News in brief:

Good meal offer for Marriott Bonvoy American Express cardholders

If you have the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card, an interesting dining offer should have appeared on your card under the ‘Offers’ tab, either online or in the app.

If you spend £100 at the restaurant or bar in any of 12 Marriott-run hotels in London, you will receive 7,500 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points. The bonus will be paid via your monthly American Express transfer of points.

You should also receive 6 points per £1 for your spending, as these restaurants are all within Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

The the list of venues is here. It seems quite specific – some places just have their bars listed, some just their restaurants – so be careful where you drink or dine. Remember to opt in via American Express first.

The offer ends on 4th September so you don’t have much time.

Discount buying hyatt points

Get a 30% discount buying World of Hyatt points

Hyatt is running another ‘buy points’ promotion, but this is better than most. To confuse people, this one offers a 30% DISCOUNT rather than a bonus. You can buy here.

A 30% discount is equivalent to a 43% bonus, to save you doing the maths. This makes it the best bonus we have seen for some time.

The downside is that the number of points you can buy if you take this route is restricted. The annual purchase cap is 55,000 points, but when Hyatt offers a 30%-40% bonus this is ON TOP of the cap. When it offers a discount, as it does here, you are restricted to 55,000 points.

At the top end, via this offer, you are paying $924 for 55,000 points. It works out at 1.3p per point which is a little over the value that we place on them. Our core article on what World of Hyatt points are worth is here.

It is clearly worth a look if you want to top up your account in advance of a redemption. It may also be worth buying all of the points you need at some hotels. Suite upgrades to cash bookings can also be great value.

One great benefit of World of Hyatt is ‘last room availability’. If a standard room is available for cash it must be made available for points. This can greatly increase the value you get.

The ‘buy points’ page is here. The offer runs to 30th September.

Get a 75% bonus buying IHG One Rewards points

Talking of buying points, IHG One Rewards has just launched a 75% bonus for buying points.

The link to buy is here.

We saw numerous offers of a 100% bonus over the last couple of years, so I wouldn’t buy speculatively at this price. If you are looking to make a cash booking at the moment, however, it is worth looking at whether buying points for a redemption stay is cheaper.

The 75% bonus runs until 10th September.

I have received a targeted email about the Marriott dining offer on my Bonvoy card, which explicitly states it will expire on 18/9/22. This is stated multiple times throughout the email, including in the small print terms and conditions. However, the offer in my Amex account says the expiry is 4/9/22. Not sure what to believe!

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Yes I spotted the same discrepancy. 04 Sept – I will not use. 18 Sept – I will use. So it matters. I expect the email would be honoured even if via a manual adjustment at Amex’s end.

      • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Also the link from the Amex app to the list of restaurants doesn’t open a PDF; instead the NYSE website opens (shrugs)

        • Rob says:

Yes, I noticed that three days ago. Impressive they haven’t fixed it 🙂

      • Harry T says:

I’m in exactly the same situation. I will not be in London before 4/9/22 but I will probably be staying at one of the hotels the weekend of 16-18/9/22. A targeted email is fairly persuasive, I agree.

        • Rob says:

I agree the timing is bad – I’m not even in the UK myself during the time it is running.

          • Tariq says:

Noticed this week that the end date of the offer in the Amex app has been extended.

  • YC says:

Are any of these restaurants any good? I’ve only heard of berners tavern from the list.

    • James says:

      Can certainly recommend Berners Tavern.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

I like the ambience of the Sheraton Grand. The bar is dog-friendly too and I quite like watching little dogs (less interested in their owners tbh)

    • Ian M says:

The JW Steakhouse is one of the best steak restaurants in London in my opinion

  • Palty says:

Bought sole hyatt points last night as I was looking to do a redemption at a hyatt property in the uk
Turns out that there’s no points avaliablety
According to this article how would 1 make a booking if last room is avaliable?
Do I need to call them up?

    • Rob says:

Last room availability on standard rooms, which are what are offered up for redemption. If you can see a standard room for cash (easiest way to see what that is, is to look at a cash booking for 6 months ahead and see what the cheapest room type it) and no points rooms are showing then, yes, call up.

  • Gordon says:

We usually buy Hyatt points in a promotion. Son and daughter buy also on their account and donate them to us once a month. It makes for a fantastic saving on a property stay in the Caribbean over Christmas and new year when prices are crazy….

    • Boi says:

      That sounds interesting 😂

      Which property is this?

I find traveling a bit more expensive in North America and points come in handy (we now live in Canada).

      • Gordon says:

Hyatt Ziva Family AI or Hyatt Zilara Adults only. Located in Cancun, Montego Bay,Dominion Republic.Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. I have seen Christmas and new year at £900 pn, With points you can achieve £300 to £350 pn. That’s a Bargain.

  • Nick says:

anybody know the reasons behind the mysterious ongoing closure of Radisson RED @ the O2? just curious

    • Gordon says:

That’s only just opened as well, I travel past there often. 🤔

      • Gordon says:

Actually its a 20 to 25 min walk to the O2 from there. There is also the Holiday inn express the same distance from the O2 if you were struggling to find somewhere.

  • Hbommie says:

Would Hyatt points purchase be accepted spend for an Amex Platinum bonus?

  • Nick says:

Is it worth buying the Hyatt points speculatively or only worth it if redemption planned etc?

    • Rob says:

Never buy speculatively – you never know what is around the corner.

    • Thywillbedone says:

Hyatt did devalue earlier this year so one would think the next devaluation is at least 18 months away …but as Rob says, you never know what is coming. The poor STG USD rate doesn’t help either …

  • tony says:

If it’s of any use, I redeemed points at the Hyatt Place on Bath Road the other week. 5k points against room rates in excess of £100 booked several weeks in advance. Other places of a similar ilk were no cheaper, either.

    • Gordon says:

Hyatt place Bath road is a nice property with good staff. And a great view of the runway from top floor room.
