Royal Brunei to reinstate flights to Dubai from London

Long term HfP readers will, I’m sure, remember this three paragraph story from July 2018 where we reported on Royal Brunei dropping its flight between London Heathrow and Dubai.

Royal Brunei had operated this route from 2004 under ‘fifth freedom’ rules. The aircraft stopped in Dubai before carrying on to Brunei and you could book each leg separately.

In 2018 the airline swapped to a direct Heathrow to Brunei flight, offering the first ever non-stop service between the two countries.

Royal Brunei retarts London Heathrow to Dubai flights

This clearly didn’t work as well as was hoped, because Royal Brunei is bringing back its Heathrow to Dubai service.

From 1st November, there will be an overnight service to Dubai (departs Heathrow 5pm, lands 4.15am) and an equally painful early morning flight back (leaves Dubai at 3am, lands at Heathrow at 7.20am).

The flight will operate three days per week on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.

This is clearly not going to become a hugely popular option. Royal Brunei is not part of any major airline alliance so there are no ‘earn and burn’ opportunities for frequent flyer miles. The flight times are not ideal. I believe that Royal Brunei is a ‘dry’ airline, so no alcohol will be available, but you can bring your own! The business class seating on the Boeing 787-8 is not world class, with a 2-2-2 formation and no private solo seats.

The real benefit here is competition, assuming that the airline chooses to act as a price setter and not a price taker.

Do you know if RFS that is available on economy flights from LHR to DXB on BA is also available on Qatar? Taxes are capped to £100 on BA economy.

  • Seb says:

I had an issue the other way around to the example in the article. I could book business/first DUB-MCT with Qatar but no available was shown on BA for the same, and it wasn’t a 2x deal either. Other dates were only showing the second leg in economy on BA.com as well. Qatar make it very easy though as you ‘transfer’ you’re points as part of the purchase so no need to worry about moving them over and the flights no longer being available!

Just to pitch in on another data point re the QR/BA availability puzzle. I could find availability for QR flights on the BA site but neither the AA or QR sites.

I flew Melbourne – Brunei – Dubai – Heathrow back in April 2015 with Royal Brunei on Dreamliners. It was the cheapest business class option at the time to get back to the UK from Australia. No alcohol, but an impressive selection of soft drinks from memory.

These new times and dates have come live but I cannot see availability in December. Are redemptions showing up yet?

  • Kavajo says:

Royal Brunei used to have some interesting routings, great if you wanted to see lots of different countries. I flew LHR, DXB, CAL, SIN, overland to BKK, BWN, DWN then BNE all on one cheap ticket. I left just after the Sep 11 attacks and flights were almost empty. I used to move to an empty row of four and lie across, so that was actually my first lie-flat seat!
