British Airways moving flights from Terminal 3 into Terminal 5 as Iberia and American move out

British Airways is consolidating its Heathrow flights in Terminal 5, with a swathe of routes moving across from Terminal 3.

There is something a little odd about this. The changes are happening quickly – passengers will get just 14 days notice in some cases. It also makes little sense in terms of trying to manage queues and lounge capacity in Terminal 5.

British Airways flights moving from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5

Iberia is moving in the opposite direction. Its Heathrow flights are moving from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 from the same day. It is strongly rumoured that American Airlines will be doing the same.

This is what is happening with British Airways services:

Long haul:

ALL long haul flights in Heathrow Terminal 3 and moving to Heathrow Terminal 5.

This is effective from 12th July.

This includes routes such as:

  • Accra
  • Austin
  • Barbados
  • Orlando
  • Las Vegas
  • Phoenix
  • São Paulo / Buenos Aires

Short haul:

The following short haul routes are also due to move across to Terminal 5 on 12th July:

  • Algiers
  • Brindisi
  • Bologna
  • Budapest
  • Faro
  • Krakow
  • Ljubljana
  • Marseille
  • Nuremberg
  • Olbia
  • Prague
  • Pisa
  • Split
  • Toulouse
  • Valencia
  • Zagreb

I’m not sure how much is left in Terminal 3, to be honest, although some core routes such as Vienna are staying there. It isn’t clear if any of the routes currently being operated using Finnair aircraft and crew will move to Terminal 5, or if those are staying in Terminal 3.

If you were connecting from a Terminal 3 to Terminal 3 flight, you may need to rebook one of the legs. You will need at least two hours, realistically, to transfer between terminals and to ensure that your baggage makes it across.

    This is getting ridiculous now. People, including me, arrange for parking way in advance.

      You could stick to your parking and just transfer over from T3?

        Yes, but when you pay extra for the convenience of the short stay car park it’s a tad frustrating. No biggie though, it’s a simple enough transfer on the tube.

      Any decent parking operator allows a terminal change.

        They do but for the official long stay parking I got charged an extra £7 for swapping my parking from T5 to T3 when BA moved my flight (LAS) originally and now they’ve moved it back to T5 they want an extra £30.

    Some of the Split flights are operated by Finnair, and the list says they are moving.

    It’s all to do with ground ops, with Covid they don’t have a T5 and a T3 crew anymore they now all come from T5. So your first flight you turn around could be T5 then have to make your way over to T3 for the next loosing loads of time! Don’t forget the trip back to T5 to go home at the end of the day.

      This is exactly what happened on my flight out to Vienna last week, incoming crew arrived into T5, but then had to transfer to T3, part of the reason the flight was almost 1 hour late

    I fly on the 12th to Marseille and was really looking forward to the lounge crawl! Hopefully it gets delayed by 1 day! 🙁

    While annoying in one sense will certainly be happy news for anyone with a connection with BA as it becomes a lot simpler. Also from a baggage transfer point of view it should simplify things. Clearly with the large number of cancellations it allows BA to use the gates that are now free due to those and focus its ground staff at T5 rather than split between T3 & T5, so hopefully will have some advantages even if frustrating for those who have made car park / hotel arrangements.

    For many reasons, bringing the operation back to T5 makes much sense.
    Crew travel times (which for part of their max hours)
    Focusing of ground resources in T5
    Reduce the need for extra staffing numbers
    and most convincingly – Terminal 3 is an absolute cluster f**k right now in terms of baggage….
