British Airways moving flights from Terminal 3 into Terminal 5 as Iberia and American move out

British Airways is consolidating its Heathrow flights in Terminal 5, with a swathe of routes moving across from Terminal 3.

There is something a little odd about this. The changes are happening quickly – passengers will get just 14 days notice in some cases. It also makes little sense in terms of trying to manage queues and lounge capacity in Terminal 5.

Is British Airways desperately trying to stop its passengers running up huge bills by visiting the superior Cathay Pacific and Qantas lounges in Terminal 3?! Here’s our article on the best airport lounges in Heathrow Terminal 3.

British Airways flights moving from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5

Iberia is moving in the opposite direction. Its Heathrow flights are moving from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 from the same day. It is strongly rumoured that American Airlines will be doing the same.

This is what is happening with British Airways services:

Long haul:

ALL long haul flights in Heathrow Terminal 3 and moving to Heathrow Terminal 5.

This is effective from 12th July.

This includes routes such as:

  • Accra
  • Austin
  • Barbados
  • Orlando
  • Las Vegas
  • Phoenix
  • São Paulo / Buenos Aires

Short haul:

The following short haul routes are also due to move across to Terminal 5 on 12th July:

  • Algiers
  • Brindisi
  • Bologna
  • Budapest
  • Faro
  • Krakow
  • Ljubljana
  • Marseille
  • Nuremberg
  • Olbia
  • Prague
  • Pisa
  • Split
  • Toulouse
  • Valencia
  • Zagreb

I’m not sure how much is left in Terminal 3, to be honest, although some core routes such as Vienna are staying there. It isn’t clear if any of the routes currently being operated using Finnair aircraft and crew will move to Terminal 5, or if those are staying in Terminal 3.

If you were connecting from a Terminal 3 to Terminal 3 flight, you may need to rebook one of the legs. You will need at least two hours, realistically, to transfer between terminals and to ensure that your baggage makes it across.

I’m booked with BA to fly to Faro in July on Finnair metal. Just received an email confirming move from T3 to T5

  • Jay Z says:

I’ve just had an email from BA saying “We are writing to let you know that your upcoming flight from London Heathrow will now depart at London Heathrow Terminal 5, not Terminal 3. For more information, please visit Manage My Booking on ba.com.”

Re: a flight ‘to’ Charlotte, however I’m not flying there, I am flying back from there though….. I assume this is what they mean, as my outbound has always been T5
    P.s. return late July

  • Dan says:

Damn. I’m flying to MAD on 11/7 with IB. Would much prefer to have access to the Cathay/Quantas lounges beforehand!

  • Calz says:

Gutted, just booked long weekend in Prague with view of enjoying some Cathay/ Qantas lounge access beforehand. Boooo.

  • NeilP1234 says:

This is shocking. Fly to Marseille (07:10) in August, back from Lyon a week later. Car parking totally messed up. Was in terminal 2/3 long stay to avoid 5:00am queue at my normal Heathrow official meet and greet drop off. To change to terminal 5 long stay costs more than double what I have paid (now £190/wk) plus the hassle of getting from T3 to T5 long stay car park on return.

    So frustrated! 😤

    • Londonsteve says:

There is no shocking aspect to this news at all, it’s a standard change of terminal for some flights, happens across the world at all airports with multiple terminals. You can easily transfer between T3 and T5 for free using frequent trains or the tube. You must lead an easy life compared to the rest of us if this is so upsetting.

  • Richard says:

So I’ve got an Iberia flight to Madrid booked through BA for 13/07 from T5 which I now assume will be T3 and booked T5 hotel with parking. Presume now it will be taxi from hotel to T3 unless anyone can give me a better idea? Returning from Malaga with BA so that should be ok

    • ChrisC says:

Well that would depend which T5 hotel it is as there are several within T5 in their names!

      • Richard says:

It’s the Thistle Chris. Good deal for stay and park

    • Henry says:

Would that be the IB3167 you’re fluid on?

  • Dubious says:

Whilst probably unconnected to the decision and the late notice given, I do wonder how much benefit this will give should the strike by check-in staff goes ahead. Presumably it will help mitigate some disruption at T3 as well as that faced by IB, and mean less stretching of remaining (non-striking) staff for the remaining operation.

  • Gordon says:

The fast track barriers were a joke at T5 at 05:30 this morning and there were only 2 flights in luckily enough. I ended going through the standard immigration kiosks it was quicker. God knows what it will be like once T3 flights move over….
