA at either end… c. £2k this summer which is well below market rate

    • Andrew J says:

      So the route is FRA-BHX-BKK?

      • Rich says:

        He surely means BHX-FRA-MCT-BKK?

        • tony says:

Yes, that was the reference to the stop half way down the line. Just given the prices for flights heading east this summer, it stands out.

    • YC says:

Agree this is good! It’s 2 stops but still clocks in under 20hrs total time. Direct on MH is £1.9k in July (economy). Never seen fares this high before. Even ex-UK it’s sky high. Airlines should be raking it in this summer

  • Ian says:

What is the earn and burn reference?

    • Richie says:

Earning points and redeeming points if you are an avios collector.

    • Andrew J says:

You’ll be able to earn Avios and spend Avios with Oman.

  • Nick says:

I’d say that on balance it’s more rather than less likely BA would reintroduce service to a newly formed oneworld hub, assuming there’s a decent volume of feed traffic from/to their flights. I don’t know enough about WY’s network and certainly don’t know of any current plans, but this is typically how BA thinks in terms of serving partner hubs. As an example, S7 entry into oneworld was principally because it supported high flows onto (and from) the 3 daily BA flights to DME, and GRU at 10pw was largely thanks to the LA/JJ hub (pre DL of course).

  • opcacioppo says:

Re 14 Avios seats. Can anyone tell me if BA are releasing Avios Seats, there are FOUR Business seats to Singapore and none back. Only one airport to Far East, someone should be answering for many 241 totally wasted. Slightly off point I know!

    • Rhys says:

Someone’s probably already booked them. BA always releases 4 Club seats per flight. As Singapore is now one of BA’s only flights to the Far East I imagine people are calling up at midnight to secure them.

      • Gordon says:

I am in Indonesia now via Singapore, We booked them around 10 months in advance via a 2-4-1 maybe we were lucky .

    • NorthernLass says:

As someone pointed out on another thread, now the 241 can be used to start outside the UK, people might be booking the SIN-LHR sectors first (then maybe not being able to get their inbound legs because they’re all being booked by pax based in the UK!)

  • Dominic says:

Excellent news – Oman Air is a brilliant airline, in my experience. Good addition to oneworld, and could even tempt me away from my usual usage of one of the UAE airlines for Asia flights..

  • Ayearinmx says:

Shame it’s not happening for awhile… I have to go to Oman in September
