RwandAir wants to join the oneworld airline alliance

The oneworld alliance is becoming an increasingly popular choice for airlines in the Middle East and Africa. The latest airline to show an interesting is RwandAir, hot on the heels of Oman Air’s announcement that it would join oneworld in 2024 and Royal Air Maroc signing up.

The tie-up looks more likely to happen than not. RwandAir already has a partnership with Qatar Airways, and Qatars’ CEO Akbar Al Baker is currently Chairman of the oneworld alliance.

Both Al Baker and RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo gave public statements at the 6th African Aviation Summit in Kigali this week, with Al Baker saying:

Rwandair to join oneworld alliance

“We will do everything within our ability to bring them to the standard to be ready to join as a full member or an associate member …. We saw this potential in the place that is right in the centre of Africa, and the relationship they have with the state of Qatar, I found that this is the right place. This is about confidence and relationship, economic interest for both countries with each and this is what we are going to do.”

Makolo said:

“Joining Oneworld will help us gradually improve our products and services and what we are offering to our passengers.”

And in a media statement:

“We are exploring the possibility of entering the oneworld alliance. This would be a perfect fit for RwandAir and help us forge closer ties with like-minded airline partners overseas.”

RwandAir is the only airline to operate direct flights from Heathrow to Kigali and uses a fleet of next-generation A330neo aircraft.

Although still a small airline with a limited route network, Rwanda’s location in Central Africa makes it a convenient spot to connect to other Central and Southern African cities.

If RwandAir is confirmed as a full oneworld member it would mean you could earn and redeem Avios on RwandAir flights, although this is nothing new.

You can already earn and redeem Avios on RwandAir – you don’t need to wait for possible oneworld membership. This is due to the existing partnership with Qatar Airways, which now uses Avios as its reward currency. You can learn more about using Avios on RwandAir in this article.

It remains to be seen whether it becomes a oneworld ‘connect’ member, which offers a more limited partnership, or a full member. ‘oneworld connect’ is the route Fiji Airways took when it joined the alliance.

Direct flights to Kigali? You mean via Brussels?

    • Chas says:

      Perhaps that’s why Rhys didn’t say non-stop flights…

      • david says:

So a direct flight between here and Singapore could in theory have 6 stops?

        • Chas says:

Yup, that’s my understanding. Historically the stops were needed primarily for re-fuelling, hence why they were direct but not non-stop.

      • Mud Island Mlungu says:

        Direct implies non stop.

        Indirect implies “via” somewhere.

Maybe it is my age, but the distinction has always been totally clear to me.
First time we went to Las Vegas, we were on a direct USAir flight from SFO to Columbus, OH. One stop between SFO and LAS, then around half a dozen more between LAS and Columbus. This would have been the mid 1990s.

    • Matt says:

A lot of connecting flights also have a surprise second stop in Entebbe!

    • Rand says:

Is it possible to book Heathrow to Brussels only on those flights btw?

  • BJ says:

Accor: a reader asked in the forum how long Kobo took to post. My latest posted yesterday and took 24 days. However, tracking is very hit and miss IME.

  • Lady London says:

Are we sure Accor would not ringfence the 1m points and refuse conversion to any other program. Not that it will concern many of us.

Very curious as to trade, economic or other links between Rwanda and Qatar. Hopefully Qatar is not thinking of involving Rwanda in ideas similar to those of Pritti Patel?

    • Callum says:

I don’t see why they would. They barely accept refugees at all – they have something like 200 in total – and the only recent move they’ve made in this area is to (theoretically) improve refugee rights.

  • ADS says:

    “uses a fleet of next-generation A330neo aircraft”

actually it looks like one 200 and one 300 … as well as 10 or 12 shorthaul aircraft

    • Rhys says:

You may be right. They were supposed to take some but looks like that changed and they may take some of Qatar’s cast-offs.

  • Aston100 says:

    Interesting fleet.
    Just 2 * long-haul aircraft

Are the 6 * 737 planes capable of a journey from Heathrow to Kigali?

When I try to register at Accor I just get an error message pop up
“We seem to be experiencing some technical difficulties. Please refresh the page and try again.”

    • RussellH says:

      +1, sort of.

Using Pale Moon, I just got into a loop saying please log in.

Switched to Firefox and after a lot of jiggling around by the server, I was registered.

    • Dan says:

I am still getting the exact same error on 5 different web browsers and my mobile !! This is insane !!

  • cwyfan says:

anybody know which accor hotels are included?

    • Rob says:

Click on T&C in the registration page. It is all hotels in the participating countries that participate in ALL (so an Ibis Budget that doesn’t earn points won’t count).
